A statue dedicated to the Fox and Monkey fable by Aesop. I can’t help but notice this story that’s been told for several millennia is still relevant to current events of this day and age: . At the great meeting of the Animals, who had gathered to elect a new ruler, the Monkey was asked to dance. This he did so well, with a thousand funny capers and grimaces, that the Animals were carried entirely off their feet with enthusiasm, and then and there, elected him their king. . The Fox did not vote for the Monkey and was much disgusted with the Animals for electing such an unworthy ruler. . One day he found a trap with a bit of meat in it. Hurrying to King Monkey, he told him he had found a rich treasure, which he had not touched because it belonged by right to his majesty the Monkey. . The greedy Monkey followed the Fox to the trap. As soon as he saw the meat he grasped eagerly and carelessly for it, only to find himself held fast in the trap. . Upon on his accusing the Fox of purposely leading him into the snare, the Fox replied, “O Monkey, you pretend to be our King, but with a mind such as yours, how are you going to be King over the Beasts?” . After that, another election was held with the animals. . Fables were told to teach great truths about humanity. Does this one ring a bell? 🇺🇸

What’s the most expensive item you would pass around in class? This is a struggle I always have but so far (knock on oak wood) I haven’t had anything broken or even attempted stolen by students. With some items reproductions are easy and cheap... This Confederate bill I picked up in Beaufort, South Carolina is real. It’s signed but beat up. It’s the only bill I could afford in the shop (at $30). Supposedly, the owner of an old house in town found it shoved in the wall when remodeling, possibly hidden before Union troops arrived. #civilwarhistory #beaufortsc #coincollecting #confederatestatesofamerica #theregorstheneighborhood #southcarolina #historyteacher #historylesson #socialstudiesteacher #highschoolteacher #antique #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram #teacherproblems

We just love our antique birthing stool that we have here at our office. Although it is no longer actively in use, I am sure it has countless stories that could be told.✨⚡️🌟 Women have used birthing stools for centuries to help during labor. The use of the birthing chair or similar devices has been seen around the globe, not isolated to a particular region. 🌏🌍🌎I n fact, birthing chairs can be traced back to Egypt in the year 1450 B.C. Pictured on the walls of The Birth House at Luxor, Egypt, is an Egyptian queen giving birth on a stool. 👸🏽👶🏽 Some pretty amazing history! Did you use a birthing stool, or variation thereof, during your labor? 🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏽‍♀️🙋🏾‍♀️ If so, feel free to comment! 💗💗 #birthstools #midwiferycare #birthtools #historylesson #barefootmidwifery @cubsupport

On April 27, 1994, Nelson Mandela cast his vote for president of a newly democratic South Africa on the front steps of Ohlange High School near Durban. Mandla Nxumalo, whose picture I took on those very same steps this afternoon, was, on that April day, just shy of 21 and assigned to a post inside the doors immediately beyond the ballot box. Consequently, as he proudly explained today, he was the first person to shake hands with Mandela after the future president dropped his ballot into that box. “And the rest,” Nxumalo told us, “is history.”

For those who dont know, the Memorial Day holiday was created by former African-American slaves in the post-American Civil War. The Memorial Day holiday was originally started in Charleston, South Carolina by former African-American slaves on May 1st, 1865 to honor 257 deceased black Union soldiers who were imprisoned and buried in a mass grave at a Confederate prison camp. Their bodies were later dug out and put in proper gravesite burial fields in honor of those fallen black soldiers. Originally dubbing the Memorial Day holiday as the Second Independence Day of a Second American Revoluion, thousands of freed African-American slaves march, sing and celebrate to pay tribute to the deceased black Union soldiers who fought for their freedom in the American Civil War. Forgotten African-American history for the world to know. This is something that will never be taught in schools nor found in history books! #blackmemorialday #memorialday #knowyourhistory #wakeupblackpeople #blackhistorymonth #africanamericans #motivation #nevergiveup #inspiration #blackhistory #africanamericanhistory #historylesson #blackexcellence #hamptonpark #secondamericanrevolution #charlestonsouthcarolina #unitedstateshistory #americanhistory #americancivilwar #secondamericanrevolution #martyrsoftheracecourse

The moral message behind this is you can always convert your negative choices and bad mistakes into positive energy and stepping stones thatll help you change and be a better person. Gods plan is bigger than your mistakes, you just have to turn your mistakes into masterpieces. Using this picture as an example, African-American civil rights activists Malcolm X and Maya Angelou used their past mistakes, past wrongdoings and other peoples doubt about them as a driving force to achieve their own greatness in inspiring others. Part of being who you are is admitting your mistakes and wrongdoings by taking responsibility and accountability for your actions. All you have to do is take responsibility for your actions, be accountable for your results and take ownership in your mistakes. You can never let your past mistakes and past wrongdoings determine your future, use them as blueprints and learning lessons to make you stronger and wiser. Use your past mistakes, past wrongdoings and other peoples doubt about you as a driving force to be a better person today than you were before. And Im going to leave it as that and vice versa. Everyone on this Earth, no matter what they done, deserves a chance to be a better person. God works in mysterious ways, as everything in life happens for a reason. No matter how bad it is or how bad it gets, Im going to make it, and so will you, whoever is reading this! #malcolmx #ripmalcolmx #mayaangelou #ripmayaangelou #blackhistorymonth #africanamericans #blackhistory #africanamericanhistory #historylesson #blackexcellence #mistakes #learninglessons #lessonleaned #smartpeople #wisepeople #secondchance #inspiration #motivation #nevergiveup #godswill #godspurpose #godscalling #godsplan #encouragement #lifelessons #greaterthings #thankyougod #gobegreat #messageoftheday

Dont look behind you. 🙄 Its a giant Columbian mammoth. Who obviously just wants a hug. Tens of thousands of years old, unearthed from the ancient tar lake in the heart of LA. Among the 34 mammoths that have been uncovered at the Pits, one very special one was found nearly whole. 80% fully intact. Which is pretty remarkable. Scientists lovingly named him Zed. 💜 Dear Zed suffered a partial lobotomy when an excavator accidentally penetrated his noggin during digging, shearing off part of his skull. Which I guess is not the worst thing when youve met your death slowly sinking into a tar pit.

G L O R I A N A 👑 Another day at Buxton, fascinating talk from Helen Castor this morning, Elizabeth I: A Study in Insecurity. Helen was so eloquent, engaging and intelligent, and gave the most interesting and considered answers to audience questions that I have heard. I am really looking forward to reading her new book. Thanks for my lovely gift @libskerr 😘😘 This afternoon Helen Castor and Alison Weir held an interesting discussion exploring the challenges of historical drama versus history and why uncertain times have seen a resurgence in the popularity of both. Lots of talk about historical fiction/popular drama and its perception as actual historical truth, (🤣😂 I have watched Reign and The Tudors, surely they aren’t taken more seriously than they should be!?) historical films and various events of historical intrigue that never actually happened/have no basis in historical fact (including some by a popular author who shall remain nameless!!🤣😂). Such a wonderful afternoon, all enjoyed from our own private box, which was great as my broken toe was comfortable, at no risk of being trodden on and my crutches were not in anyone’s way!! #helencastor #alisonweir #buxtonliteraryfestival #buxtonoperahouse #elizabethI #elizabeth1st #elizabeth1astudyininsecurity #astudyininsecurity #history #historian #historynerd #historylesson #historylover

☹️ Well this is depressing. An installation at the La Brea pits depicting a distraught baby elephant frantically reaching for his mother while she struggles to free herself from this death trap of tar. I actually had to console a small child in tears next to me. I guess the artist was having a bad day. :(

The pits were discovered in the early 1900s. Large-scale organized excavation efforts started in 1913 when the owner of the land, George Allan Hancock, granted the Natural History Museum of LA County two years of exclusive digging rights. 750,000 specimens at 96 dig sites were extracted over those two years. Hancock was determined to protect the goldmine of fossils from being torn apart by developers, and in 1924, he donated 23 acres to LA County. He designated that the land was to be protected as a park for the exhibition of fossils unearthed there. Its been an active excavation site ever since.

Ok. This is cool. I had no idea that one of the most active paleontological research sites on the planet is in our own backyard. And smack in the heart of one of Americas largest cities, at that. The La Brea tar pits is home to one of the largest collections of Ice Age fossils in the world. More than 600 species have been found, starting in the early 1900s. (!!) Many of the discoveries were unearthed during other excavation projects; like when the demolition of a nearby department store uncovered a near-fully intact Columbian mammoth skeleton. Turns out, tar is a pain in the butt to remove from fossils, but an excellent preservation medium for bones and other organic matter. Paleontologists have even extracted preserved seeds and pollen. There are 16 different large mammal specimens in this pile of bones alone, including remains of a giant sloth, saber-toothed cat, American Mastodon and dire wolf. The COOLEST thing though, is that paleontologists are still actively working at this site today! Not only do they have active dig sites, they also have an in-house fossil lab. No, they wouldnt let me help unearth fossils. I did ask.

On this day in history, July 20 1969 at 10:56 p.m. EDT, American astronaut Neil Armstrong, 240,000 miles from Earth, speaks these words to more than a billion people listening at home: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Stepping off the lunar landing module Eagle, Armstrong became the first human to walk on the surface of the moon. The American effort to send astronauts to the moon has its origins in a famous appeal President John F. Kennedy made to a special joint session of Congress on May 25, 1961: “I believe this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to Earth.” At the time, the United States was still trailing the Soviet Union in space developments, and Cold War-era America welcomed Kennedy’s bold proposal. In 1966, after five years of work by an international team of scientists and engineers, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) conducted the first unmanned Apollo mission, testing the structural integrity of the proposed launch vehicle and spacecraft combination. Then, on January 27, 1967, tragedy struck at Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, when a fire broke out during a manned launch-pad test of the Apollo spacecraft and Saturn rocket. Three astronauts were killed in the fire. Despite the setback, NASA and its thousands of employees forged ahead, and in October 1968, Apollo 7, the first manned Apollo mission, orbited Earth and successfully tested many of the sophisticated systems needed to conduct a moon journey and landing. In December of the same year, Apollo 8 took three astronauts to the dark side of the moon and back, and in March 1969 Apollo 9 tested the lunar module for the first time while in Earth orbit. Then in May, the three astronauts of Apollo 10 took the first complete Apollo spacecraft around the moon in a dry run for the scheduled July landing mission.
