As a photographer one of the things I’m most appreciative of is the power of zoom. It allowed me to capture this photo which makes it look like I’m pretty close to the spider. This thing was probably the size of my hand. He didn’t move when I went to take the photos either, thankfully cause I knew I would have freaked out! I’m not sure what type of spider this is but if you know, please drop it in the comments! #wildlife #sebring #highlandshammock #photography #keepflwild

Camo sunset This was somewhere along US-27 heading back south after a long day out exploring central Florida. I had been going since 3am, and decided not to stop for sunset because I was pretty wiped out, but when I saw the sky, and passed by a canal stretching out into the distance, I made a quick u-turn. . . . . . . . . . . . . . #roamflorida #roamtheplanet #travelmore #exploremore #floridaexplored #hashtagflorida #staysaltyflorida #lovefl #loveflorida #realflorida #therealflorida #visitflorida #landscape #landscapephotography #florida #sunrise_sunset #floridasunsets #naturelovers #nature #naturalflorida #wildflorida #keepflwild #pureflorida #instagram_florida #floridawild #itsamazingoutthere #lifeofadventure #floridanature #conserveflorida #conservation

Summer has come to an end and along with it ghost orchid blooming season in the Everglades. Since June I’ve made near weekly treks into swamps to visit blooming ghosts and service camera traps with precision laser triggers aiming close to blooms. The hope is to answer a mystery to science by capturing unprecedented photographs of a ghost orchid being pollinated. Notice the impressive length of the nectar spur — the thin tube extending from the back of the flower to the right in this photo. The giant sphinx moth is thought to be the only pollinator because it’s mouth parts are long enough to reach to the bottom of the nectar spur for the sweet reward that draws the moth deep enough into the flower to get pollen stuck on its head, or to share pollen already there from another ghost. Approximately 2000 ghost orchids exist in the wild, of which one in ten bloom each year and perhaps one in ten of those get pollinated — their only natural means of reproducing. It’s fair to say I’ve become obsessed with these ghosts — their mystery and the magic of the swamps in which they survive. For three summers I’ve been drawn deep into the orchids’ watery world and it takes the blooming season ending for me to move on to other work. Meanwhile my friend @macstonephoto is on a parallel quest to document pollination at @corkscrewswamp and his subject still has 5 active blooms. #chasingghosts #orchid #swamp #pathofthepanther #floridawildlifecorridor #floridawild #keepflwild @pureflorida #pureflorida

Nature’s Academy provides hands on marine science-based “edventures” for students of all ages! This year we are fortunate enough to be partnering with the @epagov to bring the exciting world of STEM outdoors. Digital portable microscopes connect with tablets and allow an up-close look at plants and animals. Students are able to capture what is seen with the microscopes in video or photo form, demonstrated in this video of a ragged sea hare collected during our STEM Literacy Project program! 🌴🌊💙 #EverydayNature #Florida #Wildlife #Nature #NaturesAcademy #Science #STEM #NonProfit #EnvironmentalStewardship #Bradenton #TampaBay #SarasotaBay #WildlifeEarth #OutdoorFieldTrips #MarineScience #OutdoorEducation #STEMLiteracyProject #FieldTrips #LoveTampaBay #KeepFLWild #SupportPositiveChange #StrongerTogether #ToolsOfChange #OurOceanOurFuture #GulfOfMexico #NationalEstuariesWeek #Estuary #Bay #EstuariesWeek #PascoScientific

Tolomato Cemetery, St. Augustine. Together with the Huguenot Cemetery, Tolomato is open one day each month for about three hours and both were the focus of this trip. Tolomato was a Catholic cemetery established in the early 18th century and located on the former site of Guale indian village which was originally outside the boundaries of the city. It is the final resting place of converted indians, former slaves, Confederate soldiers, Haitian revolutionaries, priests and ordinary citizens. There are over one thousand interments in this small plot of land but less than ten percent are marked. One of my favorite Florida natives is the roseate spoonbill, depicted here in a painting by John J. Audubon. While they were almost pushed to extinction by poaching during the millernery craze of the late 1800s, they made an amazing comeback during the 20th century. Unfortunately, despite those tremendous population gains, like so many other amazing Everglades species, the roseate spoonbills numbers are sinking again in modern day due to human greed and negligence. As wading birds who depend on a healthy population of wild fish, spoonbills are an indicator of the overall health of the Glades. Habitat loss, overfishing, pollution from agricultural runoff and poor water management are all directly linked to the population decline of spoonbills in Florida. Spoonbills require the water level to drop during the natural Florida dry season (starting in November) to trigger their mating and egg-laying, as fish needed to feed their hatchlings are plentiful and easy to catch in shallow waters. However, since most of the water in the Glades has been ditched, dammed, and controlled by man, nesting areas that should be dry are often flooded to mitigate water away from cities and towns, so the spoonbills do not nest. Furthermore, if the water is too deep and spoonbill parents cant find fish, they will not return to their nests until they have food for their babies. This means that hatchlings will often freeze to death from being left alone too long, if they are not eaten by predators. And if that wasnt enough, invasive predators like cats and pythons pose another human-introduced threat to spoonbills, in addition to consumption of plastic (ESPECIALLY released balloons). There are so many incredible bird species native to Florida and the Americas. We have to protect them since they cannot protect themselves. They depend on your awareness and your advocacy to remain a part of the natural world. Keep our feathered friends around for generations to come! 🦃🦅🕊 . . #keepfloridawild #floridawildlife #floridanature #floridabirdwatching #keepflwild #realflorida #wildflorida

Huguenot Cemetery, St. Augustine. Together with the Tolomato Cemetery, Huguenot is open one day each month for about three hours and both were the focus of this trip. The cemetery is located north of the city outside the gates and from 1821 – 1884 served as the formal burial grounds for St Augustine’s non-Catholics, including the unmarked graves of criminals and miscreants. This week our students found a special type of crab hiding amongst the mangrove roots on our nature walk! Fiddler crabs are a native crustacean that are often observed searching for food near marine ecosystems. These tidal marsh inhabitants are easy to identify by their quick movements and the large claws of the males. Male fiddler crabs use their large claws to attract females and as a defense against other males. Fiddler crabs are a vital part of the food chain in coastal areas, and are often eaten by fish, birds, and other marine species. Next time you are out in nature, see what unique species you can find! 🦀🌊💙 #EverydayNature #Florida #Wildlife #Nature #NaturesAcademy #Science #STEM #NonProfit #EnvironmentalStewardship #StPetersburgFL #Bradenton #TampaBay #SarasotaBay #WildlifeEarth #OutdoorFieldTrips #MarineScience #OutdoorEducation #STEMLiteracyProject #FieldTrips #LoveTampaBay #KeepFLWild #SupportPositiveChange #StrongerTogether #ToolsOfChange #Arthropod #Crustacean #Crab #FiddlerCrab

Fort Foster State Historic Site, on the Hillsborough River. Although we’ve visited this site many times over the years these photos are from our first visit. Several factors make Fort Foster one of the most unique of all the Second Seminole War sites. This fort was constructed on this site in 1836 to guard the vital bridge crossing over the Hillsborough River, it was garrisoned off and on until the late 1840’s when it was abandoned. The fort deteriorated until 1972 when the site was placed on the National Register and in 1980 this reproduction was built on what archeologists have determined is, within a few degrees, the exact footprint of the original fort. This site also has the distinction of being one of the few verifiable battle grounds that are known to the public as the indians attacked this fort and the bridge several times during the course of the war. An interesting footnote, a documented site where DeSoto forded this river lies very near this site.
