If youre like me, you add salt to everything!🧂 . ...Well almost everything! 😉 It makes your food taste better. 😁 . 🤔 Some may be thinking well isn’t salt (sodium) bad for me? . Too much of anything is bad for you; however, salt is very important for our health. . Our body needs Sodium to: . ✅ Support proper movement of our muscles. ✅ Maintaining our body’s fluid balance. ✅ Preventing dehydration. ✅ Sending signals to our nervous system. . 🧐 Now the next questions is: But there are so many types… Is one better than the others? . Table salt is the most common, but switched to using Pink Himalayan Salt. . If you have been following me for a while, you know that I leave no stone unturned when it comes to what goes into my body. And this includes salt! 😁 . 👇🏻Here is a Quick Comparison of Table Salt and Pink Himalayan Salt: . Table Salt: . ✖️Heavily Processed & Refined: Many of the important trace minerals are removed in the refining process. ✖️Harmful Chemicals Added: Ground salt easily clumps together. So, in order to prevent the salt from clumping, a harmful anti-clumping agent is used. ✖️Sometimes Spiked with Iodine, a nutrient that our bodies need for proper thyroid function, but usually don’t get enough of. While this seems like a good thing, there are more natural sources of iodine in vegetables, eggs, and seafood that are better for you. . Pink Himalayan Salt: . ✔️Minimally Processed: One of the purest forms of salt with no additives. ✔️Contains Trace Minerals: Your body needs these minerals - although quantities are small pink salt contains Calcium, Potassium, Magnesium, Iron, and Sodium of course. 😊 ✔️Naturally Contains Iodine: Although it has small amounts, you can obtain more iodine in your diet through natural food sources mentioned above. . 📌 Bottom line is that the nutritional value is slightly different, but the real reason to use Pink Himalayan Salt is that there are no chemicals added to create the finished product. 👌🏻 . When I was over weight, I rarely felt beautiful, sexy, or really worthy of attention in any way. I was objectified by my body type, stereotypically assumed and felt as though I was not allowed to feel beautiful, as though it was shameful and pointless of me to even try. Having tried to lose weight countless times as a child and teen, I decided that if I wanted to be successful this time, something would have to change - I needed to do it out of genuine love for myself, not because I hated my body and would only feel worthy if I changed it. This first photo shoot marked that vow that I made to myself. I was so uncomfortable in front of that camera, even though it was just my sister taking the photos. But I can honestly say that the moment I saw those photos was the most beautiful I had ever felt up to that point in my life. I saw a lot more than my body in them. I saw a promise that I knew I would keep, and it was just the most empowering feeling. Flash forward about a year and a half- I decided to do an updated shoot. I was down 115 pounds, stretch marks faded, hair thinning, body deflated leaving behind quite a bit of excess skin, but nevertheless, seeing the photos from this shoot brought back that same feeling as the first, except it was also the moment I realized that I had kept that vow I had made. I am starting to hate the word detox. Mostly because that seems to mean unsafe products that are laxatives. 🙈 But. After a whole month of holidays and then another week of sun, booze, and food, I can tell you: my body’s check engine light is ON. 🚨 My skin is angry, my body is puffy, and I feel like junk (not to mention my liver, which is fairly crying out for mercy). That is not our normal state. That is not your body at balance. 🆘 So no. Detox is not a thing. But it IS necessary to restore balance by STOPPING piling in bad things, and being INTENTIONAL about adding good. I 💯 get it if you think nutrition doesn’t matter. Five years ago I was convinced that: ✅ We got all the nutrition we need from whole foods and that any kind of supplement was a scam ✅ We didn’t have any food intolerances ✅ My weight was the best indicator of my health ✅ Choosing to eat differently was impossible, especially with a family ✅ We couldn’t afford to do anything differently Well guess what? My own body didn’t agree with my stubbornness 🤦🏻‍♀️, (and neither did emerging research). It is reallly annoying when your own experience proves you wrong 😬 (#darnit). I was forced to be open to new ideas and education. 🤯 Maybe that’s you, maybe that’s not you. 🤷🏻‍♀️ But if your body is hollering at you that it is maintenance time, maybe it is time to do something new. 🤔 Let’s tackle 2019 together. 💪🏼

Happy Humpday! We made it halfway through the week, so close to the weekend which happens to be my birthday weekend.🥳 The good ole 2️⃣5️⃣ came up quickly, let the quarter life crisis begin.🤪 Did I mention a blizzard is coming? Made with @ancientharvest quinoa, these tasty little bars are packed with top quality nutrient dense ingredients. Best of all, they are gluten free and dairy free so everyone can enjoy as a snack, breakfast, even a dessert. Recipe details 👇👇👇 * * * INGREDIENTS (makes 9 bars): 1. 1.5C old fashioned oats 2. 1C cooked @ancientharvest quinoa 3. 2 bananas (1 smashed, 1 sliced) 4. 1 large egg 5. 1/2C almond milk 6. 1/2C peanut butter 7. 1/2tsp vanilla extract 8. 1/2tsp baking soda 9. 1/8tsp salt 10. 1tsp cinnamon 11. 1/3C dark chocolate chips 12. 1/2tsp coconut oil * * * DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350F. 2. In a large mixing bowl, combine oats, quinoa, salt, cinnamon, & baking soda. 3. In a smaller bowl, mix the smashed banana with the egg, almond milk, & vanilla extract. 4. Add the wet to the dry, then add PB and mix well. 5. Transfer to a 9x9 baking dish lined with parchment paper. Top with sliced banana. Cook at 350F for 20-25 min, until cooked through. 6. Once the bars have cooled, melt the chocolate and coconut oil in the microwave (stir to mix until smooth). Weird combo i know, BUT i have some #foodforthought this morning and would love for you all to take a read below. . One thing I really struggle with is finding purpose in still moments. This past winter break i had a lot of those and I start to felt very guilty about not being on the go-go or that I should be doing MORE. Because for me, a busier schedule = purpose. I’m needed here or there. I need to get X done to get the grade I desire (because I have found a lot of worth in grades). Even mundane tasks like grocery shopping, laundry, running errands, replying to emails—they ALL have a significant purpose. . Yesterday i was full blown go-go-go ALL day and when i woke up today, I’m feeling it. My body has no energy, my gut is being a spas—all signs that I need to slow the hell down today. Thoughts like “there’s no purpose here, you’re just being lazy,” began to fill my mind. But then I took a step back. No. There is much purpose in this still moment, it is for healing. Each still moment has purpose just like every busy moment. The difference is, are we willing to listen? #runningcarroteats

Healthy eating means eating a variety of foods that give YOU the nutrients YOU need to maintain YOUR health, feel good, and have energy. These nutrients include protein, carbohydrates, fat, water, vitamins, and minerals. Nutrition is important for everyone. Eating a healthy, balanced diet plays an essential role in maintaining a healthy weight, which is an important part of overall good health. Being overweight or obese can lead to health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, heart disease and stroke. Being underweight could also affect your health. I understand that everyone has different goals, but we can all do a better job with supplying our bodies with what it needs based on our individual goals! Remember in general if someone wants to lose 20 pounds of body fat they may be on a completely different plan than someone that needs to lean down or cut body fat for a bodybuilding show, sports competition etc, but there is one thing that we all share in common, YOU WILL BE WHAT YOU EAT!! Whoever thought I’d be head over heels for green juice? 🥤getting a juicer was 💯 a great idea. I was a little bit nervous I wasn’t gonna get my bang for my buck as I thought it’d be one of those things I use once and then it’d just sit in my kitchen for the remainder of the year (like my rice cooker) but I use this lil bad boy once or twice a week to use up my fruits and veggies. After watching @samozkural YouTube videos i was inspired to buy a juicer and kick off a green juice challenge for AT LEAST 30 days. But I think I’ll do it longer, cus why not? Green juice is SO SO SO good for you, and yum! • A few of you have been asking what’s in my green juice, so here it is. Here are a few tips to mix things up, especially when your groceries are coming to an end!! . . 🌿Balance Balance Balance! All you need to start with is balancing salty, sweet, and acidic! These 3 will make a world of difference. [Adding more complex flavours takes things even further but all you really need is these] . . 🌿Know your acids. A squirt of citrus on a nice fatty piece of fish brings it to life. A splash of white vinegar in very sweet desserts keeps your palate wanting more! . . . 🌿It can be hard to be creative after a long day so work with what you have and keep things simple. Onions, garlic, and herbs are almost always in stock at my place. Starting with this base can take you so many different places regardless of what other foods you have. . . . 🌿Spices & herbs! Slowly start to add different spices to your kitchen. The beauty of dried herbs and spices is the incredibly long shelf life! This helps mixing things up easily, instead of always only using the standard salt and pepper. Buon appetito!

Binge Eating. Let’s talk about it. Bingeing consumed me for years. It was my coping mechanism, and in many ways, it was my relief. I relied on it for so long that it soon became my crutch any time that I felt weak. I still vividly remember those nights where I would sneak down into my basement after everyone went to bed. I’d scrounge through the fridge, freezer, and then pantry. At this point of the night I’d be starving because I barley ate through out the day. And then I would sit, sit and gorge myself past satiety, until I only felt physical and mental pain. Then I’d sit there longer and get angry at myself for doing it again. The anger and resentment I had for myself and my body was sickening. Afterward, I would go to the bathroom and you could guess what I did there. Sadly, this defined my relationship with food for years: an intermixing of fear, hatred, and obsession...all in secret. It took me years to come to peace with food as well as my body. It is a struggle that I am overcoming even today, as I learn to accept and love my body for what it is. I am fortunate to say that it has been 4 years since I stopped bingeing and I never felt happier. Sure, there have been times where I wanted to bite the bullet, and run to a bathroom; a temporary fix for some mental pain. Yet each time I have stopped and realized that I am so much stronger than that. Sitting here I am so proud of myself because it is freaking hard work to get to a better mental place, let alone stay there indefinitely. But hey, I never thought I would be at place where a bagel or pasta didn’t scare the shit out of me. I also never thought I’d love my curves. But trust me, it is possible. 📷- @lauren_kelly13

Most of you probably recognize the kale but at the far left is Swiss chard. One of the many benefits of Swiss Chard is its high amount of Vitamin K. Studies have shown vitamin K helps regulate calcium levels ultimately improving bone mineral density. So ladies if your mom, grandma, any family member has osteopenia then do your body a favor and give it some greens! Quick ONE-POT, Keto, Whole30 dinner coming atcha 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 |DIRTY CHICKEN FAJITA & RICE SKILLET| . How I did this: 👇🏻 ➡️In a large, deep cast iron skillet or non stick pan, sauté over med heat 1 lb of sliced/diced bell peppers (about 3 - I use a mix of colors. The red, yellow, and orange ones are sweeter!) and 1 sliced/diced onion with 2 tbsp of avocado/coconut oil. ➡️Cook those for 10-15 minutes until softened slightly. ➡️Push the peppers and onions to the edges, turn the heat up to med high and make room in the center for 1 lb of boneless, skinless chicken thighs (you could use chicken breasts too!). ➡️Season each side of the chicken with about 1/4 tsp of each: garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, oregano, chili powder and cumin. Then a little s+p. (2 tbsp of taco seasoning works too! @primalpalate makes a great one!) ➡️Place each chicken thigh in the center, try to make sure they’re not touching each other too much. ➡️Cook for 3 1/2 minutes on the first side, flip and cook for 3-5 more minutes - depending on size. ➡️Remove chicken (it’s ok if some are not all the way done at this point) and peppers/onions from skillet. Set aside. ➡️In the hot skillet, reduce heat to medium and add 20-24 oz of frozen cauliflower rice. ➡️Season rice with 1 t onion powder + 1 t garlic powder. ➡️Cook for 10-15 minutes until tender and slightly browned. I like to stir the rice a bunch in the first few minutes. Then spread it evenly throughout the skillet and let it cook for 5 minutes without stirring. I repeat this until it’s browned to my liking. ➡️While the rice is cooking, slice or chop the chicken thighs. ➡️Once the rice is cooked, add in the chicken thighs and peppers/onions. ➡️Cook for another 4-5 minutes until all of the chicken is cooked through and you’ve picked up all of that flavor from the bottom of the pan.
