@redthreaded #fallforcostume Day 18: Favorite Technique There are many, but I chose this. Tensioned boning on a flatlined bodice. It makes the seams so smooth! But swipe to see my true favorite. I use it for everything, all the time! It’s very secure and it stretches if you need to pull the seam. It’s just so unphotogenic and boring that I buried it under the shiny technique. I really do use it all the time as I hand sew most of my stuff. #sewing #dressmaking #historicalsewing #historicalcostuming #handsewn #handsewing

It’s nearly the end of 18th Century day. And I only have inspired 18th Century. Belle and Claire Fraser. I am going with Claire Fraser for today. I used @americanduchess patterns to make the stays, bumpad, and vest. Sorry for the grainy dusk photo. It’s one of my favorites but there was heavy snow falling. One of my absolute favourite images from our recent work - and the theme for today’s @redthreaded #fallforcostume challenge is ‘Favourite’. The photo was taken by @loven.n during the filming of @crowseyeproductions film on the Women’s Land Army uniform of WW2. I copied the breeches and dungarees from original pairs in the Museum of Lincolnshire Life costume collection. The blouse and shirt were made from vintage patterns. Today for #fallforcostume day 18 is #technique I made an armored Smaug cosplay a few years ago. I made it mostly out of worbla and it was my first time working with it. I really enjoyed the process of designing the armor, figuring out how it would all fit together and shaping the worbla itself. There is a lot I would change now but for a first go it worked well and I would like to make more armor with worbla in the future. #cosplay #costuming #thehobbit #smaug #armor #dragon #smaugcosplay

Day 18 of the Fall for Costume challenge. Todays theme is Favourite Technique. As Im trying to display variety in my posts and projects I have made over the years, Ive chosen beading/beadwork as a technique. My first image was taken by Hanson Leatherby #hansonleatherbyphotography a few years ago and featured in his Hollywood Portrait collection. Im wearing an early 20s beaded tabard dress that has a bit of an Egyptian Revival thing going on. It has cartouche style beaded details at the ends of the panels in peach and green. (seen separate image for close up) The dress was fairly damaged when I bought it on Brick Lane for £85 but I was happy to spend my free time over several months repairing and restoring it. I also used florist wire, beads and ceramic scarabs painted gold to make a headpiece to wear with it. I like to think this is an outfit Mame Dennis would have worn at one of her parties at Beakman Place in New York. #fallforcostume #fallforcostumeday18. #egyptianrevivaljewellery #egyptianrevivalfashion #1920sfashion #tabarddress

Day 18: favourite technique for #fallforcostume I chose this dress because my favourite technique is kind of sculpting with worbla, for those who dont know: worbla is a thermoplastic (so it gets soft and clay-like when its heated) which is often used in cosplay, generally to make armour (since its strong when cold), but also for detailing. In this costume, the armcuffs and the belt are made out of it. And for now, this is also my favourite dress. . The Thranduil crown in the lat photo was also made with this technique. . Photos were taken by @retro_fox That handsome looking male person is @larpvision The dress is sewn by Sofie . #fantasycouture #coupleshoot #knight #fashionphotography #handmade #worbla #gowns #thranduilcrown #historicallyinspired #fantasy #whiteandgold #sewingproject

Terror, Trauma, Tantrums: Reflections on Halloween Past and Present. For Heidi Klum, and many more people besides, Halloween is ‘the’ fancy dress event of the year. Since the 1950s, the opportunity to wear bold and brash, creative and creepy costumes on 31 October has inspired fun, provoked fear and caused the young and young-at-heart to get creative with cloth, PVC and the glue gun. Originating in the Celtic festival of Samhain, Halloween remains a liminal event today, and provides a rare moment for people to express more of their character. For this very special of dressing up days, and in response to listener feedback, Lucy and Ben open up about their own costume experiences and reflect on Halloween terrors and triumphs. From a lacklustre train driver’s suit to body gouging metal armour, personal memories are used to tell a global story about the enduring appeal of All Hallows’ Eve. @dressfancypodcast @benjamin__wild NEW EPISODE OUT TODAY. Todays #fallforcostume theme is 18th century which I love a lot from especially #marieantoinette stuff like this gorgeous pink dress worn in the movie #pink @redthreaded To really inspire me I adore the amazing dresses @virtuouscourtesan makes

Today’s @redthreaded #FallForCostume theme is 18th Century. 18th Century menswear is among the most ornate and best tailored in history. I especially love seeing these uncut embroidered waistcoat panels (last image)- they were very smart about saving wherever possible- engineered pattern designs, faux pockets, plain back waistcoats (sometimes made of simple muslin).

The only completed #18thcentury outfit I have for today’s #fallforcostume , a chemise a la reine I made for our Williamsburg trip in June 2016. I really want to like this era but between this and an anglaise I finished enough to wear but never finished finished... it doesn’t seem to be a very flattering era for me! At least, for women’s wear. 📷 by Mr. @ajmeows #williamsburg #18thcenturyfashion #chemisealareine #robeenchemise #anglaise #robealanglaise #historicalcostume #historicalcostuming

Most recent 18th century jacket, was test worn at Ft. Frederick market faire to shop for ribbons for the front that matched. From the wind that day I decided to add ruching to the entire hem and some fitting tweaks. The next time I get this photographed it should be finished with the matching silk petticoat and dyed shoes! #FallForCostume #historicalcostume

#fallforcostume Day 8: Last As in, last minute photo shoot. As in, I ran into @kl_photography_and_video while she was holding her camera and I was wearing my dress, so why wouldnt we run out back and take a few pictures before the sun set?

#fallforcostume Day 18: Favourite Technique One of my favourite techniques is #crochet #lace #cuffs. I love #bellsleeves and prefer full length sleeves to 3/4, generally, so I crocheted some cuffs in #ecru, which I also like working with. I use it for handstitching, too. :) #magicalaurieloveslace #magicalaurie #costumedesign #costumedesigner #upcycledclothing #upcycling #costumemaking

#fallforcostume day 17: 18th century . Two years ago @anachronisminaction and I went to a Marie Antoinette themed birthday party @barmarmont . We both decided to dress up as Ladies of the night for the evening. My outfit I put together was highly inspired by the Marie Antoinette movie. That movie is soooooo visually stunning and makes me drool with envy. The Rococo period in France, might be my favorite historical period purely based on how over the top everything was. Talk about being extra AF. I’m soooo happy that Hulu started making the show @harlotsonhulu . Talk about eye candy with costumes! October 17: 18th Century The lavishness and grandeur of the 18th-century, particularly Rococo, lifestyle still seduces people to this day. So today’s #fallforcostume theme is 18th century. Since you all have seen quite a bit of my Italian gown, I thought I’d share some late 1780s eye candy that’s been some inspiration for me lately. The @stlgeorgians will be going to the symphony in February and I’d like a new dress. Which one would you pick? I like them all! #18thcentury #sewing #inspiration #1780s

Today’s theme for #fallforcostume is “18th century,” and I think we have that covered! Here are some looks from some of our members! The second photo is of two of our members, Erin and Emily, the third photo is of two of our guests from Columbia who showed up to the tea, and the fourth photo is of the members from the Kansas City group who joined us for tea back in August! #18thcentury #redthreaded #sewing #handmade #friends #stlsgg #stlouisgeorgians #ensemblesofthepast

Day 17 of #fallforcostume is 18th century! One of my favorite eras of fashion. I love 17th and 18th century French fashion. I love how over the top and bright it was. My dream is to do a recreation of a Robe à la française. Which is more mid 18th century but is still 18th century. Overall one of my favorite time periods of fashion. #costume #costumer #costumedesigner #costumemaker #cosplayer #fashionhistory #costumehistory #18thcenturyfashion

Today’s @redthreaded #fallforcostume is 18th century. I’ve seen other photos from this event put on by @GBACG on here today so I’m going to bandwagon! This is my first foray into the 18th century and I made this JP Ryan jacket and self drafted petticoat out of scraps of Ikea Ljusöga duvets given to me by @freshfrippery and @frolicking_frocks, leftovers from their own ensembles. My chemise still needs button holes and I need to get some real boning in my panniers as well as a better corset, but all in all it was a success. Bonus 4th photo: I couldn’t make it to the @americanduchess book signing so my housemate, @portraitofaseamstress took my stomacher in for an autograph! #madebyme #historicalcostume #historicalfashion #casanovaexhibit #18thcentury #18thcenturyfashion #18thcenturydress #sewallthethings #justkeepsewing #historicalcostumer #costumer #seamstresslife

Day 17: 18th Century Since Im just starting my first 18th Century ensemble, the only thing I have to show are half of a pair of stays, unbound and not historically accurate (Im not using fancy fabric on a first attempt and since I still need to make the dress, Im not handsewing) but everyone needs to start somewhere! #FallforCostume #instagramchallenge #18thcenturystays #personalproject

Reposting in honor of today’s #fallforcostume theme and because this image never fails to make me smile ・・・ Found this picture recently amongst my childhood papers, and I immediately recognized the 18th Century styling- I must have seen paintings at the museum, or a movie on TV and tried to copy it! Day 14 of #fallforcostume is Hats and Hair. Ive gone with something vintage for this prompt, wearing a 40s style tilt hat that I made in my millinery class with pincurled hair. I love this hat so much, I think its the best hat Ive made! Millinery is a lot of fun and something Id like to try and do more of. I also need to get back into the habit of setting my hair again, as Ive been terribly lazy! 📷 by @trinny.t . #vintagehair #greenhair #millinery #vintagehat #pincurlset

#fallforcostume day 17: 18th Century 👒 I’ve dreamed about creating / wearing 18th costume for about 20 years, and now I’m finally feeling just about skilled and knowledgeable enough to attempt it. curfently I’m working on a reproduction of these stays from @vamuseum and it’s been fascinating! I can’t wait to create an ensemble to go with them, and finally live that fantasy ✨

The #fallforcostume challenge today is #18thcentury and I have to say that we’ve had our best shenanigans in that century! 🤣 #vauxlevicomte #18thcenturyfashion #embroidery #historicalcostume #timetravel #handsewn #handembroidery

#fallforcostume Day 17: 18th Century While in London I got to visit the Mews, where the Gold State Coach, built in the 18th century, is housed. The carriage itself is, naturally, quite the spectacle, but I love the detailing of livery and tack so I was happy to get pictures of that as well. Happy 18th century day for #fallforcostume! 18th century is my century so it’s hard for me to choose what to post, so here is the inspiration of the first thing I am going to make after the wedding, this in hunter green. I already have the wool!

#FallForCostume Day 17 #18thcentury These are just a ton of process shots of my current stays. Patterned by @modehistorique (and fabric from her fabulous stash). Had to stop when school year started and I became too exhausted. #18thcenturycostume #stays

I jumped into the #18thcentury a few months before our family was set to move to Kenya. I didnt have much time to make model dresses or find a location to shoot pictures, but it all came together when a friend of my husband offered to do the shoot and a neighbor loaned us her side garden...and then the weather gave us a perfect golden hour for the photos. Throw in a pair of sisters who modeled for me (and have been precious friends for over 17 years), and this launched my Ladies 1780s Portrait Dress pattern, the companion to the girls version I designed for my daughters. Happy memories! Next year I hope to revisit the 1780s with my eldest daughter in Vienna and Paris. ❤ #FallforCostume #historicalfashion #historicaldress #Georgian #Georgiandress #historicalcostume

#fallforcostume day 17: #18thcentury. The 18th century is where my love of fashion, art history and history in general began. It’s the time period I plan to focus on in my education. The idea of it saved me from myself in some ways. Finding my love of garments of this time is how I came to decide that art history is what I wanted to major in and is why I’m back in college. #arthistory #arthistorymajor #arteducation #college #historicaldress #historicalfashion

Day 17: 18th century. I really want an 18th century outfit. I have spent hours upon hours on 18th century sites, with their objects, in their trash pits and post holes, and reading about their patterns of behaviors. But Ive really had to search for clothing that speaks to me. I was perusing Pinterest trying to find out what my ancestors in Piemonte Italy might have worn in any time period (why is there no resources, if anyone knows anything, in more recent history they have been in areas near Torino), because everyone does Scottish stuff and English settlers and honestly I feel more Italian American than Scots Irish or German American, probably because my Nonni was herself an immigrant. Anyway, I finally found something. One water color that led me to an untitled book of water colors in a collection at a school in Japan. It seems to have originated from Turin ca. 1775. But thats the extent of the information about it. And only some of the people have places written in pencil under them. I want very much to think that my ancestors wore outfits like these. Especially because I looked down at myself that day and saw a floral shirt, plaid flannel, and butterfly print shoes, and I really felt like I belonged! #fallforcostume #allthepatterns #nothingreallyclashes #whatareTHEYwearingthisyear #everything #MYPEOPLE . . “An album containing 90 fine water color paintings of costumes.” Turin : [s.n.] , [ca.1775], in the collection of the Bunka Fashion College in Japan.

#fallforcostume #day17 is #18thcentury and I really can’t get enough of the #enfourreau back pleats so I put them on all my gowns, even this one which was supposed to be simple. This deep navy blue worsted wool was a dream to work with, too.

#fallforcostume day 18: favorite technique. Well my favorite technique is anything fast, easy, and cheap so have an Ellie made of things in my closet, thrift store finds, and a shirt. This cosplay group was definitely one of my favorites to be a part of too 💕 @mayaeffingfey as Tess #thelastofus

For today’s #fallforcostume 18th century theme, memories from a trip to Williamsburg. ... Williamsburg was my grade school field trip when I lived north of Florida, so it was a thrill to take my son. He begged to rent a costume and soaked up every experience from exciting reenactments to playing colonial games. Today he’s a history and costume lover at age ten. For my part, I spent a good chunk of every afternoon lurking at the Margaret Hunter shop. We hope to return to Williamsburg with our own 18th century costumes some day! ... @redthreaded #fallforcostume day 16: 18th century ... #colonialwilliamsburg #18thcentury #costume #reenactment #sewing #tailor #tailoring #margarethuntershop #hooprolling #governorspalacewilliamsburg #governorspalacegarden

#Fallforcostume day 17: 18th Century! The 18th century is one of my truest loves, but I believe I loved it even more when I decided to think outside of the box and design an oriental-inspired silk 1780’s European robe à la polonaise to wear hiking up the Great Wall of China during my visit in 2016! I posed for more selfies with selfie sticks than I care to count, got a lot of amazing pictures (see two above), and ended the day with everyone thinking I was pretty much a celebrity! And yes, I did actually hike to the top of the Great Wall in full dress complete with stay and period leather shoes! And would I do it again? #fallforcostume Day 18: #18thcentury This is my first attempt at an 18th century day dress, I’d guess you’d say. (Although, I think I look a bit hobbit-y) I love this picture and the close up that @shotwellcollection took of me at #costumecollege2018 Blue fabric from @colonialwmsburg and the yellow is a delicious cotton sateen. Vintage apron borrowed from @moyerdestroyer Coral necklace and earrings made by @rebecca.stagg Pattern by #jpryan I was very tired from jet lag this day so I just put some pink dye (it’s hard to see in my red hair womp womp) and a flower crown in my hair and called it a day. #fallforcostume Day 17: 18th Century I have yet to actually make anything from the 18th Century, but I do have most of the supplies for a Rococo twist on a modern character. Im definitely looking forward to making this cosplay happen eventually... Any guesses who it might be?

I’ve posted this pic a dozen times already but I don’t even care. Five francaises in a row! And honestly this photo describes our little group so well. Including @threadedthistle’s RBF 😂 we’re just missing @waxsealedcostumes. Love and miss you all! #fallforcostume

I present to you my 18th century ballgown for day 17 of @redthreaded #fallforcostume This dress was the first 18th century outfit that I made. I’ve always liked the panniers, hoop pocket, and bum pads that shape the skirts in this century. Some of my favorite characters and historical figures come from this period. Felicity is one of my favorite American Girl Dolls and I’ve always been drawn to Marie Antoinette (because we have the same name, and having the same name as a Queen is pretty cool) I’m planning on making a more historically based outlander costume inspired by Claire’s infamous red dress this spring and I’m excited to use the #americanduchess #18thcentury #dressmaking guide to help me. . . #historicalcostume #historical #historicalbelle #marieantoinette #historicalfashion #fashion #queenoffashion #historicalsewing #ballgown #sewing #faces_and_style #create #inspire #1700s #historicaldance #dance #traditionaldance #spin #princess #queen #livinghistory #historicalreenactment

#fallforcostumeday18: the #18thcentury! I have to confess I havent sewn anything remotely researched from before 1810 (costumes for plays and school presentations, yes, but they were... FUN... more than anything) but I did get the #AmericanDuchess Guide to 18th Century #Dressmaking as a graduation gift! Starting a project in that era is one of my goals for 2019, and I think I may begin with a cap - because why not?
