“Wildlife Biologists, Ecologist,a birder with few peers, Allen had a remarkable insight into the workings of nature. Intelligent and innovative, he took a practical approach to problem solving” This Park is named after Allen David Broussard, an ecologist who loved the ecosystems of Central Florida. After his death in 1990, his family, with @nature_org , bought the first acres that would become the core of this park. This monument sits atop one of the highest ridges in the park and overlooks the sandhills and scrub of the Lake Wales Ridge. @natureflorida #allendavidbroussard #catfishcreek #flstateparks #keepflwild #roamflorida #lakewalesridge

Spent my weekend hiking/ camping with @thekrusemissile through the ancient dunes found on the Lake Wales Ridge. 2 million years ago, what is now the Lakes Wales Ridge was a series of islands in a swallow sea. The plants and animals that found their way to those islands became distinct species that still survive in the desert-like Florida Scrub. This particular park has some of the highest and oldest ridges found on the Lake Wales Ridge. #catfishcreek #floridascrub #flstateparks #lakewalesridge #keepflwild #roamflorida

What is a donkey doing on a cattle ranch?! That was my first question as this burro came barreling toward me on Wednesday morning. The answer was surprising - The donkey was serving as the first line of defense against human wildlife conflict. The Big Cypress Reservation borders the vast protected areas of the Greater Everglades and predators are dense here as a result. This comes at a cost during calving season as bears, coyotes and even panthers target an easy meal. Though funny at the moment, this territorial donkey was actually doing his job by chasing me up the cowpens. The verdicts still out but donkeys might just turn out to be the unlikely conservation hero of the Everglades working lands... In the meantime, I think it’s safe to say they’ll be bringing a few laughs to cattle work #pathofthepanther . . . . . . #florida #cowboy #ranch #cattle #predator #bigcats #keepflwild #conservation #nature #environment #everglades #floridapanthers #evergladescowboys

IT IS AN HONOR TO HONOR OUR KEEPERS: Meet Tabbitha Cuellar @tabbcuellar. • If her name sounds familiar its because she basically doubles as our second social media manager, contributing to posts on a weekly basis. She also makes amazing enrichment (swipe left) for the animals! • I have a Bachelors in Biology and minor in Chemistry from Valdosta State University. I am an upstate NY native who moved South to pursue school and have been a keeper at the Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society for close to 2 years. • I have been a keeper for 5 years and have a widespread background. I love training and enrichment, my favorite thing to do is probably holiday and Birthday enrichment for our animals! • I love taking pictures and sharing fun and educational facts along with them. Not only do the animals at work get enrichment and training but work often follows me home for my 3 dogs to enjoy. • She is also the Social Media chair for @aazkofthepalmbeaches and we wish her and the team a happy National Zookeeper Week #NZKW2018!

Regrann from @browardchapterfnps - #ThrowbackThursday! Here is another shot from the trip with Broward and Miami Dade Chapters trip to Nixon Smiley Pineland Preserve in Miami from October 2017. “Description: Pine rockland is characterized by an open canopy of South Florida slash pine (Pinus elliottii var. densa) with a patchy understory of tropical and temperate shrubs and palms and a rich herbaceous layer of mostly perennial species including numerous species endemic to South Florida. Outcrops of weathered oolitic limestone, known locally as pinnacle rock, are common, and solution holes may be present.” Florida Natural Areas Inventory - Guide to the Natural Communities of Florida: 2010 Edition #tbt #flnativeplants #browardfnps #fnpsfieldtrip #keepflwild #miami #miamidadecounty #miamiparks

Key deer are the tiniest of all North American deer, and they love mangrove roots! The deer on the left wasn’t the best at hunting … her buddy would discover the goods and she would swipe in for her share. Primitive camping this trip helped us experience so much more wildlife behavior 😍

We missed this past Monday’s #worldsnakeday but that doesn’t mean we can’t still revel in reptiles every day! 🐍Recently we spotted this water moccasin a.k.a. cottonmouth (Agkistrodon piscivorus) on the driveway behind the Center. Water moccasins are a semi-aquatic species and eat a varied diet of amphibians, lizards, smaller snakes and mammals, and especially fish which their Latin species name suggests with “piscivorus” meaning fish-eater. Typically this species inhabits areas surrounding freshwater like cypress swamps but they can also tolerate brackish environments like our estuarine mangrove forests. Regular summer rains at the Preserve form temporary freshwater pools that many species take advantage of for feeding or breeding and this water moccasin we spotted may have been traveling over land to such a pool. Although water moccasins are a venomous snake species, that doesn’t inherently make them aggressive or a threat to visitors! Like with all wild animals, observe and appreciate it from a distance so it can continue to play its important role in our ecosystems. . . . . . #agkistrodonpiscivorus #watermoccasins #cottonmouth #snakes #snakesofinstagram #reptiles #floridawildlife #keepflwild #floridawild #lovefl #weedonisland #weedonislandpreserve #stpete

Like many specialized butterfly species, the fate of the Atala butterfly, Eumaeus atala, is tied to that of its host plant, Coontie, Zamia integrifolia. In the 1960s, the Atala butterfly was thought to be extinct following massive industrial-scale harvesting of Coontie in the region. The Atala butterfly was later rediscovered in 1979. However still rare, the Atala butterfly population has made a comeback with the cultivation of Coontie and its use as a popular landscape plant in South Florida. Coontie, the only cycad native to Florida, is a handsome addition to any landscape. If you would like to attract the Atala butterfly to your garden, a handful of plants are needed to support them. Visit www.fnps.org/plants and search Coontie to learn more about this plant! If you’re in Broward County, look for Coontie at Ann Kolb Nature Center and keep your eyes peeled for the Atala butterfly! #flnativeplants #browardfnps #browardnaturecenter #keepflwild #plantnative #createhabitat #coontie #zamiaintegrifolia #zamiaceae #atala #eumaeusatala #butterfly

Don’t run away, it’s #worldsnakeday! Eastern cottonmouths are likely the most feared snake in the southeast, but also one of the most photogenic! These fish eaters have a horrible reputation of going after anything that moves, which simply isn’t true. They are an assertive snake, often standing their ground with this head-up posture or wide-open mouth to stave off potential threats, but when push comes to shove, they will turn tail and slither away from a confrontation. Show some love to our slithery friends today 🐍 💕

Our members benefit from hearing presentations on a variety topics by featured speakers throughout the year at our monthly meetings. Often these relate to that month’s field trip, providing a deeper level of knowledge about the native plants or habitats they will see. This past February, Linda Briggs-Thompson, Environmental Program Manager with Broward County Parks, gave a presentation on the history and status of Broward’s Natural Areas. She also led that month’s field trip to Crystal Lake Sand Pine Scrub Natural Area with her team that directly manage the site and perform invasive plant removal. They provided insight to our members about the importance of land management of rare scrub habitat. #flnativeplants #browardfnps #fnpsfieldtrip #keepflwild #pompanobeach #browardcounty
