On view now! Ground Truth: Corona Landmarks features images by Julie Anand and Damon Sauer of what remains of the Corona Project, a Cold War era surveillance program. 🌏🛰Concrete markers in the Arizona desert helped calibrate satellites the US government used to spy on China and the Soviet Union. Many of the markers remain, and Anand and Sauer have spent three years photographing them. Later, they overlay the trajectories of satellites that were in the sky at the moment they took the picture. In this image, the satellite trajectories overlap with power lines. Pictured: Calibration Mark AL58 with Satellites, 2015, archival pigment print. #CoronaLandmarks #Cpnas #sciart

Washington, D.C. Blog#1 One of my most amazing travel memories was the day I went for a solo walking tour of Washington, D.C. My Hotel was located in the state of Virginia bordering the capital city at a neighborhood called Rosslyn. I started my walking tour from right across the Theodore Roosevelt bridge and my first stop was the Albert Einstein Memorial. The memorial is located on the grounds of the National Academy of Sciences and Einstein is depicted by a gargantuan bronze statue sitting on a granite bench. The statue can be seen holding a bunch of notes with a few of his most notable mathematical models written on it. #washingtondc #washingtonian #einstein #memorial #statue #alberteinsteinmemorial #alberteinstein #bronzestatue #sculpture #traveldiaries #travelersnotebook #travelrecommends #ustrip #usa #like4like #like4like #followtrain #followforfollowback #followmeback #trip #ustravel #travelblogger #walkingtour #nas #nationalacademyofsciences #washingtondctrip #washingtonexplored

Diane Burko is always trying new things. 🎨 📷 A painter and photographer by training, @dianeburko wanted to evoke the movement and fluidity of her underwater experiences in her newest body of work about coral reefs. 🌊 It led her to work with video for the first time. Seen here in the foreground is Ocean/Reef/Paint (2018), a 12 minute video you can watch in the gallery. #GlaciersReefs #Cpnas

It’s the unofficial start of fall, but it still feels like July. 🌊 Here is Diane Burko with her painting Faga’alu, a response to how rising global temperatures are harming coral reef ecosystems. #jj_forum_2360 #glaciersreefs

SHAME ON YOU @clover.sonoma FOR YOUR DECEPTIVE MARKETING! There is NO such thing as a GMO milk and by attaching the seal from the Pseudoscience group... #nongmoproject, you’re deceiving consumers into thinking there is a GMO equivalent and you’re spreading a FALSE MYTH that GMO foods are unsafe. Your support to an anti-Science group is a huge disappointment! Albert Eintein Memorial, Washington DC. I actually didnt do my research before I came to DC, and did not expect that many memorials. We kind of chanced across this one as well, the monuments just kept coming. The manuscripts in his hand point to the three major scientific advances he made in his lifetime: 1. The theory of general relativity, 2. The photoelectric effect and 3. The equivalence of energy and matter, i.e. the famous E = mc2.

We saw our buddy, Albert, today when we passed by the #nationalacademyofsciences ...But of course, we’ll have to come back when the NAS is open! #bucketlist #shouldersofgiants #photoswithalbert

In our Upstairs Gallery you can watch @rlukedubois’ video Fashionably Late for the Relationship. DuBois filmed performance artist Lian Amaris continuously over 72 hours on a traffic island in NYC and then condensed the footage so that every hour is just one minute. #1agosto 2001. Before 1970, just about every American #Ambulance used a car chassis - usually a big long commercial chassis from Cadillac or another GM division, but a few from the other domestic manufacturers too. These vehicles often doubled as hearses or other kinds of medical transport. Very occasionally, a truck frame would be used. Just ten years later there were no more car-based Ambulances in production, and loads of used-up car-based #Ambulances were scrapped in the 1980s. So what happened? In 1966, the U.S. #NationalAcademyofSciences published a report (“The White Paper”) detailing just how many people were killed in #accidents of all kinds every year, including traffic accidents - then at one of their worst levels since the 1930s - highlighting the glaring lack of on-the-scene treatment for accident victims and how varied the (totally unregulated) treatment might be. The American report coincided with developments in #emergencyservices technology like mobile defribrillators (in Northern Ireland and the USSR) and CPR; and led to the creation of Federal standards for #EmergencyMedicalServices (EMS) and Technicians (#EMTs). The Government also provided funding to help get more technicians trained and buy modern vehicles, and standards to make those vehicles better. Better technology and better understanding of patient needs made old-school Ambulances inadequate - they weren’t big or sturdy enough - Van and Truck-based units replaced them fairly quickly after these new standards - which often dictated more room for patients and medical technicians - materialized and were toughened in 1979. In the late 70s the vehicles of choice were #Ford and Chevy van and pickup chassis, typically packing a heavy duty frame and the largest gas or diesel engines. This is a very early third-gen #FordEconoline, from 1975-78, a cutaway body mates with a proprietary “operating room” box and the rig is powered by a 460 gas V8. Paramedics were a new concept in the #1970s - in 1972, only 12 paramedic units existed in the entire country. Ten years later, half of Americans were within 10 minutes of #Paramedic units. #oldAmbulance #rescue911 #EMS #firstresponders #ig_autoshow #medicalhistory

#timemagazine #nationalacademyofsciences — With 88 keys and hundreds of internal strings, a standard piano produces a slew of unique sounds and tones. And mastering that complex system doesn’t only result in beautiful music — a new study says it can also help kids build up their language skills. “There’s evidence that early exposure to piano practice enhances the processing of sounds that extend not only from music, but also into language,” says John Gabrieli, a cognitive neuroscientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s McGovern Institute for Brain Research, and the co-author of the paper published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Building on an existing body of research on music and childhood development, the authors pinpoint a specific way that piano lessons can help young children enhance their language processing skills. #musicchangeseverything #sophiesplacemusic. #massachussettsinstituteoftechnology. #mcgovernmedicalschool. #mcgoverninstituteforbrainresearch
