If you want to increase pure strength and want to improve your neuromuscular adaptation, you should squat heavy (about 85–100% of your Maximum rep) for 3–5 reps.  Lower rep ranges allow tension with less lactic acid building up. Lactic acid can interfere with the sites for contraction that create tension, which in turn would hamper growth. Since higher rep ranges build up more lactic acid, lower reps would seem ideal for strength and size For “normal people” (non-professional athletes) the best program is the 5x5 program done 3 times a week. You actually do squats 3 times a week (Mon, Wed and Fri). Why is this better than doing high reps specifically for squats? Because most people don’t train legs or only train legs once a week. When you do high-rep squats only once a week you will HURT YOURSELF 100% of the time, every time. Your legs will be sore for 3 days after your workout and you will hate doing legs. When you hate doing legs you don’t train legs properly. When you don’t train legs properly, and you run into someone who does, you will likely lose at almost any physical challenge against that person.
