D R Y N E E D L I N G 🔹 What is dry needling? Dry needling is a technique used by health care practitioners to alleviate pain caused from trigger points. Trigger points are found in muscles and are usually painful with direct pressure. For example, if you run your fingers along your leg you may be able to feel tender or taut bands of muscle. Trigger points can develop gradually over time or after an acute injury. 🔹 How do we do it? Dry needling is done by inserting a thin needle (similar to an acupuncture needle) into the trigger points that we palpate in the muscle. This is not as painful as it sounds! You will often experience a muscle twitch and a ‘dull’ ache of the muscle. This is completely normal and actually the response that we are often looking for! 🔹 How does it work? Dry needling works by releasing trigger points, relieving muscle tension and improving the muscle function and range of motion. 🔹 How can it help me? One of the best things about the technique is that the benefits are often experienced almost immediately. Dry needling can be used as an individual treatment or in conjunction with other therapies. We have found common conditions such as plantar fasciitis, shin splints, knee pain and forefoot pain have benefited from dry needling. 🔹 Have a question about dry needling? Our Podiatrists Johan and Kirsty are both qualified in the use of dry needling and incorporate it into many of their treatment plans. We would be happy to answer any questions you may have about dry needling and discuss whether it is a suitable treatment option for you! 🔹 ☎️ 9221 8458 Or Book Online 💻 www.jspodiatry.com

Can Activity Modification help your #footpain? ⠀ https://buff.ly/2Ohi1f2⠀ Most foot problems are either caused by or aggravated by the repetitive loading that goes through the foot throughout the day. This force is proportional to:⠀ 1 - The number of steps taken (or time standing) and⠀ 2 - The force that goes through each step (which is determined by a persons weight and affected by their footwear, and walking surface).⠀ 3 - An individual’s foot posture (very high arch or very flat foot)⠀ Activity modification looks to decrease one or both of the above factors. Activity modification does NOT necessarily involve decreasing activity level.⠀ ⠀ read more: https://buff.ly/2xERtu1⠀ #footeducation #healthliteracymonth #activitymodification #weightloss #happyfeet #patienteducation #FootEducation #healtheducation #education #peerreviewed #beinformed #footandankle #orthopaedics #orthopedicsurgery #footfacts #anatomy #ankle #foot #healthyfeet
Did you know your foot has 26 bones, 20 muscles, 2 arches and 7200 nerve endings? The design of the human foot is pretty incredible being one of the only parts of the body where there are more bones than muscles (the ribs and spine are also similar in this way). When our feet are functioning effectively they allows us to bear the load of our body weight and shock absorb the impact through our knees, hips and spine. And it’s not only structurally that our feet shine. Bio-electrically our feet are our first contact point with our natural earth. They help us to discharge positive ions (that we absorb from using technology) from our bodies, reducing inflammation and stress on our systems. And those 7200 nerve endings? They ensure our feet are highly sensitive to our environment and help map the rest of our nervous system. This means stimulating those nerve endings (with spiky ball massage, @vibeplate vibration or balance challenges) can reflexively impact our postural muscles, improving posture and balance unconsciously (rather than worrying about constantly consciously adjusting). The moral of this story? Take good care of your feet, they are doing a lot more for you than you realise ... 📷incredible art by @tphamsterart

Fact or Myth: Your foot is not broken if you can walk on it. MYTH! Depending upon your pain threshold, and severity of damage, some can walk on a broken foot. The best thing to do if you are not sure on weather there has been a fracture, is to elevate your foot, rest and ice to help reduce the swelling. If pain and swelling persists, see your podiatrist right away to help prevent additional damage or improper growth of the bone as it heals. #footfacts #myths #brokenfoot #brokenankle #podiatrists #santarosacalifornia #sonomacounty

Here are my 3 top foot tips to look after your feet during SPRING! Spring is a transition period, coming from cold to warmth. So it is important we look after and transition our bodies accordingly. 🌱 Air your shoes and feet out! During Winter, we often have our feet cramped up in shoes and socks, which can harbour fungal spores and not allow our feet to breath. Before you pack your winter shoes away, air them out in some fresh air and sunlight and even give them a spray of an antibacterial spray 🍃 🌱 Tea tree oil! I just looooove tea tree. It is a natural antimicrobial, so it is perfect to put on your toenails for general nail health! It can help to prevent any fungal infection (and smells nice 👍🏼). Also avoid wearing nail polish. This can also promote fungal infections if left on for too long. 🌱 see a podiatrist! (Could you see this one coming?!) haha but I’m serious! What better time to see a FOOT EXPERT than during a change of season. It’s sandal season, so ladies, those nails will be on display! (Don’t just go to your pedi salon please!!!) We can get those heels looking fine! No more cracks and hard skin either! Sounds good I know 😉 So do yourself a favour, look after those feet! And we’ll help you get your feet ‘summer ready’ ☺️😉 Comment or DM me if you have any questions!! 👇🏼👇🏼

Fact or Myth? It is better to cut your toenails evenly along the entire nail. Answer: MYTH! It is actually best to cut your toenail straight across. This helps prevent the toenail from growing in and down into the skin of the toe causing an ingrown toenail. #themoreyouknow #funfacts #footfacts #feet #toenails #myth #podiatrist #doctor #santarosacalifornia
Even a cursory glance at the human heel bone will yield one obvious observation: there aren’t any flat bits. In fact, the part that touches the floor is smooth and round: not really the best design for something one stands on. 🤔 Whats going on here? Strictly speaking: heels are not for standing on. They aren’t stable, weight-bearing structures; when pressed against the ground, the heel should roll! ⛹️♀️ The direction that it rolls provides the nervous system with a data on what kind of surface we’re working with—and begins the process of charging up muscle tissue in the foot, ankle and lower leg with gravity’s acceleration. And getting gravity on your side is the quickest way to improve your footstrike. 👣 So? Dont just stand there — your heel bone is made to move! 💃 #heelbone #footfacts #kinesiology #movementmedicine #ebfa #barefootstrong #movesmarter #reembodymethod
Turf toe is a sprain to the ligaments around the big toe joint, which works primarily as a hinge to permit up and down motion. When you are walking or running you propel yourself forward by pushing off of your big toe and allowing your weight to shift to the other foot. If the toe for some reason stays flat on the ground and doesnt lift to push off, you run the risk of suddenly injuring the area around the joint. Turf Toe is not just a football injury, it is quite common in those that dance ballet, play soccer or basketball or perform gymnastics. #turftoe #footinjuries #toeinjuries #themoreyouknow #footfacts #podiatrist #doctor #sonomacounty #santarosacalifornia #football #basketball #dancer #ballet
