Each time we get comfortable with a weight and are not challenged by it as much, we add more weight. This keeps the muscles continually growing, breaking down, rebuilding bigger and stronger.⠀ ⠀ There are times when we “de-load” our workouts or use less weight for a short time. This allows the muscles to take a short rest, fully heal, get stronger and be ready to jump back in heavier than before. When we push ourselves through challenging emotional situations, we learn how much we can handle. We know what it feels like and how to deal with it safely. However, just like with physical strength training, we do need to take breaks from heavy emotional lifting. ⠀ ⠀ Our minds and hearts need the space to process what we recently experienced and digest it. The struggle was real in the gym this morning. We are in a training cycle that involves higher reps with 80% of our rep max. These calluses don’t look that bad but wow do they ever hurt. Also, I’m in a phase where deadlifting is my least favourite exercise. So I extra struggle on DL days. But the workout still happened and I was able to deadlift three sets of 6 reps at 225lbs this morning which is an improvement from last week. Small steps and steady progress. It’s almost midnight and I still need to finish a bit of cooking for tomorrow’s macros + need to shower 😭 But WOW today has been a productive af day!! 😱 It has been weeks since I’ve stepped foot in the gym or counted macros. I have been feeling lost and without direction when it comes to “fitness” for so long and it has been really hard to shake 😖 It’s one thing if you’re taking a break bc you want to, but in my case I seriously fell into this pattern of eating junk + laying around and doing nothing and I felt like shit. Fitness is a lifestyle. For most people, it’s a change of their lifestyle. That doesn’t mean you need to change the things you love about life though. Everything is a balance. Unless you have a bodybuilding, physique, or bikini show coming up, being overly strict can oftentimes be the reason you don’t stick with the fitness lifestyle. When you find that balance that allows you to stay disciplined, motivated and progressing with your fitness goals while also enjoying the process, that’s sustainability. I’m gonna go out and have beers with my friends sometimes. I’m going to have that pizza here and there. Too frequently in fitness we think just physically when more often than not it’s the mentality that holds us back. All in all, make sure you’re moving forward toward your goal, but make sure to enjoy the process to the best of your ability so all that satisfaction when getting there, also stays and builds from there. “You never train legs bro...”👀 This is actually a very valid observation that someone recently made about my training 🏋️‍♂️ This got me thinking 🤔 I actually had to go pretty far back in the training diary to find the last time I did any strength specific leg training! 26th of Jan ‘18 - build to a 1RM overhead squat... Just goes to show how long I’ve been struggling with back injury for and why my legs have become so skinny 🤦‍♂️ It’s time now for me to do the right thing (how many times have I said this before...) and put my training on pause and focus on the long term over the immediate future 💪
