Another short series of clips from an upper body workout this past Thursday afternoon. I began in recent traditional fashion with supersets of wide grip pull-ups and pushups to failure (shown in the first clip). I had also made the decision in this particular workout to begin incrementally loading my pull-ups, beginning with 5lbs and increasing by 5lbs or so when appropriate. I then followed this pairing with more seated dumbbell shoulder presses (shown in the second clip). Sadly, the set shown on video ended up being the lone set of shoulder presses on the day. Approaching the end of this first set I felt a familiar dull pop in the right side of my upper back, and immediately knew that I had strained my levator scapulae (something I have become more than acquainted with over the last several years). By the time I had put away these dumbbells and sat back down I was no longer able to turn or lean my head side to side with any comfort, so it was safe to say I was shutting it down for the day. Definitely disappointing to suffer a setback of this nature after quite some time without any, but not the end of the world, as the resulting muscle spasm did not have any perceivable effect on my spinal alignment. I’ve also jumped immediately into doing some focused soft tissue work and stretching in the 24+hrs following, which has made a noticeable improvement in pain and movement restriction already. Shoulders day For years I have steered away from direct front delt work as they get a lot of indirect work with heavy pressing and chest movements but Im starting to put an emphasis on them now. Still prioritising rear delt work first and foremost but then I alternate between hitting medial or anterior delts secondary. This is from Sundays shoulder session, hitting some time under tension dumbbell shoulder presses and dumbbell front raises. Some highlights from another upper body medley this past Friday evening. It’s looking like for the time being I might be interspersing my upper body workouts with slightly more frequency than my lower body work, at least until my body gets acclimated to the volume schemes that I’d like to use going forward. In other words, I did not feel physically ready to rotate back to another squat day following the work I had done on deadlifts on Monday, as would have been my original plan. So, in its place went an upper body workout. As done in last week’s workout, I began with supersets of wide grip pull-ups, and pushups to failure (shown in the first clip).
