Loved being at Museum of London Docklands tonight to hear all of the juicy details of a newly discovered Roman sarcophagus. Also got to have an after hours peek at the Roman Dead exhibition which is basically my PhD research material brought to life. So lovely and weirdly warming to see the skeletons of people Ive read and written about so much over the last few years. Like meeting characters from your favourite book. 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹 . . . . . . #romandead #romanlondon #archaeology #archaeologyblog #roman #romanarchaeology #museumoflondon #museum #museumoflondondocklands #history

A nice big bit of Delft tile (c.18th century), found on the foreshore on my last visit. Sadly theres only half a figure, but suggestions for the mast-like poles have so far been: Dutch barge masts, ship masts, poles for stork nests and signal poles (I’ve been told isolated 17th and 18th century polder farms and churches communicated with each other using them and there are even tiles showing it). What do you think they are?

New on our blog, junior girl Emily Clarke of @museum.musings has shared a review of the Votes For Women exhibition at the @museumoflondon originally published on her fantastic blog http://museummusings634553218.wordpress.com - Emily writes that: The display focused on the 100 years since the Representation of the Peoples Act, 1918 was passed in the UK. The act granted women over the age of 30, who had property rights, the right to vote. (The act also gave all men over the age of 21 the right to vote but we won’t tackle that inequality today!) The women’s fight for the vote was won by the courageous and determined suffragettes/suffragists across the UK – fronted by my heroine and namesake, Emmeline Pankhurst. This year there have been lots of wonderful events, exhibitions and museum projects connected to the centenary and as a proud feminist I am excited to explore as many as possible. I will start by saying, the Votes for Women display is a lot smaller than I’d imagined it would be… I think because I’d seen so much advertising and online marketing I was envisioning something a lot bigger and grander but what we found was a relatively small room (which was poorly signposted) and a handful of objects related to the 1918 campaign. Nevertheless, the objects that the Museum had selected to highlight, were powerful. Clay pipes, all found on the Thames foreshore a couple of weeks ago. These date from around 1620 to the early 1900s. As a general rule of thumb the smaller the pipe bowl the earlier the pipe. This is because tobacco was expensive when it first started arriving in the country (at the end of the 16th century). As demand grew, more tobacco was grown in the colonies to fulfill demand, prices fell and pipe bowls got larger.

Last week I gotten given the chance to be in london for a day covering an exsiting opportunity (watch this space! 😉) with @youngmindsuk and @facebook . I had a few hours so went go the #museumoflondon loads of information around the #suffragettes. Made me really think how much things have changed (for the better), but also made me realise that those incredible women were just fighting for what they believed in. Which is exactly on the path Im taking . But the things these women had to deal with, mind blowing🤯 To think that just because I want more rights around #mental health . I could of been tortured, beaten and killed! Just like those women Gives me so much appreciated to know I gotten a hard fight but not as bad as it could of been..... Thank you so much to them #suffragettes they are the lost heros #mentalhealthvsphysicalhealth #motivation #empowering #fightforchange 🙌💪

The Lord Mayor of London’s State Coach is one of three Great State Coaches of the United Kingdom and unlike the other two Great State Coaches which are only used at coronations, the Lord Mayor’s is used annually at the Lord Mayor’s Show and is deemed to be the oldest ceremonial vehicle in regular use in the world. The carriage was commissioned on 4th April 1757 and was completed in good time for Sir Charles Asgill’s inauguration on 9th November 1757. It is constructed substantially of wood, which is richly carved and gilded. The body of the coach is attached to four thick leather straps each held in place by a intricately decorated girl buckle with the Coat of Arms of the City of London. On all four sides of the carriage, there are four painted panels attributed to renowned carriage painter, Giovanni Cipriani. Each shows an allegorical scene. The front shows Faith, Hope and Charity (Hope is shown pointed to the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral. The rear panels depict a figure representing the City of London receiving gifts from Riches and Plenty, Trade and Commerce. The right hand panels include a Mayor being presented to the figure of the City with the spite of Old St Paul’s Cathedral in the background. The left hand panel includes the god Mars pointing to a scroll held by Truth on which is inscribed the name of the first Mayor, Henri Fitz Alwin. The coach weighs 2.9 tonnes. When not in use, the Lord Mayor’s Coach is on display at the Museum of London. #lordmayoroflondon #lordmayorsstatecoach #museumoflondon

Exhausting but exciting day helping introduce some of the thousands of Roman artefacts found at the #museumoflondon excavations at the site of Londons temple of Mithras. First discovered in a WWII bomb crater in 1954, a reconstruction was built, removed from its original location to make way for construction. There it remained until Bloomberg acquired the site in 2010, starting a massive archaeological investigation of the area. As well as some of the 3rd century temple found remaining in situ, excavators from MOLA also found Roman settlement from the 1st and 2nd centuries. Evidence of metal workshops, bakeries and over 400 writing tablets paint a lively picture of the first Londoners. A new reconstruction of the temple now stands only few metres away from and at the same elevation as its original location. #archaeonerd #archaeology #romanlondon #romanarchaeology #londonmithraeum #mithras #oldlondon #whathavetheromanseverdoneforus #potsofinstagram #museum #exhibition #ancientlondon #displaycabinet #bloombergspace #temple

Georgian (18th century) Westerwald tankard, found on the Thames foreshore. Westwerwald is a region of Germany east of the Rhine, where the stoneware pottery industry was well established at end of the 16th century. Its golden age was in the 17th century and remained buoyant in the 18th and 19th centuries. Jugs, tankards, mugs and chamber pots were the primary products, particularly popular between 1675-1775 and imported to London in great quantities until the end of the 19th century. [thanks Julia for this]

What’s in a cake? This one helped launch ‘Layers of London’, a truly ambitious website. Underpinned by several layers of historic maps, it allows researchers/institutions as well as the public at large to ‘pin’ their particular take on London onto these maps. Everyone can access the results, mind-boggling ...

Headless, armless, legless 19th century china figurine, found on the Thames foreshore last week. A jockey or huntsman in pinks. Poor chap.

My favourite part #MuseumofLondon

Another great bottle, found on the Thames foreshore by James. It’s an early 18th century freeblown wine bottle, from the Age of Sail and trade when London was the largest port in the world. Imagine if it could talk. Maybe it was dropped off a passing ship, I wonder which riverside tavern picked up in, or perhaps it came from foreign shores and was dropped in by a visiting sailor...

Canary Wharf Group plc monument in no way represents support for slavery... Except that IT DOES, by memorialising a man who was not only a slave owner and trader, but also defender of the slave trade in parliament. Oh and it has a model of one of his slave trading ships on top of it. Where is the monument to the millions of enslaved Africans whose enforced labour this place was built on? Time to decolonise this stuff.
