We all know modern culture and lifestyle often mean that many of us sit, sometimes almost all day which can cause Sleepy Glutes as well as other postural adaptations and weaknesses. . . The Gluteus Medius is a highly functional muscle that is on the lateral side of the hip. It abducts and well as medially rotates your hip (as seen in these exercises). . . Besides leveling your hips, the gluteus medius has an important job in biomechanics, stability, and balance. . . When you walk and run it aids in stabilizing your pelvis, in particular when you perform activities where you balance on a single leg. If the Gluteus Medius is weak, it can cause the hip that is not part of the standing leg to drop, and this can cause an abnormal gait and other issues. Also imagine running and exercising over and over with a weakness in your Glute Medius causing poor alignment and low back pain and/or knee pain. . . So, it’s important to work on exercises specifically designed to keep the gluteus medius strong and healthy. . . This Pilates side lying series I’m using an ankle weight (5lbs). Make sure you can control ROM with bodyweight before adding an external weight. Remember, isolating this muscle means controlling your body in an exercise. . . Got my workout for the day done and over. Now I’m enjoying my protein shake with some added chia seeds and muesli for digestion. 🎶 I believe I can fly 🎶 . . . Most people think yoga is all “just” stretching and breathing. Yes it’s that too, but it’s also a way to build strength. Through practice the body adapts to your requests to do new asanas. The strength and coordination comes from a connection deeper than just muscle. Part of the mindfulness in your practice is your ability to connect and engage your mind and body. I used to lifts weights heavier than my entire body but still couldn’t lift or maneuver my body like I can now. I was uncoordinated beyond the basic movements that were in my training program. Then I switch to a more complex and dynamic program of yoga and feel stronger than ever. I chose this #armbalance because the stronger I get the higher and longer I can fly right here. (Flexibility also helps too 😉) . Tomorrow’s pose for #namasleightheholiday is any pose you feel strong in HOWEVER I had my lineup posted in a different order (edited it now). So some of you might be sharing your determined yoga pose. If you do that’s ok. . I’m not really sure what you might call this, but I recently started playing around with it. I always find it a bit of a challenge to make progress around this time of the year with finals and the back to back holidays. With that said, picking and choosing the battles are a key to maintaining and making progress with exercise and health. One of the things I hear a lot around this time of year is “you can skip the gym today” or “you can have one cheat meal”. When it comes to it, moderation is key. Workout when you can, eat healthy when you can, but don’t let it control you to the point of where you can’t enjoy yourself, and also don’t give into every urge. I struggle with this at times, as I defiantly try to stray away from taking off days as much as possible, but if you can enjoy yourself while also working towards those goals you have, you’ll probably be better off for it. What works for you around this time of the year?
