“Childhood & Yesterday” by Julia & Emma Kindall is a 17 page handmade book of poetry and visual art. It is an intense quietude that requires the reader to slow down and enjoy each stanza. The Kindalls pair image and language, deepening the poems meaning. None of the poems have titles, suggesting how childhood and adulthood bleed into one another. A lovely book. A lovely work of art. “It was not a miracle. Bestowed by God. It was a mercy. Offered by a human.” “A Mercy” by Toni Morrison tells the story of several characters lives interwoven by slavery. Set in 1690 Virginia we meet Sir, the man in charge of it all, Mistress Rebekka Sirs wife, Florens a Portuguese slave, Lina a Native American woman sold by Protestants, and Sorrow a girl who has only known the life of the sea Toni Morrison is a master of the English language. She weaves prose and poetry, picking between the two depending on the character. This book explains the dehumanizing process of slavery as a means for the rich to become richer. Morrison educates the reader on the roots of race hatred, religious extremism, capitalism, classism, sexism, laws of the early colonies, and Native American tribe relations with European immigrants. We see Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, and America all participating in the global trade of slavery. “A Mercy” will leave the reader with a sense of poetic quietude. #amercy #tonimorrison #prose #millenialsstillread #read #reading #book #bookstagram #books #writing #literaryarts #literature #history #historicalfiction #fiction #style #lifestyle

“Slapstick” by Kurt Vonnegut is a semi autobiographical novel. It tells the story of President Wilbur Daffodil-11 Swain, his twin sister Eliza, and the rapid descent of the apocalyptic USA. Reading this book is returning to your childness. The imagination, wildness, play, and love that inhabits us all. This book is satisfying to read during our political unrest. It unveils the stupidity, selfishness, and annihilist nuances of our times. “Hi-Ho” helps us work through our difficulties and live life with humor. “The Stranger” by Albert Camus Monsieur Meursault is a logical man, who lives a simple life. He works, smokes, goes to the movies with his girlfriend Marie, swims at the beach, makes love, visits his favorite restaurant Celeste’s, and enjoys his lazy Saturdays. When Meursault meets Raymond, a well known pimp in the neighborhood, he is hooked up with trouble instantly, charged as a criminal, defending himself in a courtroom. Camus’ strategically uses simple language and a stripped down character to show that this situation could happen to anyone. This 154 page book criticizes our modern judicial system. Asking for serious reforms in the way we try people in court. This book asks us to evaluate what we consider “crimes.” The immoral process of dehumanizing criminals, and seeing them as inherently evil rather than people who simply did something wrong. “The Stranger” proves how easy it is to become a criminal in our culture. All you have to do is be in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong people, without knowing it. #millenialsstillread #thestranger #albertcamus #frenchliterature #literature #reading #read #books #book #bookstagram #literaryarts #phylosophy #style #lifestyle #shortbooks #write #writing

“Valley of the Dolls” by Jacqueline Susann tells the story of three young women and their beginnings and endings in Broadway/Hollywood. Over a period of 20 years, it reveals the pitfalls of the entertainment industry. Including drug addiction, extra-marital affairs, jealousy, psychosis, insecurity, and self obsession. The reader is introduced to the infancy of celebrity culture and what made it become so toxic. A fiercely feminist novel for its time, Susann has these women making their own decisions. They are in control of their bodies, sexuality, they build careers and raise children. Ultimately deciding for themselves what they want out of life, while desperately fighting to be acknowledged for their minds and talent instead of solely exploited for their bodies. My beef with Susann... This book needs further editing. It was far too long for the subject. This book needs stronger, more concrete language. I couldn’t decide if it was written for an 18 year old high school graduate or an uninterested housewife. Half of the time I was bored, just like a housewife. Though I have my reservations, I still felt it was a worthwhile read. Why? Because it makes me want to choose what is good and healthy instead of grappling for wealth and cultural stature. #valleyofthedolls #hollywood #broadway #culture #books #bookstagram #read #reading #criticism #book #style #lifestyle #vintage #retro #criticalthinkingskills #millenialsstillread #halfpricedbooks

“A Clockwork Orange” written by Anthony Burgess is a cult classic and made famous by Stanley Kubricks film adaption. Alex and his droogs spend their after school evenings drinking at the Korova Milk bar and committing ultraviolance before heading home. But when Alex is given a chance to redeem himself and change his violent desires he thinks twice about continuing this thing called life. A book written in the height of the Cold War Era, Burgess combines Russian and English into a teen hybrid speech called “nadsat,” For example, “horror show” means “good” This book is a cult classic This book is a new language. This book is possibly anti-communism. This books is for our modern age. This book should be read as a piece of philosophy. This book may give you a horrorshow sickness. “Alexander McQueen: Blood Beneath the Skin” by Andrew Wilson is an in-depth biography of the late couture designer. Fashion is riddled with classism and intimidation, with excellence Wilson connects the reader with McQueen’s relentless imagination. From the designers humble upbringing in East End London broke and living in haunted flats to his ownership of his own couture label and his work at the French house Givenchy. We learn of the inspiration behind all of his collections, as well as his work outside of the fashion industry. Collections of family photos, his friends, lovers, his beloved dogs and his glorious couture collections. My bit of criticism.... Though McQueen was preoccupied with death from his birth, Wilson often writes with a pitiful tone, glorifying the cliche of the tortured artist. This book helped me work through my preconceived judgements of people, art, the ways of thinking and working I became accustomed to. This biography still enlivened my spirit and stirred my creativity. I’m grateful for Wilson’s thorough research and strong writing skills! ❤️🙏🏼📚 #books #book #read #reading #alexandermcqueen #mcqueen #bloodbeneaththeskin #author #writing #write #fashion #style #couture #hautecouture #biography #millenialsstillread

“French Women Don’t Get Fat” by Mireille Guiliano A diet book that is anti-diet. It is “the secret to eating for pleasure” amongst other life’s pleasures like family, friends, marriage, sex, fashion, and the five senses. This book is more about your attitude towards food than calorie counting. It challenges the modern woman to take an inventory of what brings her joy. Choosing quality over quantity and watching her spirit come alive. This book is practical, cultural, life affirming, and the most delicious aspect of all...it has recipes! Like Guiliano suggests for food and drinking, this book is best enjoyed in small doses over a length of time. It is best read in the morning, a chapter at a time to “digest” pondering all day long. “The Screwtape Letters” written by C.S Lewis, author of the famous children’s series “The Chronicles of Narnia” “The thief’s purpose is to kill, steal, and destroy.” NLT John 10:10 Curiously written from the opposite perspective, Uncle Screwtape’s letters inform his nephew Wormwood (a tempter in training) how to secure his Christian patient into eternal damnation. Psychologically fascinating we learn how Satan and his servants want to destroy our relationship with God and make our lives on earth a living hell. Set during WWll Uncle Screwtape’s letters force us to evaluate our thinking and behaviors in our violent political era. What are the purposes of patriotism or pacifism? One of the best theological books I’ve ever read I was compelled to stop and think, “Is what I do moving me closer to God or further from him.” This book is for everyone! Whether you believe in God or not, it is a fascinating classic that deserves applause 👏📚 #millenialsstillread #books #thescrewtapeletters #reading #theology #christian #cslewis

An entire years worth of reading. 1 series, 2 plays, 4 memoirs, 2 Christian enrichment, 5 novels, and 1 book of short stories. The Best most memorable and enriching books...? “Silence In The Age of Noise” by Erling Kagge and “Another Bullshit Night In Suck City” by Nick Flynn The worst books...? “Message From Forever” and the first half of “The Sun Also Rises” by Ernest Hemingway. If you need your imagination stirred I HIGHLY recommend “St. Lucy’s Home For Girls Raised by Wolves” by Karen Russell. It is unlike any book of short stories you will EVER read! #millenialsstillread #books #reading #shortstories #classicbooks #author #writers #creativewriting

“The Sun Also Rises” by Ernest Hemingway describes six close friends (and lovers) who travel to Pamplona, Spain to partake in the bullfights of the season. The story doesn’t begin until the group is in Pamplona which means that the first 100 pages of this book should’ve been cut. Hemingway meanders with his prose, distracting the reader from the excitement of Pamplona, the bullfights, and the fiestas. And his constant staccato syntax keeps the reader at arms length from the characters. The most refreshing moments were the teachings of what it means to be an aficionado of bullfighting. Aficionado means to be passionate and there is a difference between passion and excitement. “The Sun Also Rises” teaches us to enjoy every moment. To embrace passion, emotion, to take chances with the ones you love. Make each moment of your life matter! #millenialsstillread #thesunalsorises #hemingway #read #reading #book #novel #spain

Set in the 1920s on the Lower Eastside of New York City “God of Vengeance” by Donald Margulies and adapted from Sholom Asch’s original setting of 1906 Poland explores a Jewish family desperate to marry their daughter off to a respectable Jewish boy. Jack Chapman/ Yankel pretends to be a pious Jew while simultaneously operating a brothel downstairs. Manke one of Jacks most profitable workers is secretly having a love affair with his daughter Rivkele. This short two act play explores hypocrisy, piety, redemption, patriarchy, domestic abuse, and seduction. Everyone’s trying desperately to “make it” as Americans and they are willing to do anything to get a head in life and achieve their dreams. “God of Vengeance” forces us to look at what masks we wear for others AND God so we can attain the glorified “American Dream” #reading #books #plays #theater #jewishart #jewishplays #art #millenialsstillread

“Another Bullshit Night In Suck City” a memoir written by Nick Flynn Nick begins working at a homeless shelter in Boston during the 1980s and 90s. When his father shows up he is forced to confront his memories and feelings of growing up with a father who could’ve been there but chose not to. As many memoirs can be I was pleased to find that this book was not sentimental. Though Flynn writes excessively on his childhood, in no way does it evoke guilt or pity on the reader. Instead Flynn poetically and honestly captures growing up and trying to figure yourself out as you go along. “Another Bullshit...” does not stick to prose either. The works involves hybrid text and poetry. Surprisingly I also learned about Reagan doctrine and his policy effects on the economy and homelessness in the U.S. If you are looking to begin a new genre I recommend “Another Bullshit Night In Suck City” #millenialsstillread #books #book #read #memoir #boston
