Giant Anteater with a wet nose. Watching the anteaters and capybaras was magical. Close enough to hear them breathing & the capybaras whistling and squeaking. They look like imagination brought to life- we were mesmerized. I’m generally not a zoo person, but the new exhibits were just so well done- we had a fantastic day. #anteater #zoo #pittsburgh #zooanimals #giantanteater #magicalcreatures #pittsburghzoo #zoofun #fantasticbeasts

Photo by @joelsartore | Did you know that giant anteaters have a sense of smell that is 40 times better than a humans? This heightened sense allows them to sniff out ants or termites up to several miles away. This is a helpful feature for this ant-hungry species, who consume up to 30,000 of the insects a day! Amazingly, their tongue is usually two feet long, the largest in relation to body size of any mammal, with small backward-pointing spines covered in sticky saliva that aid in feeding. Sadly, giant anteaters like this one at the @sunsetzoomhk have experienced a population decline of around 30% over the past decade and are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Habitat loss, roadkills, hunting, and wildfires have been substantially impacting the populations over the past 10 years. In some areas, giant anteaters are hunted for food; this is especially true in the Caatinga area of Brazil. Their skin is often used to manufacture harnesses and other leather products, as well as for medicinal use. In Central America and southern parts of its range, there have been many records of local population extinctions. #PhotoArk #vulnerablespecies #giantanteater For more like this follow @joelsartore!

#DailyWildlifePick 👉🏽 Giant Anteater 📸: @ben.cranke 🐍South America Week🐍 • Ranging from Central America to South America, this strange, long-nosed animal is a confusing sight to see. It uses its tube-like snout to, of course, eat ants and other insects like termites. #giantanteater #cabildo #recoveredmemories #exhibit In July 1776, Charles III of Spain was given a giant anteater in appreciation of Spanish support of the American Revolution. The court artist was given the commish to paint it and he was like, Imma pass. Too weird. Now, some people think young apprentice Goya on staff, painted this portrait. Could be. Sadly, the anteater was fed mincemeat in lieu of ants and perished shortly afterwards.

I bet if I told you to name an threatened species the giant ant eater wouldn’t be your first suggestion, however these funky fellas are actually the most threatened mammal in Central America🐜 Giant ant eaters are one of my favourite animals as they have such charisma despite being bizarre looking! This little cutie is the 19th successful birth of a giant anteater at the @nashvillezoo!! They are currently doing some pretty cool studies involving their sense of smell and eating habits. These little guys cant see very well but their sense of smell is about 40 times stronger than that of a human. #nashvillezooatgrassmere #nashvillezoo #giantanteater #cute

Weekend isn’t over yet - I think I can still fit in a nap👍 #AnimalFact: Many species will use their their tail to cover their face in an effort to protect themselves from the elements. Or the sun if it’s nap time. . . . . . #GiantAnteater #Naptime #cuddleup #sundayfunday #weekendvibes #ReidParkZoo #Tucson

So I have always stayed away from zoos for the most part because I feel like the animals always look sad. I participated in a backstage tour today @nashvillezoo and really gained a great understanding of the zoos contribution to conservation. The animals all seemed very happy and we got to see some of the hard work that goes in to caring for these precious animals. They truly eat better than most humans lol. I want to share all of the wonderfulness I experieced today so this will be the first of many posts lol. This was the second stop on the tour where we got to see giant anteaters, including two babies!! One was nursing, which is something rare to see because the momma anteater usually covers the little one with her tail while it nurses. Too bad this baby was the size of its mom and couldnt be covered lol!! The other momma was giving her baby kisses the whole time! Just super sweet animals! The highlight of the visit was getting to feed Tiana. Notice from the photo,, they have super long tongues!! #nashvillezoo #nashvillezooatgrassmere #giantanteater #iloveanimals
