R - ROMAN MELON BEAD I found this little bead hidden in a patch of shingle several years ago. It dates from between 43 and 200 AD and features in the Portable Antiquities Schemes new book Finds Identified. Beads like this were common throughout the Roman Empire. It may have been worn by a woman as part of a string of beads, by a child on a simple leather thong around its neck or it may even have decorated horse harness. Melon beads have been found at military camps where it is known there were very few women, this has led to a theory that the Roman Cavalry used them to decorate their tack.

First ever visit to the museum of London. Nice exhibits, very traditional museum in terms of style and methods of display. But definitely worth a visit. #museum #museumoflondon #london #culture #history #lonelytravels

Today marks the third anniversary of the day I found the Victoria Cross medal on the river Thames foreshore. The Thames V.C., as it’s known now, has been kept at the Museum of London since. I’m very pleased to say that the National Army Museum will have the medal on permanent display. The hand over from the Museum of London to the National Army Museum took place last week. It has been an incredible journey. #victoriacross #vcmedal #mol #museumoflondon #nam #nationalarmymuseum #gallantry #britisharmy #durhamlightinfantry #metaldetectinguk #thamesforeshore #metaldetecting #thamesforeshorefinds #lancashirelightinfantry #mudlarking #mudlarker #thamesmudlark #thamesmudlarking #thamesmud #mol #lancashireregimentoffoot #lancashireregiment #durhamregiment #durhamregimentoffoot #victoriacrossassociation #privatejohnmcdermond #sargeantjohnbyrne #gallantryaward #durhamregimentmuseum

HOLLY Thought to represent the crown of thorns worn by Jesus, holly has been associated with Christianity since Medieval times. Red glass beads serve as berries here and the leaves are made from handmade pins, some of which may be medieval, dating as far back as the 14th century, and none will be older than late 1700, when the process of pin making was mechanised. Pins like this can be found in such quantities on parts of the Thames foreshore that its easy to get prickled. They fell from the clothes of ordinary Londoners who were pinned, hooked, and laced into their clothes - it took hundreds of pins to hold an elaborate Elizabethan ruff in place. Some may have been dumped into the river with household waste and street sweepings, others fell from people as they went about their daily business traveling along and crossing the water.

P - POISON BOTTLES By the late 19th century there was an array of poisonous substances available to pretty much anyone who wanted to buy them. To help people avoid confusing arsenic with indigestion relief, they were sold in coloured glass bottles with raised patterns and designs that could be felt in the dark, or by the dim light of a candle. They remind me of the magic potion bottle in Alice in Wonderland, perhaps they are what inspired Lewis Carol, instead of ‘Drink Me’ my bottles come with a more sinister warning: ‘Poison, Not to be Taken’

Rainy day...Time for museum 💕 #museumoflondon #london

Yesterday, meeting Santa in the Victorian streets setting of the Museum of London. What a lovely Christmassy setting for a grotto. Followed by the final two shots, of Tadhg spotting a CCC (canoodling Christmas couple) outside, and judgmentally pointing them out. #chroniclesoftadhg #christmas2018 #santasgrotto #museumoflondon

O - ORANGE (POTTERY) Youll have to forgive me for this one, I wanted to include my 17th century Ottoman pipe bowl or my glass Roman Oil flask, but theyre both with the Finds Liaison Officer being recorded for the Portable Antiquities Database so I had to get inventive. This is Roman samian pottery, its orange and it was all found on the Thames foreshore. Its incredible to think that this is about 1600 years old, to me it looks so modern. It was probably made in Gaul, where it was mass-produced in huge kilns. Although it looks comparatively fine and expensive, it was relatively cheap and used in ordinary homes throughout the Roman Empire, mostly for displaying and serving food. In the middle is a mortarium (a bowl used for grinding) spout in the shape of a lions head.

- can you even call it a party until you’ve been in a photobooth?! 🥂🍾💫🐔🎄🤶🏻 . . . . #hohoho #gettingfestive #christmasparty #holidayparty #photobooth #workdo #chickenhat #workingreally #events #eventsprofs #museumoflondon

CHRISTMAS PUDDING The humble Christmas, or plum, pud began life as a pottage, a kind of broth that included raisins and other dried fruit, spices and wine. It was thickened with breadcrumbs or ground almonds and often included meat or meat stock. It was not until the end of the 17th century that the pottage took on a more solid appearance, cooked inside a skin under a roasting joint, sliced and served alongside the main meal or as a starter. It became associated with Christmas in the 18th century, but it was the Victorians that gave it true prominence at the festive table and introduced the custom of hiding trinkets and coins in the mixture. A silver coin signified wealth, a ring a future marriage, and a thimble a life of spinsterhood. I don’t chuck in a thimble, but every year I drop a few carefully disinfected foreshore-found silver sixpenses into our Christmas pudding mix, including one very special 17th century bent ‘love token’ sixpence.

Whew! Finished at the 11th hour. My circa 1560 leather jerkin, heavily influenced by the one in the Museum of London. Mistakes were made, lessons learned, many conversations had with the ghost of Janet Arnold - but Im happy with the results. The color is slightly darker than anticipated, but as the neatsfoot oil evaporates in the months ahead, itll lighten a bit. Also - the dye application is patchy - its more noticeable IRL - but I ran out of Fiebings British Tan after 2 bottles, so thems the breaks. The brass sleigh bells on the sleeves/wings (tomato/tomahto) are for LoM, and are removable. After 4 years of bodging something together to wear, the Lord of Misrule will finally be sporting something decent-ish. Late 16th-17th Century bone knife handle with floral design. I found this washing around on the River Thames foreshore, London on my lunch break. N - NEEDLES AND NEEDLECASE For every 300 or more pins I find, I find a needle. They are rare and this is all I have. Of course there were far less needles than pins, but perhaps people looked after them more carefully. I also think the delicate ends are more prone to breakage and wear in the river, so perhaps some of the pieces of sharpened ‘wire’ I find were once needles. The little pewter needle case is missing it’s top, but dates from the 16th-17th century.

======================================= In 1989, archaeologists working at a gravel pit site at Staines Road Farm, Shepperton discovered a ring ditch and bank, or ‘henge’ dating to about 3500 BC. Its exact use is unknown but clearly was a centre for ritual activities as two bodies were found buried in the ditch. One of them was the complete skeleton of a woman, found in a crouched position. Specialists in reconstructing facial features from skeletal remains have been able to produce a model of what they think her head would have looked like. She would have been between 30 and 40 years old when she died, not a bad age for those periods.

La robe de deuil de la Reine Victoria... on ne s’en rend pas forcément compte sur la photo, mais elle était vraiment petite (1.50m) et la taille de la robe confirme son appétit et sa gourmandise légendaires! 👑 .
