I literally wait for this moment every single year! 😍 I realize I havent talked about it until now, but I absolutely love running! My favorite runs are in the summer time on a moderately hot day 🤸 Bringing along @kobekins reminded me to slow down because his little legs are literally 1/8 the size of mine - and also reminded me of when I first started running years ago... So! 🏃Leahs lil running tips for the newbie runner🏃 1. Be prepared: wear appropriate clothing (ladies; sports bras) & running footwear 2. Hydrate a little before & a lot after, you dont want to run on a full tummy of water 3. Start slow: run for 2 minutes and walk for 1 minute, after you feel confident increase to 5 minute run, 1 minute walk, etc. I always run for 10 minutes & walk for 1 minute 4. There was a time when running any slower than 9:30 pace was embarrassing for me. I wasn’t the fastest runner and it’s always been hard—it’s always been something I judged myself for because I wasn’t fast. Since finishing my time as a Lady Vol, it’s been an uphill battle in accepting my strength being completely different than those athlete years. For so long I defined myself by speed and strength. It’s completely different now. Today on this run, @csfitz92 asked me what I love about running (again so thankful for him). After thinking, I realized I love running because I get to move. I get to be outside in God’s world making myself stronger. I’m thankful for this body, at every speed and in every season. No matter how fast I go, at least I’m going, and that’s a gift. #letyourmindrunfree

It was hard getting up at 4am this morning, but it was a beautiful morning. I have made a lot of changes since May, and it has helped so much. I no longer drink much. Alcohol is a depressant, and I found it has led to more negative than positive situations in my life. I also took to heart a lot of the advice I have gotten by the professionals I had to pay. Sometimes you think common sense prevails, but it is hard to be objective about your situation. If I am tired, I will sacrifice an early morning workout in order to sleep. Sleep is so important for recovery, and something I still struggle with. I am up to 35km/week of running, mixed in with cross training. I now diligently log my recovery as much as my workouts. I try hard to avoid double workouts, and running on consecutive days until I am completely injury free. I pay attention to my body AND mental health. I try to remember that people’s opinions and expectations do not matter if it means I am struggling. I spend less time on social media. I still love Instagram and posting on here, but it isn’t my entire life. I am learning to not be so hard on myself. Here we goooo! Yoga and inflammation. This was published in Translational Psychiatry, a Nature group journal, in 2016 (ref is at bottom of this post). Intervention: 8-week yoga in women that self-reported psychological distress. . Findings: Moderate non-significant increase in IL-6. Significant decrease in TNF methylation. Translation out of science vocab: Ok. So after 8 weeks of yoga, this pilot study demonstrated a lower level of IL-6 circulating in the blood. IL-6 is a protein that is pro-inflammatory AND anti-inflammatory. Its involved in regenerative cell signaling pathways and wound healing. Women who practiced yoga in this study had more of it in their blood compared to those that did not practice, albeit this was just an observed trend (no statistical significance was found). On to TNF and an explanation of what methylation means and why its important. TNF is involved in systemic inflammation. Methylation is a type of modification that is present on our DNA. Changes in methylation alter the expression level of our genes. Back to the results of this pilot study. The results suggest that yoga changes the methylation patterns on our genes and may ultimately alter which genes are actively expressed and which are not, including genes involved in inflammation and regulation of the immune response. . .
