I follow a lot of people who have lost weight using a variety of methods. For some people, WLS was the right choice. Finally have an appetite after about 5 days of having food poisoning! Decided to enjoy some epic Nutella stuffed French toast from @syrupcitypark It was everything I hoped for. Not pictured, a big ass plate of egg whites since my protein intake over the past 5 days has been almost non-existent. Today’s lesson with food-you might ask yourself or hear people often say “OMG your eating that, it’s so unhealthy...” 🤦🏼‍♂️ The word healthy and a healthy diet mean many different things to many different people. You can get fat eating keto, you can get fat eating paleo, you can get fat eating a high carb diet, but just like people who are overweight eating keto or low carb, or clean or whatever, it’s the fact that they are eating too many calories, not the composition of their diet. I always have and always will advocate for an 80/20 approach to your diet. 80% should come from whole, nutrient dense, minimally processed foods and the 20% well, enjoy drinks with your friends and some pizza afterwards, have some French toast with the nectar of the gods AKA Nutella, or enjoy a burger and fries. Monitor your food intake just like you monitor your bank account. Everything will be just fine. Pay no mind to nutritional zealots who try and convince you of outlandish and frankly totally unsupported false claims regarding food. After all, it’s just food. The thing is though - when it comes to body composition, no matter what process you choose and how you execute it, any change which occurs is the result of science (thermodynamics). Whilst we cannot change the course of science, we can change our emotions to influence the scientific process. The feelings we get which result in turning to excess food for comfort can be eradicated by choice. We can literally choose to do this. We control our emotions, they do not control us. We need to be stronger. - - Take eating a cookie or a moderate amount of ice cream for example. In your head you might tell yourself that eating a cookie or ice cream is bad (but you love them). Now that you’re already bad, why not eat 4 cookies, or a whole tub of ice cream? The reality is though, that this particular cookie is 240 calories and this moderate amount of ice cream is 150. What does that mean for your fitness goal? You tell me. But I estimate that it could absolutely fit into your diet, regardless of your goal. - - Eating this cookie/ice cream is one tiny episode in your life. It’s a small part of your overall lifestyle which defines your goal. Your execution of energy balance, nutrients absorbed, bodily function is science. So is the effect of 240 calories or 960. 150 calories or 1000. You literally make these choices. Be objective. - - The principle of the paragraph above can be used for the asparagus too. Consuming a nutrient dense, healthy food will not automatically achieve your fitness goals alone. Don’t fall into a false sense of achievement - you merely ate a food here. What does the big picture look like? - - You can’t change science. But you can change irrational, useless emotions into informed executions of educated, rational choices that help you. Sunday Meal Prep for the week ahead - going to have a courgette, tuna and spinach wrap for dinner, Jumbo mushroom salad with cottage cheese for tea (plus a whole load of snacks!!!) and Ive chopped what seems like a ton of celery for my 3 mini houmous pots throughout the week. I have a watermelon to dissect tomorrow, but I also roasted courgette for the wrap and made sweet potato crisps with the skin on as a snack for tomorrow too. Day 193 Sunday Dinner - Carbs + carbs + carbs + an egg 🍳. This is one of my favourite comfort food dinners and it’s even better when I’ve had nothing to do with the cooking. Gammon steak, egg, chips and baked beans. I could of made it lower in calories by having less chips and beans but if it fits in my macros why would I? I’ve now switched up my macros to increase the carbs because I was fed up myfitnesspal telling me I’d gone over my carbs all day every day. My calories are still the same, it just means my macros are more balanced now. If I want to increase my running I know I can’t do it on a low carb diet - I will be a zombie and I love chips. You’re gonna get one eventually and it’s gonna be annoying. - Now, sometimes you just need some patience because the scale fluctuating, or sticking for 4-5 days, isn’t a plateau — it’s normal. - For everyone looking to lose weight. If you weighed yourself daily while gaining weight or maintaining your weight, this would be the norm too. - But let’s say it’s been a few weeks and your weight hasn’t done anything. Your plan was working before but it’s stopped. - Supplements? Extra workouts? Cardio? - Now, some extra movement could be in the cards. Maybe even tracking your steps/activity because if you haven’t, you’ve probably slowed down subconsciously as you’ve lost weight. Thanks to @jameskrieger for shedding light on this stuff for me. His research review is outstanding. - Instead of all that, and as James suggests, take a close look at adherence. Like take a really honest look for the next week to whether you’re actually following your plan that was working as closely as you think. - It may sound silly, but I bet you find your answer. It gets harder as you lose weight. And if that’s not it, consider monitoring your activity to keep steps, or add a few cardio sessions in. Consider lowering calories by 100-200. - But don’t chase some plateau busting meal, food, program, or supplement. That is NOT it. - And just remember, maintaining weight loss is still progress.
