Foil Painting Van Goghs Starry Night// The Starry Night is an oil on canvas by the Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh. Van Gogh’s work has a certain child-like simplicity to it, especially in the use of bold colors. A child is bound to be interested in the details in his pictures and this is a great learning opportunity for him too. Exposing artists of the world helps them develop a sense of culture and become aware of the beauty in the different styles and techniques in art. We set out @colorations.artoflearning Tempera from @discountschoolsupply, the paintings, q-tips, and foil as our canvas. The interesting metallic surface of foil creates a totally different look than painting on regular paper or canvas. Colors pop off the background while the children enjoys mixing colors and experimenting with new materials. The shiny surface adds an extra sensory element, and it makes a noise as you paint on it too. For this invitation to paint we used cotton buds (Q tips) as our tools which exposed the children to painting in a whole new way. This process allows the children to use their imagination, become mindful of the techniques they re using, and create in an open-ended way. #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #everychildisanartist #processart #earlylearning101 #preschoolart #bestofalameda #discountschoolsupply #powerofplay #powerofplay52 #getcreativewith #invitationtocreate #colorations #letthempaint #invitationtopaint #childcareadventures #smockson #processartforkids #letthempaint #letthemexplore #letthembelittle

Invitation to Create Leaves 🍃🍁🍂with Loose Parts// We read the story My Leaf Book“ and “We are Going on Leaf Hunt,” to the children. Books related to the concept explorations are motivating and appealing to children. Information can be gained from these books in context of a story. The pictures can impart a lot of meaning and information to help the children learn more about at topic, interact, relate their own experiences, and guide the childrens inquiry. To extend the literacy experience we set an invitation to create leaves with loose parts (translucent shapes, ceramic tiles, & flat marbles) with acrylic mirrors from @DiscountSchoolSupply. For a reference we placed an array of multi colored leaves and the book to be base of what the children could refer to if they wanted to. The mirrors are an excellent source of visual sensory input and provides visual feedback for experiments! Children are naturally drawn to the exploration of reflection, perception and appearance and it is a rather calming experience as they explore. What we love most about invitations is watching how the different combinations of materials inspire the children to createdifferent things. This type of play enhances a childs free creative play, exposure to sensory elements, requires concentration, fine motor and hand strength building, and is relaxing and stimulating. Tinker Trays are the perfect for limitless possibilities, foster problem solving skills, creativity, exposure to new materials, and decision making. Through this kind of free play children are really creating: using what they have and what they already know, and combining that to create a whole that’s greater than the parts. Loose parts and free play in childhood develops the creative genius of the future. #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #earlylearning101 #thekidsplay #bestofalameda #sensoryplay #smartlittlestars #tactileplay #ctinquiry #powerofplay52 #powerofplay #earlychildhoodeducation #earlylearning #getcreativewith #finemotorskills #childcareadventures #loosepartsplay #letthembelittle #intentionalteaching #invitationtoexplore #invitationtocreate #invitationtoplay #discountschoolsupply

Invitation to Explore and Paint Fall Leaves🍃🍁🍂// The integration of literacy into visual arts strengthens literacy skills as well as fostering creative thinking. After reading Little Tree by Loren Long which shed light on how and when leaves changes, the seasons, weather, colors and more we set a provocation to showcase the changing leaves around our school where they would explore them and then followed by painting their interpretations of the leaves or on the leaves with @colorations.artoflearning Tempera Paint from @discountschoolsupply. The children’s interest were definitely sparked when they saw that evolution of the changing colors from green to yellow to orange, to red to brown. A provocation is a technique used to stimulate childrens thinking, to inspire them artistically, to empower them to take control over their learning, to open their minds, to create an environment for reflection, to challenge children, to encourage creativity. The power of creativity and laying the foundation for that creativity through the process of art is essential to children. When children explore art ideas, they are testing possibilities and working through challenges, much like a scientist who experiments and finds solutions. Art allows children to make their own assessments, while also teaching them that a problem may have more than one answer. Instead of following specific rules or directions, the child’s brain becomes engaged in the discovery of “how” and “why.” MaryAnn Kohl . #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #everychildisanartist #processart #earlylearning101 #preschoolart #bestofalameda #discountschoolsupply #powerofplay #powerofplay52 #getcreativewith #invitationtocreate #colorations #letthempaint #invitationtopaint #childcareadventures #smockson #processartforkids #letthempaint #letthemexplore #letthembelittle

Election Day 🇺🇸// The Pre-K Class have been brainstorming their class name. Today is the day they vote! First they nominated a bunch of names, we narrowed it down to four, voted, & showed the children how to tally the votes. Children learn about themselves and the world they live in through experiences such as these. They are learning to vocalize their likes and dislikes, their interests, and their abilities through communicating what they want their class name to be. This role play is developing important complex thinking skills, by projecting what they desire. They are experiencing first hand what is going on currently in our society but on terms that they can grasp. We hope that they later on will carry on voting throughout life! #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #bestofalameda #election2018 #electionday #votevotevote

Invitation to Create Fall Soup 🍂🍁🌰// Making pretend soup with all things fall. Pumpkins, acorns, twigs, woods cookies, leaves, pine cones, river rocks, @colorations.artoflearning Liquid Water Color from @discountschoolsupply and kitchen utensils. They scooped and poured and transferred their soup from one pumpkin bowl to the next with bowls and kitchen utensils. They assorted containers and utensils helped encourage exploration, scooping, pouring, and more. Ample amount of language was discussed when adding ingredients, stirring and then scooping out handfuls of loose parts! Water play fosters creativity and enables children to experiment with science and math concepts. Children begin to understand and investigate with ideas such as more/less, same/different, many/few, empty/full, before/after, greater than/less than. Children also learn physics principles such as the effects of force (increasing the waterflow through increased force); effects of gravity (water runs downhill) etc. The social learnings from water play include collaboration, concentration, turn taking, problem solving, perseverance, self-regulation, and more. Children also gain physical learning through water play, such as precision in pouring, eye-hand coordination, and other skills. Exploring with water is captivating, engaging, engrossing and absorbing to almost all children. #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #earlylearning101 #thekidsplay #bestofalameda #sensoryplay #smartlittlestars #tactileplay #ctinquiry #powerofplay52 #powerofplay #earlychildhoodeducation #earlylearning #getcreativewith #childcareadventures #finemotor #finemotorskills #finemotoractivity #finemotoractivities #preschoolscience #stemed #stemeducation #steamed #steameducation

Fall Forest Small World Play// Small world play is simply when children use miniature items to reenact scenes from their own experiences, books, fairytales, etc. Many small worlds incorporate sensory play materials to enrich the experience and make it more realistic. Today we invited the children to explore a fall forest. We set up wood shapes & cookies from @discountschoolsupply, pine cones, fall leaves, twigs, grass, acorns, rocks, Koalabu Natural Unfinished Wooden Peg Doll Bodie, and @guidecraft_official Branch Blocks. Small worlds are great for many areas of development, including language, imaginary play, and sensory play. This type of play can be defined as where children accept and assign roles, and then act them out. To further enhance their play added the tactile elements creates endless possibilities with materials that heightens a new depth of sensory play. When children engage in play they break through the walls of reality, pretend to be someone or something different from themselves, and dramatize situations and actions to go along with the roles they have chosen to play. This type of play is an integral part of the developmental learning process by allowing children to develop skills in such areas as abstract thinking, literacy, math, and social studies, in a timely natural manner. They are able to play and manipulate a variety of materials and textures with stimulate their mind and body. It encourages language development, fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, focus and concentration. #preschool #alamedaca #ilovealameda #bestofalameda #invitationtoexplore #discountschoolsupply #earlylearning #earlychildhoodeducation #earlylearning101 #getcreativewith #ctinquiry #powerofplay #powerofplay52 #blockplay #smallworldplay #tinkertrays #loosepartsplay #blockplay #tinkertrays #loosepartsplay #childcareadventures #tactileplay #sensoryplay

Spider Web Fine Motor Invitation// This is an excellent experience to develop fine motor skills. The sensory bin is filled with spiders, masking tape to create the web, and tweezers/tongs a the tool to remove the spiders into the cauldron. The children had to concentrate on keeping the tweezers/tongs in between the web and pull up gently so that they don’t drop the spider or get it caught on the tape. By using tweezers to pick up the spiders the children used their finger muscles to squeeze the tweezers in order to pick up each spider. This fine motor skill activity helps strengthen the children’s hands for pencil grasp. The children had moments where they realized it wasn’t as easy as they thought it would be. Which had the children get focused and formulate new strategies on holding the tweezers/tongs together tightly while bringing the spider back up out of the web. #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #earlylearning101 #thekidsplay #bestofalameda #sensoryplay #smartlittlestars #tactileplay #ctinquiry #powerofplay52 #powerofplay #earlychildhoodeducation #earlylearning #getcreativewith #childcareadventures #finemotor #finemotorskills #finemotoractivity #finemotoractivities

Invitation to Create a Haunted House//.We set out black and white @magnatiles from @discountschoolsupply, LED tea lights, creepy crawlers, eyeballs, spider webs, skeletons, and jack-o-lanterns to invite the children to create a haunted house with loose parts. There is a natural progression of block play, children have to learn how to move and manipulate various shaped objects, big and small, as well as have the fine motor control to “click” them into place. Building helps children enhance their visual-spatial skills which is crucial for reading readiness. Encourages thinking and reasoning: These skills are what make children become well-rounded, independent and successful adults! Involves focus and patience: Children need to work slowly and carefully to be successful at creating their designs. Using the imagination boosts cognitive, academic, language and social growth. When building, children need to decide what will or won’t work. Through building, children learn to experiment and make new discoveries about how things work. Often times children play with their peers when building so it helps foster teamwork and cooperation. Builds confidence: Once that masterpiece is finished, children are so proud of their accomplishments. It increases their belief in themselves. Providing loose parts in building give more variables an object can offers, which in turn also creates more possibilities. Children gain a higher level of learning and understanding of how things work. Invitations enhance a childs free creative play, exposure to sensory elements, requires concentration, and is truly relaxing and stimulating. Through this kind of experience children are really creating: using what they have and what they already know, and combining that to create a whole that’s greater than the parts. #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #earlylearning101 #thekidsplay #bestofalameda #sensoryplay #smartlittlestars #tactileplay #ctinquiry #powerofplay52 #powerofplay #earlychildhoodeducation #earlylearning #getcreativewith #childcareadventures #stemed #stemeducation #blockplay

Invitation to Paint Salvador Dali Portraits// Dali was a Spanish painter who was known to be one of the most unusual artists of the twentieth century. Hes also known for his paintings that were called surrealistic. Most of them were filled with mysterious objects or familiar objects that have been oddly changed. Today we set out an invitation to paint portraits of the artist himself. With an array of Dali Portraits, @discountschoolsupply Construction Paper, @colorations.artoflearning Tempera Paint, Glue, and Pipe Cleaners to create his famous mustache. A provocation such as this is used to stimulate childrens thinking, to inspire them artistically, to empower them to take control over their learning, to open their minds, to create an environment for reflection, to challenge children, to encourage creativity. The simple joys of enjoying the journey of painting lets the children engulf in being present, creative, and engaged. Children who paint learn to think with an open mind, to look at situations creatively. Because there is no right way in the arts, children who paint can be proud to be unique and to express their artistic style. #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #everychildisanartist #processart #earlylearning101 #preschoolart #bestofalameda #discountschoolsupply #powerofplay #powerofplay52 #getcreativewith #invitationtocreate #colorations #letthempaint #invitationtopaint #childcareadventures #smockson #processartforkids #letthempaint #letthemexplore #letthembelittle

Invitation to Create a Monster with Loose Parts & Play-dough // Today we invited the children to create their very own monsters with @colorations.artoflearning play-dough and tinker trays filled with loose parts from @discountschoolsupply after reading the story Theres a Monster in Your Book by Tom Fletcher. The integration of literacy into loose parts play combined with play dough strengthens literacy skills, fosters creative thinking, and extends the power of a book through play. What we love most about play-dough invitations is watching how the different combinations of materials inspire the children to create in different ways. Play-dough has many benefits for children. The most important is the fine-motor skill development. It is great for strengthening muscle tone in little hands – squishing, squashing, rolling and flattening play dough all develop childrens muscles and encourage pre-writing and other skills such as cutting with a scissors, using a tweezers and holding a pencil. It also engages the children in their senses. Invitations enhance a childs free creative play, exposure to sensory elements, requires concentration, and are truly relaxing and stimulating. Tinker Trays are the perfect for limitless possibilities, foster problem solving skills, creativity, exposure to new materials, and decision making. Through this kind of free play children are really creating: using what they have and what they already know, and combining that to create a whole that’s greater than the parts. Mummy Wrap// After reading the story Skeleton Meets the Mummy by Steve Metzger we invited the children to make the story come to life by allowing them to wrap each other like a mummy. The integration of literacy into play strengthens literacy skills as well as fostering creative thinking. The children got a roll of toilet paper to wrap around a friend in order to turn them into a mummy. The children became very methodical in their wrapping techniques. Because of the fragility of the toilet paper, it would often break, so the children had to figure out solutions of how to continue wrapping. This was also a great for body awareness due to the fact that as they wrapped they were communicating what area of the body they were wrapping. The children enhanced their motor planning, visual perception, critical thinking, problem solving, and speech/language skills. Experiences such as this teaches the child to sequence a multi-step activity as well as challenge their memory by progressively increasing the demands of the activity. #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #earlylearning101 #thekidsplay #bestofalameda #sensoryplay #smartlittlestars #tactileplay #ctinquiry #powerofplay52 #powerofplay #earlychildhoodeducation #earlylearning #getcreativewith #childcareadventures #literacymatters #languageandliteracy #playmatters

Invitation To Explore Skeletons, Bones, & X-Rays on the Light Table// With the children excited as can be about halloween we decided to let the children explore skeletons through X-Ray images and loose parts. Children are sensory learners by nature. Integrating hands-on experiences whenever possible is an important way to reinforce new concepts, categorization of images and objects for children. It encourages children to participate in their abilities to naturally differentiate items. During this invitation, we encouraged the children to observe what they were seeeing. The children kept revisiting the materials, exploring the x-rays, and talking to one another as their hands felt the bones, q-tips, and skeletons. When combining this invitation to explore on our @guidecraft_official Light Table from @discountschoolsupply it provided as an excellent source of visual sensory input and made the items really POP! Children are naturally drawn to the glow of the table and are often calmed by the visual stimulation as they explore a the center. “Light has a way of focusing our attention and illuminating new perspectives.” #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #earlylearning101 #thekidsplay #bestofalameda #sensoryplay #smartlittlestars #tactileplay #ctinquiry #powerofplay52 #powerofplay #earlychildhoodeducation #earlylearning #getcreativewith #childcareadventures #loosepartsplay #lighttable #lighttableplay

Invitation to Create Wtiches Brew// Science in the early years is all about exploring, asking questions, and curiosity. We used @colorations.artoflearning Glitter & Liquid Water Colors from @discountschoolsupply , Baking Soda, Dish Soap, Vinegar, @learningresources twisty droppers/color mixer, pipettes, beakers, conical flask bottles, ladles, cauldrons, creepy crawlers, google eyes, and squirt bottles. The base mixture entailed the baking soda, glitter and dish soap. They used the pipette/twisty droppers to draw vinegar and squeeze it into the container to make the chemical reactions for their potions. This took some time which enhanced their fine motor skills & hand-eye coordination. When vinegar and baking soda mixes, it creates a chemical reaction due to the pH rating of each ingredient. Vinegar is an acid, and baking soda is a base. When the two react, carbon dioxide is produced. This causes the dish soap and other ingredients to rise out of the container quickly as the other ingredients get carried away with the carbon dioxide gas. When the children are freely given the opportunity to experiment cause and effect, they use and discover so much language, figure out why things happen, and cultivate critical thinkers that can problem solve. Science taps into the whys of the life which supports their natural curiosities as they discover the world around them. #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #earlylearning101 #thekidsplay #bestofalameda #sensoryplay #smartlittlestars #tactileplay #ctinquiry #powerofplay52 #powerofplay #earlychildhoodeducation #earlylearning #getcreativewith #childcareadventures #finemotor #finemotorskills #finemotoractivity #finemotoractivities #preschoolscience #stemed #stemeducation #steamed #steameducation

Pumpkin & Gourd Washing// Practical life activities are not only enticing they are important activities for young children. Activities for care of the environment are both fun and great for developing order, concentration, coordination, and independence. There are a series of steps that children will go through for a cleaning activity. That’s wonderful for developing concentration, organization, and the ability to follow directions. Pumpkin washing was very attractive to children because they love anything that involves water and it was totally out of the norm. By adding the real life cleaning supplies sponges, towels, and soap that go with it, makes it an all encompassing activity that they are proud to do over and over again! #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #everychildisanartist #earlylearning101 #bestofalameda #discountschoolsupply #powerofplay #powerofplay52 #getcreativewith #colorations #childcareadventures #smockson #preschoolscience #invitationtoplay #invitationtoexplore #sensoryplay #sensoryplayideas #sensoryplaytime #sensoryactivities #tactileplay

Balance the Pumpkins & Gourds// We set out this invitation for the children to explore how to balance the pumpkins & gourds on the recycled paper rolls. STEM preschool activities are designed to engage and stretch their thinking. Introducing the engineering and design process is a natural fit due to the fact that children already like to build and problem solve. This invitation was a perfect opportunity to change a simple building activity to challenge them to think and create in new ways and enhancing their interpretation and perception of weight, height, and balancing. There was no wrong or right way to do this activity and the possibilities were truly endless. By setting out the pumpkins/gourds and recycled paper rolls the children were truly left to explore and build! They stretched and grew their problem-solving skills by collaborating with one another on how to balance the pumpkins/gourds. Through these trials, children are able to analyze the situation more critically and come up with solutions. STEM provides awesome real life lessons that are so valuable. #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #earlylearning101 #thekidsplay #bestofalameda #sensoryplay #smartlittlestars #tactileplay #ctinquiry #powerofplay52 #powerofplay #earlychildhoodeducation #earlylearning #getcreativewith #childcareadventures #stemed #stemeducation #blockplay

Pumpkin Art Party// Children usually prefer invitations that stimulates their curiosity and gives free reign to their imaginations and creativity. One of the best ways to enhance their natural curiosity is to introduce a wide variety of the materials we call “loose parts” alongside a process art experience. The materials and process come with no specific set of directions. Today our pumpkin decorating station included: @colorations.artoflearning tempera paint, glitter, sequins, confetti paper, foam shapes, and glue, from @discountschoolsupply. The children were able to turn the pumpkin into whatever they desire. These materials invited conversations and interactions, and they encouraged collaboration and cooperation. Loose parts plus process art promote social competence because they support creativity and innovation. Children pay more attention to the color, the shape, and the texture of pumpkin since their canvas was out of the norm. #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #everychildisanartist #processart #earlylearning101 #preschoolart #bestofalameda #discountschoolsupply #powerofplay #powerofplay52 #getcreativewith #invitationtocreate #colorations #letthempaint #invitationtopaint #childcareadventures #smockson #letsplayatoz_a #letsplayatoz_a #processartforkids #letthempaint #letthemexplore #letthembelittle

Invitation to Shave Pumpkins// Shaving cream is a material with endless possibilities that heightens a new depth of sensory play. The children were invited to shave the pumpkins with craft sticks from @DiscountSchoolSupply and later on they asked to add in color with @colorations.artoflearning Liquid Water Colors. In a sense this is a practical life skill because children see their parents shaving. Practical life activities are not only enticing they are important activities for young children. Activities for care are awesome for developing order, concentration, coordination, and independence. When the children play with a sensory materials such as shaving cream, they are playing with a variety of materials and textures which stimulate the mind & body through the tactile experience. Children learn best and retain the most information when they engage their senses. Many of our favorite memories are associated with one or more of our senses. Sensory play is, quite simply, any activity that stimulates the senses. This includes the five main senses of touch, smell, sight, taste, and sound, as well as the two not-as-frequently-mentioned senses: vestibular (sense of balance) and proprioceptive (sense of where each body part is in relation to the rest). #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #everychildisanartist #earlylearning101 #bestofalameda #discountschoolsupply #powerofplay #powerofplay52 #getcreativewith #colorations #childcareadventures #smockson #preschoolscience #invitationtoplay #invitationtoexplore #sensoryplay #sensoryplayideas #sensoryplaytime #sensoryactivities #tactileplay

Geo Pumpkins// Making a geoboard pumpkin was an amazing way to explore pumpkin math concepts and STEM with the children. It expanded the traditional geoboard concept into a three-dimensional experience. We set out rubber bands, push pins, golf tees, mallets, and real hammers. Real tools are far more interesting to children which naturally leads them to be more positively & constructively invested in their use & in the experience as a whole. The use of real tools give children a sense of accomplishment & a truer inner joy for constructing, building, engineering, & creating. The childs self-awareness & an awareness of others around them is heightened as the consequences of misusing the tools are very personal & very real. Through this process we are striving to honor the children’s abilities & intelligence to send the message that they are capable constructors & engineers. There are so many skills involved in this geoboard pumpkin activity. Fine motor skills when holding the golf tees by pinching them as they grasp them & maneuvering the rubber bands. Gross motor skills when hammering the golf tees into the pumpkins. Eye–hand coordination is the coordinated control of eyemovement with hand movement (hammering the golf tees), & the processing of visual input to guide reaching & grasping along with the use of proprioception of the hands to guide the eyes. Creative expression by using the rubber bands and push pins to create original designs, when making geometric shapes and 3D exploration of the shapes, along with patterning they explore math. Science through observing how the pumpkins changed with the insertion/removal of the golf tees/pushpins & rubber bands. Lastly endless amounts of literacy with so much language and conversation going on it was rich with collaboration communication, & comparison. recognition, and one-to-one correspondence. #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #earlylearning101 #thekidsplay #bestofalameda #sensoryplay #smartlittlestars #tactileplay #ctinquiry #powerofplay52 #powerofplay #earlychildhoodeducation #earlylearning #getcreativewith #childcareadventures #finemotor #finemotorskills #finemotoractivity #finemotoractivities

Invitation to Drip Paint on Pumpkins// Process art has a beautiful way of transforming into STEAM experience. We set different sized pumpkins flat or elevated on a stand in a sensory bin along with Colorations® Tempera Paint that we diluted with water from @DiscountSchoolSupply. When children experiment with materials, they dabble in science. Children who feel able to experiment and to make mistakes feel free to invent new ways of thinking, which extends well beyond the art. Through the process of experimenting and exploring the child is using creative and critical thinking skills. Scientists, mathematicians, engineers and artists all use the same critical thinking skills to find new and innovative solutions. Since their tool was a spoon where they were able to pour paint onto the pumpkin and this led the children to watch the dripping paint intently. During those moments of observations we explained what gravity was to the children, what keeps people and objects on the ground and causes objects to fall toward the Earth. By pouring the paint on top of the pumpkin it is using the Earth’s gravitational pull to direct the paint. There was a lot of talk about dripping, lines, color mixing, and lots of gravity. Thank you for the inspiration @friendsartlab & @2art.chambers#preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #everychildisanartist #processart #earlylearning101 #preschoolart #bestofalameda #discountschoolsupply #powerofplay #powerofplay52 #getcreativewith #invitationtocreate #colorations #letthempaint #invitationtopaint #childcareadventures #smockson #processartforkids #letthempaint #letthemexplore #letthembelittle #steameducation

OOEY GOOEY Pumpkin OOBLECK// Today the children made some Ooey Gooey Pumpkin Oobleck! They helped us pour in the corn starch, water, and Colorations® liquid water color from @DiscountSchoolSupply. Oobleck is a fun mixture that is a great sensory activity that has scientific elements. Oobleck is so enticing. The really cool thing about oobleck is that it’s neither a liquid nor a solid. It’s actually a suspension (known as a non-Newtonian Fluid) and will behave like either, depending on the amount of pressure you apply. When the children squeeze it in their hands it will feel like a solid, but when they open their hand, it will flow over and between the fingers like a liquid. This activity is an extension of the childrens exposure to states of matter. Research shows that sensory play builds nerve connections in the brains pathways, which leads to the childs ability to complete more complex learning tasks. Sensory play supports cognitive growth, promotes language development, fosters fine and gross motor skills, problem solving skills and social interaction. #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #everychildisanartist #earlylearning101 #bestofalameda #discountschoolsupply #powerofplay #powerofplay52 #getcreativewith #colorations #childcareadventures #smockson #preschoolscience #invitationtoplay #invitationtoexplore #sensoryplay #sensoryplayideas #sensoryplaytime #sensoryactivities #tactileplay

Invitation to Paint on Pumpkins// Today we set out a variety of white pumpkins as our canvas, Colorations® Tempera Paint, and all different kinds of paint brushes from @DiscountSchoolSupply. There are so many reasons to embrace natural materials while doing art. Children pay more attention to the color, the shape, and the texture of natural materials. The pumpkins came with no specific set of directions, and the children were simply invited to explore the pumpkin through painting. The pumpkins invited conversations and interactions, and they encouraged collaboration and cooperation. These types of process art activities promote social competence because they support creativity and innovation. #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #everychildisanartist #processart #earlylearning101 #preschoolart #bestofalameda #discountschoolsupply #powerofplay #powerofplay52 #getcreativewith #invitationtocreate #colorations #letthempaint #invitationtopaint #childcareadventures #smockson #letsplayatoz_a #letsplayatoz_a #processartforkids #letthempaint #letthemexplore #letthembelittle

Exploding Pumpkins// Who can resist an oozing, colorful, erupting, oh and did we mention aromatic science activity? Volcanoes are indirectly related to smell, it’s not the primary focus of the project, this was certainly a fall smelling volcanoe! It makes for an extra special sensory experience. We placed different sized pumpkins for the children to compare and contrast. We cut out the top of the round orange pumpkin. Next, we asked the children to make a prediction: what will happen when we add baking soda and vinegar all together in the pumpkin? When we cultivate learners into critical thinkers and creative problem solvers, we also tap into their natural curiosities and desires to find out about the whys they ponder that will provide a culture in which children can discover new questions to ponder and explore. When you combine baking soda and vinegar a chemical reaction occurs that releases carbon dioxide. The baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is a base while the vinegar (acetic acid) is an acid. When they react together they form carbonic acid, which breaks apart into water and carbon dioxide, and creates fizzing as it escapes. Children are intrigued by cause and effect phenomena and delight in being surprised. When they observe experiments such as these it becomes a tool for understanding relationships, making predictions, and figuring out why things happen. We added Colorations® liquid water colors from @DiscountSchoolSupply to the vinegar to enhance color recognition. We also used basters, pipettes, and @LearningResources twisty droppers to enhance their fine motor skills. #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #earlylearning101 #thekidsplay #bestofalameda #sensoryplay #smartlittlestars #tactileplay #ctinquiry #powerofplay52 #powerofplay #earlychildhoodeducation #earlylearning #getcreativewith #childcareadventures #finemotor #finemotorskills #finemotoractivity #finemotoractivities #preschoolscience #stemed #stemeducation #steamed #steameducation

Pumpkin Exploration// Pumpkins, pumpkins all around! One of the best things about fall is that there are pumpkins everywhere, making it easy to have a Pumpkin Science Exploration! We set this invitation to explore with Acrylic mirrors from @DiscountSchoolSupply which is an excellent source of visual sensory input and provides visual feedback for experiments! Children are naturally drawn to the exploration of reflection, perception and appearance and it is a rather calming experience as they explore. We also placed one of the non digital technologies that children loved to use is Excellerations magnifying glasses. The magnifying glasses provides a different visual field where they are able to compare the sizes and colors from several viewing distances. Through this experience the children explore their 5 senses to explore the insides of a pumpkin. By allowing the children to explore the inside of a pumpkin for a science activity they incorporate the 5 senses into it & becomes even more engaging and meaningful to the children. Inviting children to use their senses when learning something new helps them to better understand the components of a pumpkin, after all children learn best through their hands. We asked questions such as, “How does it feel?” or “What does it smell like?” to develop oral language, communication, and vocabulary. Skills developed in this activity: Concept of the 5 Senses (sight, hear, feel, smell, and taste), Sensory skills, Pretend play, Observational skills and Fine motor skills. We also used @learningresources tweezers for the children that were hesitant to touch the insides of the pumpkin. #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #earlylearning101 #thekidsplay #bestofalameda #sensoryplay #smartlittlestars #tactileplay #ctinquiry #powerofplay52 #powerofplay #earlychildhoodeducation #earlylearning #getcreativewith #childcareadventures #finemotor #finemotorskills #finemotoractivity #finemotoractivities #preschoolscience #sensoryactivities #tactileplay

Invitation to Create Pumpkins with Loose Parts & Play-dough // Today we invited the children to create pumpkins with play-dough and a tinker tray filled with loose parts from @DiscountSchoolSupply. What we love most about invitations is watching how the provocation of the pumpkin ignites different combinations to use the materials and inspire the children to create in different ways. Loose parts give the ability to be creative and the freedom of imagination. Loose parts are dynamic in nature, which brings about authenticity of ideas. The more variables an object offers the more possibilities and creativity the object will have. Children will have a higher level of learning and understanding of how things work. Invitations enhance a childs free creative play, exposure to sensory elements, requires concentration, and are truly relaxing and stimulating. Through this kind of experience children are really creating: using what they have and what they already know, and combining that to create a whole that’s greater than the parts. #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #earlylearning101 #thekidsplay #bestofalameda #sensoryplay #smartlittlestars #tactileplay #ctinquiry #powerofplay52 #powerofplay #earlychildhoodeducation #earlylearning #getcreativewith #finemotorskills #childcareadventures #loosepartsplay #discountschoolsupply #earlyeducation #earlyeducationmatters #looseparts

Invitation to Explore Your Name// Taking the time to build fine motor skills is just as important as teaching children the letters and sounds in the alphabet, numbers, counting, etc. Having strong hand muscles and fine motor skills is the foundation that children need to grasp a pencil, control their writing instruments, use scissors, and ultimately have good handwriting. Thats why we always strive to continue developing fine motor skills. We all know that children love stickers. It takes time to build strength in their little hands. They need exercise and practice to build strong muscles and in developing fine motor skills. Its so important to expose activities that help students work and strengthen these muscles. Lets face it, a childs name is the most important word to them. Its a word that parents, caregivers, friends, family, and they use every single day. It follows them their whole life! So because children love stickers and they love their names we aimed to further bring awareness to identifying and recognizing their own names as will as understanding plus visually seeing the motions of each letter in their names. . #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #earlylearning101 #thekidsplay #bestofalameda #sensoryplay #smartlittlestars #tactileplay #ctinquiry #powerofplay52 #powerofplay #earlychildhoodeducation #earlylearning #getcreativewith #childcareadventures #finemotor #finemotorskills #finemotoractivity #finemotoractivities

Invitation to Write your Name in Neon Play Sand// In addition to all the letter learning activities we’ve been doing recently we’ve also started some activities to work on our pre-writing skills! For this particular pre-writing activity we primarily decided to do it on our @guidecraft_official light table. The light table is an excellent source of visual sensory input where children are naturally drawn to the glow of the table and are often calmed by the visual stimulation as they explore a the center. Pre-writing skills aren’t as much about creating letters and words as they are about things like muscle development, coordination, directional movements, and processing sensory information. Pre-writing practices such as this strengthens muscles in the forearm (providing stability & strength), helps children practice coordinating multiple muscles at once (like thumb/middle/index fingers doing the action, ring/pinky fingers providing stability), and processing sensory information (pressure/weight of lines created) plus so much more! The children experimented with mark-making and letter formation in a tray of neon play sand from @DiscountSchoolSupply with their name as point of reference. This multi-sensory, tactile approach to pre-writing skills and letter formation is a playful, hands-on way to learn. It is age appropriate, open-ended, creative and fun, rather than being a closed activity with only one outcome or objective in mind, like a worksheet. It encourages thinking skills and investigative playful learning. #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #earlylearning101 #thekidsplay #bestofalameda #sensoryplay #smartlittlestars #tactileplay #ctinquiry #powerofplay52 #powerofplay #earlychildhoodeducation #earlylearning #getcreativewith #childcareadventures #finemotor #finemotorskills #finemotoractivity #finemotoractivities #lighttable #lighttableplay #prewritingskills #prewritingactivity

Can You Make Your Name?// This invitation to create their name with loose parts from @discountschoolsupply was a great way to enhance not only heir name recognition but letters as well. Sorting loose part letters in order to spell their name to help the children learn the alphabet, sort, and differentiate between lowercase/uppercase. The children instantly dived into this activity by finding the letters in the tinker trays to match the letters in their name. This activity opened up discussion through categorization about the letters where they were comparing who had the same letters, who had different ones, which names were shorter/longer, and whose name started with what letter. This even ignited teamwork when other children were struggling to find certain letters. Children are really motivated to find and talk about the letters in their names which also boosts the childrens awareness of their own identity. . #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #earlylearning101 #thekidsplay #bestofalameda #sensoryplay #smartlittlestars #tactileplay #ctinquiry #powerofplay52 #powerofplay #earlychildhoodeducation #earlylearning #getcreativewith #finemotorskills #childcareadventures #loosepartsplay #earlyed #earlyeducation #earlyeducationmatters #letsplayatoz_a #letsplayatoz_a

Tape Resistant Painting with the First Letter of Your Name// Tape is truly and absolutely one of the best art materials ever. Each step of this activity was fun! Before hand we created the first letter of each childs name with tape. Lets face it, a childs name is the most important word to them. Its a word that parents, caregivers, friends, family, and they use every single day. It follows them their whole life! So because children love their names we aimed to further bring awareness to identifying and recognizing their own names as will as understanding plus visually seeing the motions of the first letter of their name. We set out Colorations® water color paints, construction paper, and paint brushes from @DiscountSchoolSupply. The children painted around and over the first letter of their name. Painting helps the body and brain integrate information as well as being relaxing creative way to express feelings. Children learn about color, shape and spatial relationships, it improves fine motor developmental, strengthens finger and hand muscles, focuses on process not finished product, therapeutic-express feelings without words, promotes social skills-sharing paint, taking turns, working together are all a good social experience, stimulates creativity and imagination, and develops communication and language skills when done as a group setting. After the masterpiece dried we got to see the beautiful masterpiece of the first letter of their name! #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #everychildisanartist #processart #earlylearning101 #preschoolart #bestofalameda #discountschoolsupply #powerofplay #powerofplay52 #getcreativewith #invitationtocreate #colorations #letthempaint #invitationtopaint #childcareadventures #smockson #everychildisanartist #earlyed #earlyeducation #earlyeducationmatters #letsplayatoz_a #letsplayatoz_a

Invitation to Paint a Sunrise// To begin this process art activity we read Moonbears Sunrise by Frank Asch. Books related to the concept explorations are motivating and appealing to children. Information can be gained from the books we read in context of a story. The pictures can impart a lot of meaning and information to help the children learn more about a topic, relate their own experiences, and guide the childrens inquiry. To extend this literary experience we set out the book and a provocation; pictures of sunrises all over the world. The purpose of a this invitation is to provoke discussions, questions, interests, creativity, and ideas. The children were able to mix different colors of our Colorations® tempera paint from @DiscountSchoolSupply with paint brushes and construction paper. Process art such as this, allows children the chance to discover how things work and explore different materials. Process art works well for kids as there is no right or wrong way to create. They can create in a way that works for them, making their own decisions. Process art links strongly to science discovery. They are trying out materials, ideas and feelings, and discovering possibilities. This activity was a great way to foster language development; the children were able to discuss the sunrises they created, comparing the different colors, designs, and places where their sunrises took place. The children also experimented with cause and effect while mixing colors. #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #everychildisanartist #processart #earlylearning101 #preschoolart #bestofalameda #discountschoolsupply #powerofplay #powerofplay52 #getcreativewith #invitationtocreate #childcareadventures #smockson #everychildisanartist #invitationtoexplore #earlyliteracy #earlyliteracymatters #earlyeducationmatters #earlyed #ctinquiry #letsplayatoz_a #letsplayatoz_a

Invitation to Bob for Apples// We set up this simple “bobbing” for apples fall activity with mixing bowls filled with water, tweezers, tongs, and apples from @learningresources. They were able to get moving and practice their motor skills by bobbing and transferring the apples. The areas enhanced for the children during this invitation was fine motor skills through using the tweezers and tongs to pick up the apple. Fine Motor Skills involve the use of precise and coordinated movements of the fingers to perform hand use tasks. Fine motor skills are necessary for completing daily tasks such as dressing (using buttons/zippers), feeding (using mealtime utensils), being a student (using a pencil, keyboard, or scissors), and leisure/play activities (drawing, playing many musical instruments). Tweezers and tongs are a particularly useful example of a tool that provides opportunities for the refinement of hand-eye coordination and fine motor control. It allows a subtle and indirect preparation for writing by gently encouraging the hand to curl into the pincer grip used for writing. Working with tweezers and tongs also provides an engaging exercise which captures a childs attention and promotes attention to detail and sustained concentration. By setting out the various tools (tweezers vs. tongs) they worked on problem solving as they tried to figure out which tools were best for scooping the apples. Math was also a part of this process. The children figured out how many apples were in the mixing bowl and how many they were transferring into the wooden bowl. Counting the apples enhanced their math skills and number recognition, and one-to-one correspondence. #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #earlylearning101 #thekidsplay #bestofalameda #sensoryplay #smartlittlestars #tactileplay #ctinquiry #powerofplay52 #powerofplay #earlychildhoodeducation #earlylearning #getcreativewith #childcareadventures #finemotor #finemotorskills #finemotoractivity #finemotoractivities #learningresources

Invitation to Create Apples with Loose Parts & Playdough // Today we invited the children to create their very own apples with play dough and tinker trays filled with loose parts from @DiscountSchoolSupply. After reading the story How Do Apples Grow? by Betsy Maestro we invited the children to create apples. The integration of literacy into loose parts play combined with play dough strengthens literacy skills, fosters creative thinking, and extend the power of a book through play. What we love most about play dough invitations is watching how the different combinations of materials inspire the children to create in different ways. Play dough has many benefits for children. Loose parts and free play in childhood develops the creative genius of the future. #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #earlylearning101 #thekidsplay #bestofalameda #sensoryplay #smartlittlestars #tactileplay #ctinquiry #powerofplay52 #powerofplay #earlychildhoodeducation #earlylearning #getcreativewith #finemotorskills #childcareadventures #loosepartsplay

Invitation to Thread with Beads// This was a simple but fun filled fine motor activity. We set out this invitation with an assortment of beads. The children simply practice their fine motor skills by threading the beads. When they are practicing using fine motor pincer grasp in order to manipulate the beads they enhance their fine motor skills by building hand muscles and dexterity which are essential for a proper pencil grasp. Their Hand/Eye coordination was enhanced while being able to line up the holes on the beads with the straw. Color recognition and visual discrimination when the children are recognizing the differences in the colors, putting the beads in groups, creating patterns, or sorting them. #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #earlylearning101 #thekidsplay #bestofalameda #sensoryplay #smartlittlestars #tactileplay #ctinquiry #powerofplay52 #powerofplay #earlychildhoodeducation #earlylearning #getcreativewith #childcareadventures #finemotor #finemotorskills #finemotoractivity #finemotoractivities

#Monday came too soon. My brother @cocoandqueso and I soaking up the sun yesterday at our new house 🏡 Have a great week y’all!

Invitation to Paint Andy Warhols Banana// A key figure in the Pop Art movement, Andy Warhol created prints that take an interesting and almost reverent look at everyday objects, transforming them with unconventional coloration. He duplicated images using a new technique he invented called blotted line. The process was tedious, and often included multiple apprentices. First he drew an image on waterproof paper with a pencil. Then it was traced with ink. The paper was then flipped and pressed on absorbent paper. The printed image was finally colored in using pastels. Today we set up an invitation to paint Warhols print of a banana which was a famous album cover. We placed Colorations® tempera Paint, paint brushes, construction paper form @DiscountSchoolSupply along with his art work and still life objects for the children to become inspired and create their own interpretations. By offering open-ended, meaningful resources to explore the child’s imagination is sparked and they can come to it with fresh eyes and new ideas! Being exposed to artists helps the children gain perspective that art is limitless. #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #everychildisanartist #processart #earlylearning101 #preschoolart #bestofalameda #discountschoolsupply #powerofplay #powerofplay52 #getcreativewith #invitationtocreate #colorations #letthempaint #invitationtopaint #childcareadventures #smockson #everychildisanartist #earlyed #earlyeducation #earlyeducationmatters #letsplayatoz_a #letsplayatoz_a

Invitation to Create a Self Portrait with Loose Parts//First we passed around mirrors for the children to look and observe their faces and open discussion about the similarities and differences they each have. We set the table with different shades and shapes of faces, flat marbles, yarn, wood cookies, buttons, translucent shapes, and more from @DiscountSchoolSupply. Loose parts are the perfect for limitless possibilities, foster problem solving skills, creativity, exposure to new materials, and decision making. What we love most about invitations is watching how the different combinations of materials inspire the children to create beauty. This type of play enhances a childs free creative play, exposure to sensory elements, requires concentration, fine motor, relaxing and stimulating. Through this inivitation children are really creating: using what they have and what they already know, and combining that to create a whole that’s greater than the parts. Loose parts and free play in childhood develops the creative genius of the future. Self portraits are actually a key part of learning and personal development. When they are creating a self portrait it allows the maximum amount of artistic freedom and is immensely introspective. The children learn who they are, how they want to present and themselves and what s important to them. #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #earlylearning101 #thekidsplay #bestofalameda #sensoryplay #smartlittlestars #tactileplay #ctinquiry #powerofplay52 #powerofplay #earlychildhoodeducation #earlylearning #getcreativewith #finemotorskills #childcareadventures #loosepartsplay

Sensory Walk// Sensory experiences are an important part of child development, but many sensory activities only utilize the hands. Our feet are just as sensitive as our hands and this activity allows children the experience of learning, exploring, and feeling with their feet. Bare feet are important to optimal nervous system and brain development. There are two other sensory systems that are rarely talked about — the proprioceptive system and the vestibular system. Proprioception gives us the ability to perceive the motion and position of our bodies in space, while the vestibular system is responsible for balance and coordination. The development of both of these senses relies heavily on sensory input we receive through bare feet, especially during infancy and childhood. When activated by pressure and movement, nerve endings in the feet called proprioceptors send signals to the brain telling it how the body is oriented. When a child is allowed to be barefoot, their tactile pathways feel the surface of the ground, proprioceptors respond to pressure, and the terrain creates slight imbalances that create neuromuscular strength, spacial orientation, balance, and coordination. To enhance the sensory experience through their feet we placed plastic tubs filled with water beads, colored water, shaving cream, tinsel, faux fur, corn and shaving cream. We went from dry to wet. We let them explore as they walked and all the while asking them questions. This is a great way to talk about textures and sensory attributes. #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #earlylearning101 #thekidsplay #bestofalameda #sensoryplay #smartlittlestars #tactileplay #ctinquiry #powerofplay52 #powerofplay #earlychildhoodeducation #earlylearning #getcreativewith #childcareadventures #infantplay #earlyed #earlyeducation #sensoryintegration #sensoryactivity

Invitation to Paint Self Portraits// We set the table with array of books that explore All About Me, Colorations® Colors Like Me tempera paint, paint brushes, and construction paper from @DiscountSchoolSupply. A self portrait gives children the time to study their eyes, nose, mouth and the rest of their face and body, and to work out how it all fits together. Creating a self portrait allows the maximum amount of artistic freedom. It’s them, so they can create it anyway they want. The simplicity of a self portrait means that children can experiment with whatever materials they like to create their portrait, and try any style they wish. Self portraits are the most introspective of art forms. By creating a self portrait, children learn who they are, how they want to present themselves and what’s important to them. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, painting a self portrait is creative! Children will learn that doing art is, at its best is all about being free and creative. We also can’t wait to see how these evolve throughout the rest of the year! #preschool #ilovealameda #alamedaca #everychildisanartist #processart #earlylearning101 #preschoolart #bestofalameda #discountschoolsupply #powerofplay #powerofplay52 #getcreativewith #invitationtocreate #colorations #letthempaint #invitationtopaint #childcareadventures #smockson #everychildisanartist #letsplayatoz_a #letsplayatoz_a #ctinquiry #intentionalteaching
