Fried artichokes da ROMA cause how could we not? Does having my own lil’ colander negate the calories of this Jewish specialty? TY @mika_roma of Jewish ROMA for the top notch tour of the Jewish ghetto here ❤️ . . . . #jewishroma #micaelapovincello #friedartichokes #traveltoeat #kosher #kosherlikeme #carcioffi
In Rome’s now trendy district of Trastevere, lies the former Jewish Ghetto. Before the forced deportations of October 16, 1943, the Jews of Rome enjoyed a near peaceful coexistence for over 2000 years. Of the thousands deported to Auschwitz, only 16 returned. Upon finding his father was a Nazi sympathizer, one man made it his mission to honor the lives of Jews across Europe, by inscribing brass “stumbling stones” with their names, and embedding them before the thresholds of their former residences. This neighborhood remains the center of Jewish life and culture in Rome. Reminders are present everywhere, from wooden doors bludgeoned with the butt of Nazi rifles, to the fountain adorned with turtles—Bernini’s suggestion, to acknowledge the Jews, as like the turtle, they traversed earth carrying their homes on their backs. #neverforget #jewishhistory #jewishroma #jewishghetto #mothersonadventures #rome @yummygoodbacon
They say the first Romans were the Jews. They have their own Ghetto since the first century since the conquest of Jerusalem 70AD. We ate at this Italian kosher restaurant whose insides are totally authentic. We walked by ancient ruins to get here. #JewishRoma #kosher #neighborhoodsofrome #juliannora #vmtravel #zanesnextadventure
