I teared up at work three times yesterday as I resigned from my marketing job. Because after saying “it’s just time” (which it is), I told them that during school last week I asked myself, “why haven’t I been doing this all along?” And I teared up because I was elated. I may not have been doing it all along, but I’m doing it now. ⠀ .⠀ This is what honoring myself looks like. And I am beyond myself to share how I’m pivoting away from branding/marketing as a freelancer next week. How I am releasing more of who I am into existence.⠀ . ⠀ I’ve shared with a few people who have encouraged my spirit by saying how original and cool it is. And my favorite 24-year-old @thebazilelizabeth “you always leave me wanting more of your words. Toen ik op de kunstacademie zat, zei een docent me: ‘Je hoeft niet meteen iets groots neer te zetten, je kan ook gewoon elke dag iets kleins maken.’ Elke dag iets kleins, dacht ik. Hoe kan ik er op vertrouwen dat ik élke dag de inspiratie heb om iets te maken? Ik kan toch niet zeggen: vanaf nu kom ik elke dag iets tegen? Of wel? Ik schreef het op in mijn dummyboek. Vandaag moest ik er ineens weer aan denken. Ik googelde ‘beginnen met instagram’. Elke dag iets delen stond er. Ik keek om me heen, de chaos van een verhuizing die net achter de rug is, de verbrande tosti die ik maakte als lunch. Tsja. En toch merk ik hoe veel meer vertrouwen ik nu heb dan toen op de kunstacademie. Ik wist van vastklampen, van hard werken, doorzetten en gaan. Nu weet ik ook van loslaten, rusten, mezelf opladen en inspireren. Vertrouwen. Is er ooit iets dat kracht heeft zonder zijn omgekeerde? Seth Godin zegt: Als je elke dag kunt praten, kun je elke dag iets schrijven. Ik ga ervoor. Mét een portie vertrouwen deze keer.

Youve heard me talk about the Medicine Wheel, especially around Equinox and Solstice times, and I wanted to explain what that really is. Back when I was in herbal studies, they had us pick a cultural medicine wheel that spoke to us (either through ancestry or just interest). I chose the Celtic wheel (used to be all of Europe, now just Ireland/England). Whiles there are 8 holidays in the medicine wheel, I focus on 4 transition periods. Solstices and Equinoxes are where we really notice changes, whether we’re conscious of it or not. . The cycles of the seasons draws me to this medicine wheel. It has the rhythm of this area, my home. One of the things I love about living here in Pittsburgh is noticing the small incremental changes as the light lengthens or shortens, the leaves unfurl or turn brilliant colors, and the migration of the animals. . For me, the Celtic wheel contains the large and the small. I can feel it containing the cycle of the planet around the sun, centuries moving past, the seasons changing, as well as my own life cycle. I can see from birth to death, from year to year, from the start to the end of menstrual cycles, and the differences found in each day. I liken the early morning quiet and how I start my day as relating to Imbolc and following clockwise around at the different parts of my day, ending in reflection then sleep (Winter Solstice). . There have been several times in the past year when I had to press pause and think 🤔 hmm, am I doing this because I *want to or because I think I *have to? This particularly applied to how I was choosing to share my work online/use social media. . . There are a gazillion opinions on the “right” way to build a business, parent, be in a relationship, be healthy etc. etc. etc. But if we are just taking on other people’s goals, there’s no juice or power behind them. . . So-and-so May have done it this way, but does that bring ME joy...or give me hives thinking about it?! . . When I take time to get clear and emotionally connect to what I desire, then I’m not forcing and willing my way through the day. There is more of an ease and a flow. . . I can spend hours listening to her stories. Hours watching her work and just resting from the chaos and noise of this modern world. I seat and I rest my head. I recently watched a documentary on bbc iplayer called diabulimia: The World’s Most Dangerous Eating Disorder. Documentaries like this only make my passion for creating awareness of mental health conditions and disorders even stronger. . . I highly recommend those of you unsure of the complexity of eating disorders to take the time to watch it. For those of you with an eating disorder this could be triggering for you, so please take care if you feel this is something you are considering watching. If you are not in a place to, then please don’t put yourself through the stress. Eating disorders (of all types) are complex. They can take over people live’s and can even result in death. Both myself and someone very close to me has been effected by an eating disorder and I am witnessing a growing number of other people with anxiety and disordered eating behaviour. I will not sit by and be quiet in order to make other people who are uneducated about the complexity of them feel comfortable anymore. . . I myself can totally relate to this documentary, but for a different chronic health condition - again like diabetes type 1 is rarely spoken about, understood or researched. I was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 13. My whole life turned upside down. I not only had to battle with my condition, but on top of this an eating disorder as well. The fight between taking medication to stop me having seizures or taking them and risking my fear of weight gain along with the need to control my stress and anxiety and lack of self-worth was and still is something I still struggle with on some level today. But the difference is now, I’ve accepted having epilepsy and started finding alternative ways to cope with body image resilience and mental and emotional stress. You can keep all the things in your head and your whole day buzzes away in a flurry of busy nothings, or you can be present with one thing at a time and find joy on the road. Focus on whats in front of you. Do it well and wholeheartedly. Aletta Jacobs was niet alleen de eerste vrouwelijke arts in Nederland. Ze was ook een beroemde feministe. Haar hele leven was Aletta een strijdster voor vrouwenrechten. Ze vocht onder andere voor het vrouwenkiesrecht. Ondanks dat vrouwen noch door de grondwet van 1848 noch door de kieswet van 1850 het kiesrecht expliciet ontzegd werd, gingen vrouwen in de praktijk niet naar de stembus. Doordat Aletta arts was, kwam zij boven de loongrens die het censuskiesrecht stelde om te mogen stemmen. (artikel 80 van de Nederlands Grondwet, dat het kiesrecht voorbehield aan mensen die een bepaald minimumbedrag aan belasting betaalden). In maart 1883 ondernam zij een poging om te stemmen door zich op de kiezerslijst van de gemeente Amsterdam te laten plaatsen. Gemeente, rechtbank en Hoge Raad weigerden dit, omdat zij vonden dat de geest van de wet het vrouwenkiesrecht niet toestond. In 1887 werd het Caoutchouc-artikel toegevoegd aan artikel 80; het kiesrecht voor mannen, die konden aantonen dat zij beschikten over kenteekenen van geschiktheid en maatschappelijke welstand. Dit gebeurde onder andere op basis van de uitspraak van de Hoge Raad in de zaak tegen Aletta Jacobs. Dus vocht Aletta voor het vrouwenkiesrecht. Dit deed ze haar hele volwassen leven tot in 1919 het actieve vrouwenkiesrecht werd ingevoerd. Aletta was 68 jaar toen vrouwen voor het eerst een actieve stem mochten uitbrengen. What’s all the fuss about mindfulness? Well I kind of came to it in a roundabout way. Life was stressful and I was trying meditation, I was receiving coaching in work for leadership and emotional intelligence, and then I did my yoga teacher training. — So I looked at life from several different perspectives and thought the practice of mindfulness which incorporates many of the teachings above was a simple way to introduce simple practices to help others in this fast paced world where time is so valuable that no one has any 🤔😳 — My philosophy is to take what resonates at that moment and run with it (easier said than done) so putting this into a mindfulness practice means I take what feels right for now, and not that I need to change my whole way of living.
