History fact of the day: Did you know at exactly noon on this day in 1883, American and Canadian railroads began using four continental time zones to end the confusion of dealing with thousands of local times? * The bold move was emblematic of the power shared by the railroad companies. The need for continental time zones stemmed directly from the problems of moving passengers and freight over the thousands of miles of rail line that covered North America by the 1880s. Since human beings had first begun keeping track of time, they set their clocks to the local movement of the sun. Even as late as the 1880s, most towns in the U.S. had their own local time, generally based on “high noon,” or the time when the sun was at its highest point in the sky. As railroads began to shrink the travel time between cities from days or months to mere hours, however, these local times became a scheduling nightmare. Railroad timetables in major cities listed dozens of different arrival and departure times for the same train, each linked to a different local time zone. * Efficient rail transportation demanded a more uniform time-keeping system. Rather than turning to the federal governments of the United States and Canada to create a North American system of time zones, the powerful railroad companies took it upon themselves to create a new time code system. The companies agreed to divide the continent into four time zones; the dividing lines adopted were very close to the ones we still use today. * Most Americans and Canadians quickly embraced their new time zones, since railroads were often their lifeblood and main link with the rest of the world. However, it was not until 1918 that Congress officially adopted the railroad time zones and put them under the supervision of the Interstate Commerce Commission. * * * * * #history #instahistory #timezones #timezone #timezonehistory #onthisday #factoftheday #didyouknow #railroads #localtime #highnoon #oldwest #americanhistory #americana

The Peoples Temple was a Christian cult, established in Indianapolis in the 1950s by Jim Jones. After numerous accusations like the abuse of its members, including children, they moved to Guyana in 1977. Then on November 17, 1978, a group of journalists arrived at their settlement called “Jonestown” to investigate the group. At first they seemed to be welcoming and harmless. But soon it became obvious that many people living there were unhappy and wanted to leave. Leo Ryan, a congress man who accompanied the journalists, told them that he was willing to take anyone who wanted to leave back to the US. He was attacked with a knife and when they tried to leave, they were shot at the airstrip before they were able to enter the plane. Back in Jonestown their leader gathered everyone under the main pavilion, surrounded by armed guards. They mixed cyanide, sedatives and powdered fruit juice and gave it to the children. Then the adults lined up to drink the poison. When officials arrived the next day, they were shocked upon seeing hundreds of dead bodies. Jim Jones was found in a chair, dead from a single bullet wound to the head. . all those innocent lives lost. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below! My Year of the Book - Day 323: I enjoy making connections among books, and when your collection has become somewhat large in certain genres, there tends to be some topical overlap. By way of example, here are three volumes from familiar authors (familiar to western history buffs of a certain age, at least) covering some specific events from the midpoint of the 19th Century. Josiah Royce’s “California,” is a volume in the Western Americana series edited by Oscar Lewis. Written in 1948, it is subtitled “From the Conquest in 1846 to the Second Vigilance Committee in San Francisco,” so I’ve placed it between Bernard DeVoto’s classic “The Year of Decision: 1846” (1943) and George R. Stewart’s microhistory “Committee of Vigilance” (1964), which details the little known (today) 100-day period of mob vs. anti-mob clashes in 1851 San Francisco. DeVoto went on the win a Pulitzer in 1947 and the National Book Award in 1952. “Decision” covered much more than the California events Royce does, but he does write about the Bear Flag Revolt, part of the the “conquest” the latter handles in his book. Fascinating, I know, but what do you expect from an American and western history geek? :) #bookish #bernarddevoto #thewest #books #bookstagram #bookshelf #reading #bibliophile #mylibrary #americana #americanhistory #manifestdestiny #westwardexpansion #california #georgerstewart #bookcollection #rarebooks #firstedition #pulitzer #pulitzerprize

Tadeusz Kościuszko: professional revolutionary, international war hero, & all-around Good Dude • I wasnt surprised that this statue represents Tadeusz Kościuszko. Having learned about him in Wrocław, I knew he was famous in Poland for his titular role in the Kościuszko Uprising of 1794, an attempt to free Poland from Russian control. What DID surprise me is that a duplicate statue exists in, of all places...Detroit, Michigan. Huh? Yeah, turns out hes ALSO an American Revolutionary War hero, and kind of a cool guy. • So Kościuszko was a young Polish man living in France when, in 1776, word began to spread about the American Revolution. He went, hey, I like revolutions, got straight on the boat to America, and joined the Continental Army. He was so good at doing war stuff that he was only injured once in his seven years of American military service, when in 1781 he took a bayonet to the butt. 😬 He also literally did not get paid at all until AFTER the war (seven years later), so you know he wasnt in it for the money. Dude just really loved a good revolution. • Kościuszko went back to Poland in 1784, did his whole failed uprising thing there (I covered a bit of that in a previous post), then ultimately returned to America in 1797. This time he somehow became BFFs with Thomas Jefferson (thanks for the No Explanation on that one, Wikipedia), whom he made executor of his will. They wrote letters back and forth for the rest of their lives and Jefferson called him as pure a son of liberty as I have ever known, which is probably American for yeah, hes a good dude. Actually though, Kościuszko WAS a good dude. In his will, he stipulated that his American estate should be sold and the profit used to buy freedom for slaves (including Jeffersons), as well as the necessary education for them to lead independent lives afterward. Also, earlier in his life, as a lord of the manor in Poland, he had limited the male peasants obligatory service to two days a week and completely exempted the female peasants, despite his own financial difficulties at the time. He also argued for full citizenship rights for peasants and Jews. A pure son of liberty, indeed. •

Now more than ever, we need healing, honesty, and reflection. The hate that is growing in America is because we never addressed racism, discrimination, poverty, sexism.. the collective we have so much work to do. November 18, 1978 Jim Jones has Leo Ryan and those with him killed before they can leave after investigating Jonestown. In the evening Jones would order his people to drink the Flavor Aid drink that contained cyanide because their temple was no longer safe. Many members did not wish to die and so they were murdered by the loyal members. ⠀ ⠀ Jim Jones had started out as a pastor of Community Unity Church in Indianapolis in 1954. He soon became known for allowing African Americans to attend without segregation. His church would grow into the thousands of attendees and in the 1960s he would reveal that his beliefs were rooted in communism. The church would be moved to Redwood Valley, California in 1965 and again the church would grow and expand. The group would fall under suspicion which would result in the group fleeing to Guyana.⠀ ⠀ 📸 Image from All Thats Interesting| ⠀⠀ ⠀ Tags: #history #america #peoplestemple #jimjones #cyanide #guyana #usa #americanhistory #murder #jonestown #indianapolis #indiana #california #usa #news #apush #2018 #photos

In October 1863, Lt. Gen. Hill and his men stumbled upon what they thought was small group of the Union Army. Hill did no reconnaissance and it was a complete failure. It was a small engagement but total casualties for the Union were over 500 and over 1,000 for the Confederates. General Lee would lose much confidence in Hill after that stunt. Bristoe Station Battlefield Heritage Park is a stones throw away from Manassas and is often a forgotten place to visit. In 1861 and 1862 Bristoe Station housed Confederate Camps. 140 acres have been preserved with roughly 3 miles of walking trails and a cemetery of unmarked graves. In 1862 Federal troops found at least 82 men buried in this area. . . . . #civilwarhistory #americancivilwar #bristoestationbattlefield #bristowva #preserveourbattlefields #1863 #americanhistory #historynerd

Colorized photo of General William Belknap. Belknap was born in 1829 in New York. He attended Georgetown and became a lawyer, passing the bar in 1851. He moved to Iowa to start a law practice and joined the state militia. ________________________________ When the Civil War started, Belknap was given a commission as major of the 15th Iowa. He would see action at Shiloh, Corinth and Vicksburg, attaining the rank of colonel by the start of the Vicksburg Campaign. ________________________________ At Atlanta, Colonel Belknap and the 15th Iowa faced off against Colonel Harris Lampley and the 45th Alabama. Legend has it that Belknap took Lampley prisoner himself, grabbing him by the uniform and dragging him behind Union lines. Belknap would be promoted to the rank of brigadier general and brevetted a major general by war’s end. ________________________________ After the war, Belknap served as President Grant’s Secretary of War, although his tenure was full of controversy and scandal and he eventually resigned. He still practiced law occasionally until he died of a massive heart attack in Washington DC in 1890. ________________________________ #americancivilwar #warbetweenthestates #civilwarveteran #civilwar #acw #thecivilwar #wbts #history #ushistory #americanhistory #iowa #iowahistory #union #yankee #federal #atlanta #colorized #northandsouth #blueandgray #keephistoryalive

Did you know that People used to Ship Children via the Post Office? On January 1, 1913, the American Post Office added Parcel Post to its features which allowed people to access different types of goods throughout the country. Many parents started thinking that it could be a good idea to send their children via post. Most children were sent to their grandparents in the rural parts of the country. This was a girl in Pennsylvania that was carried by James Byerly to her relatives, arriving the same day in the afternoon. Post 534 - Along US Hwy 77 in Texas April 17, 2013 - First responders are called to a fire at the West, Texas Fertilizer Company. The company had several tons of ammonium nitrate stored on site. Sadly, at 7:50pm, roughly 20 minutes after the fire was reported, the facility exploded with the force of ten tons of TNT. The explosion, which residents reported felt like an earthquake, obliterated the fertilizer plant and caused a 93 ft wide crater. 15 people were killed, 160 were injured, dozens of buildings were destroyed or damaged. 12 of the 15 killed were firefighters sent to douse the flames. For Alexander, careful dress and formal language were shields against the worlds disrespect. - The Hamilton Affair, Elizabeth Cobbs - {Lets Talk about History Class} - What happened in American history class? Did I fall asleep during the lessons about Alexander Hamilton, one of Americas founding fathers, who helped pen The Constitution of the United States yada yada ya.  Snooze feast. - What if teachers took more liberties to make our journey back in time a memorable and rewarding one?  Instead of blandly reading something in a school textbook, our learning experience becomes more multifaceted?  A well written biography or a well researched historical fiction book that peaks our interests? - I was discussing this recently with @abibliophilesstyle - she told me about her experience & how her teacher would take real life accounts about real people to teach them history through books about those people.  That sounds like my kind of history class. - As an adult I have the freedom to craft a curriculum of my choosing to learn about people of the past, probably learning more than I remember from history class. - The Hamilton Affair, a historical fiction narrative written by a historian proved to be a surprising awakening to my curiosity about Hamilton. I had a full review ready for you here but my caption exceeded its limits (and IG wouldnt post this photo) so Ill share on the blog,  Ill link it in my profile when posted. - So tell me what books have prompted you to learn more? #Repost @amhistorymuseum • • • • • Teddy bear emoji has arrived! 🧸 Isnt this one cute? It has quite a story. In 1902, President Theodore Teddy Roosevelt, an enthusiastic game hunter, refused to shoot a black bear that had been tied to a tree. This act made headlines and a political cartoonist used his refusal as a metaphor for indecision on a political topic. The cartoon inspired Rose and Morris Michtom, candy store owners in New York, to make a stuffed bear toy. They named Theodore Roosevelt. Morris wrote to Roosevelt to ask his permission to make a small bear cub and call it Teddys Bear. Apparently Roosevelt agreed to lend his name to the new invention but doubted it would ever amount to much in the toy business. In 1903, the Ideal Toy Company was born, soon to become a multimillion-dollar business. In 1963, Benjamin Michtom, at that time the president of the Ideal Toy Company, decided that it would be appropriate to celebrate the Teddy Bears 60th birthday. He contacted Kermit Roosevelt, a grandson of Teddys, and asked his children to pose with it. Michtom said he would give the bear to him, with the understanding that it would later be given to the Smithsonian Institution. After the photo shoot, Kermits kiddos, Mark and Anne Roosevelt, decided they couldnt part with the bear and actually hid it from their parents. Aw! Eventually, however, the kids changed their minds, and the bear was given to the Smithsonian in January 1964. 🧸🧸🧸🧸🧸🧸🧸🧸🧸🧸🧸🧸 #TeddyBear #VintageToys #VintageBear #TeddyRoosevelt #BearsOfInstagram #VintageChildhood #AmericanHistory #PresidentialHistory
