A client of mine in her 40’s started working out with me about 1 year ago. She lost 30 lbs. prior to joining my gym and wants to continue with her healhty lifestyle and weight loss journey. She isn’t losing weight like she thought she would so she has been asking me about her weight training routine. She is a soccer player and has never performed any weight training. She has now lost a total of 35 lbs. and feels she isn’t losing weight fast enough. I am a VERY BIG advocate in the benefits of weight training. I teach my clients about correct weight training including sets, reps and when to increase the amount of weight they lift. She told me about the information a weight watchers speaker gave her and should she be lifting weights because she isn’t losing weight and won’t reach her weight loss goal if she bulks up (ugh). I did her body fat and she is about +/-24% (using skin fold measurements). I realize with social media and the internet there is an abundance of information available to people. I graduated from Oakland University with a major in Exercise Science and Nutrition, and sometimes I have to explain that a google search or the family member who is regurgitating information may or may not be exactly accurate. There is a science behind weight loss and exercise. But there is not a one size fits all approach to either. I try to explain to my clients that between my education, 35 years in the field and multiple certifications I might know a little something about FITNESS and WEIGHT LOSS. It takes time to make any change in your body, and I understand everyone would like the change by yesterday. Be patient and don’t rush it, your body will change when you do the right things.
