👣 I’ve been completely geeking out this week about FEET! Yes those poor extremities that we neglect daily are KEY to our future knee, hip and back health. . How I experience and treat my feet has been forever changed💡 Here are a few of my favourite facts from this week: 1️⃣ Your feet contain 25% of all the bones in your body - if these bones are out of alignment, so is the rest of your body. 2️⃣ Our feet are super adaptable and are designed to work brilliantly on uneven terrain - but are somewhat over-engineered for modern day living on mainly flat surfaces. 3️⃣ By encasing our feet in narrow, soft and supportive shoes we inevitability weaken them and inhibit their ability to communicate effectively with the brain. 25% of Americans have flat feet (no arches) which can knock the ankle, knee and hip out of alignment. I’m going without shoes and slippers as often as possible to help strengthen my feet. If my feet get cold, I will move them about! 4️⃣ Getting Tadasana (Mountain Pose) right at the beginning of your yoga practice is of paramount importance, as it forms the basis for all standing poses. The even distribution of weight and correct foot position in Mountain will set the right balance and alignment for the rest of the standing practice⛰ This would be true of any load bearing exercise - like a squat or kettle bell swing. Take a moment to get the right foot position, distribute the weight and lightly engage the core before you begin. . 📚 Credit to @akram_yoga @felix_yoga and @_laurayoga for their excellent teaching which I’ve summarised (massively) here. They are native to Central and South America and can be found all along the Pacific coast, stretching from Southern California down to Peru. This marine bird mainly resides in the open sea but depends on ocean islands for breeding. Approximately 70% of the total blue-footed booby population are found in the Galapagos Islands. ✅ Their diet consists of fish, mainly sardines, anchovies, and mackerel, which they catch through a spectacular dive into the water from the air. They are a social species and can often be found in flocks of up to 200 scouring the water for fish with their excellent binocular-style vision. ✅ The bluer the feet the more attractive a blue-footed booby is to a mate. Also, blue-footed boobies that were food-deprived for two days had a decrease in foot brightness so it’s true that foot color is a sign of health. ✅ Baby blue-footed boobies can look bigger than their parents because of their fluffy baby feathers and they’re not born with blue feet! With summer fast approaching your little ones will no doubt be looking forward to splashing around or better yet going on a summer holiday. It is this time of year I see an influx of plantar warts (warts that form on the soles of the feet) this is because warts are spread by a water bourne viral infection, often found around pool edges or spas. They are also picked up in communal bathrooms, especially at caravan parks, where there is a lot of foot traffic and less regular bathroom sanitisation. The best advice to prevent your child or you from contracting plantar warts is to wear thongs at ALL times in showers when on holidays and around pool edges. If you do see an unusual lesion on your foot have it looked at by your podiatrist.
