Staring straight into the amber eyes of a lion will always awaken a part of me that knows instinctively that I am not the true predator here. And yet - peoples amazing ability with tools and intelligence has made our species stronger by far and we are outcompeting every other predator on the planet. Lions are iconic - strong and proud and symbols of power throughout the world. But there are now more statues of lions in the world than there are real lions. Only around 20 000 remain, scattered in ever-smaller patches of wilderness. Its worth noting this decline this #WorldLionDay but also noting that we have the ability to halt and reverse it when we put our minds to it. Nine years ago, together with , and National Geographic, we set up the Big Cats Initiative as a long-term effort to halt the declineof big cats in the wild. The initiative supports efforts to save big cats through assessment, on-the-ground conservation, education, and global public-awareness campaigns. To date, this has supported more than 110 innovative projects in 28 countries that are helping big cats and communities thrive - all working to keep these wild eyes alight across Africa, ready to pierce our souls with the truth about who we really are. Ringed Kingfisher: A large and noisy kingfisher that is commonly found along larger rivers of Central and South America. With the different kingfisher species in the area, size of the bird actually correlates with the size of stream/pool they prefer to live at! The smaller the species the more time they spend in denser vegetation at smaller water bodies and the larger the species the more likely it is encountered around larger rivers, ponds and lakes. This minimizes competition and allows multiple very similar species of kingfishers to live in the same forest together. It’s World Lion Day. I am proud to be an ambassador for the Kevin Richardson Foundation. Kevin - @lionwhisperersa - does a fantastic job raising awareness of the plight of this alpha predator. Few people on the planet know more about lions than Kevin. . No animal is under greater pressure from encroachment in Africa and Kevin believes there are less than 15,000 lions left in Africa. That’s a calamitous fall of over 90% in the last 100 years. . This image - The Lion King - was taken with remotes in Kevin’s sanctuary. It is a reminder of what our grandchildren could miss out on. We should all do our bit in anyway we can. L A T E • L I G H T ☀️ ____________________ Happy belated World Lion Day! 🦁 ____________________ The difference between decent and great light cannot be underestimated, so being somewhere where the first or last light of the day isn’t blocked by trees, mountains or buildings. Or clouds, although that’s harder to control! The Masai Mara is a great for its open landscape, but its western edge is bound by the Oloololo escarpment, blocking the sunset. This lioness gave me a helping hand by climbing up a tree and thus catching some of the late light while the ground underneath her was in shadow. 🦁 . . . . . . . . . . . . #worldlionday #worldlionday2018 #masaimara #lions #lionguardians #lifethroughalens #africanature #africanwildlife #africanportraits #african_portraits #kenya #magicalkenya #discoverkenya #kichwatembo @andbeyondkichwatembo @andbeyondtravel @magicalkenya @magicalkenyauk

. #Repost @natgeo ・・・ Photo by @beverlyjoubert. Nine years ago, together with @dereckjoubert, and National Geographic, we set up the Big Cats Initiative as a long-term effort to halt the declineof big cats in the wild. World lion day. We found this battered old fellow with the remains of a buffalo in Kidepo Valley National Park. His facial scars show that he was still standing his ground in a fight and not running away #worldlionday #worldlionday2018 . #visituganda #traveluganda #travelphotography #lions #catsofinstagram #cats #naturephotography #wildlife #natgeo #nikonaustralia #nikonglobal
