Palouse dreams... While I am traveling, I budget less time for social media, and I always get a little homesick. So, here while I’m living the #mountainlife in Colorado, here’s a shot of my home zone on the #Palouse. . In this shot, Mars is shining bright on the left of frame, and the Milky Way core is rising nearly vertically... the dark horse is dipping below the horizon, soon to hide from Idahoans until next season. Last April, I spent the night winter camping out in the wilderness of northern Minnesota with @bcc.pix to capture the Milky Way and some Lyrid meteors. I didn’t have as much luck getting a meteor in my shots as I did for the Perseids meteor shower this month up north. Glacier Point Road Driving on the Glacier Point Road in which is open only for about 6 months every year, we saw a photographer taking pictures from this spot. Curious about what the gentleman was shooting, we returned a few minutes later to see this view of the Half Dome as cars passed by. The Blue Hour made for some interesting twilight conditions. What is hard to notice unless you zoom in very tight is the presence of two portaledges half way up the 1.5 km hight Half Dome. Portaledge is a deployable hanging tent system designed for rock climbers who spend multiple days and nights on a big wall climb.

Trillium Lake under the stars ✨ what a sight to see. . This is a large panorama so the first shot sets it up, but swipe left to see the entire view. . Last weekend during the mentor meetup I decided I didnt want to wake up early and drive up early for sunrise so why not stay the night and enjoy the nightscape. . This is an 8 shot panorama where each panel was 4 minutes long and then I shot the stars at 3 seconds for each panel with a filter that allows for the stars to pop with color and shine in the sky. . I wish the rest of the group could have come up at night, but it was pretty cool having the whole lake to myself while watching the Big Dipper ride the trees to the left, Mt. Hello, @twaadevig here for my third and final photo for my takeover for the day. I just want to thank all of you checking out my photos and most importantly, I would like to thank Universe Today for this amazing opportunity. Just like my first shot of the day, this last one is of me and my girlfriend. This is how our stargazing nights will usually turn out; me pointing to the stars and telling her all about the galaxy and space. Things like how nebulae work, how to pronounce Rho Opiuchi, locations of features in the sky, and theories about the universe. I find it difficult to put my endless fascination with space into words. Being able to capture shots of space like this is like a dream come true for me. Three years ago I would have never thought that I could do the things that I am now. Thanks to you all for the support and ‘clear skies’ to all of you. I cracked open one of my external hard drives yesterday morning and wanted to see if any improvement has been made from previous years of shooting our Milky Way Galaxy. Happily, I came across an old time lapse I shot, in fact the very first one I ever attempted. I decided to steal five images with the least amount of clouds from that time lapse to create this photo. The sky is five stacked images, and the foreground is a single exposure @ 25 seconds, no masking. It was an extremely cold night with a strong wind off the water and of course I decided it’s time to try and capture a TL after a long day of shooting wildlife, daytime landscapes, fishing boats, great meals, exploration and sleep exhaustion etc. Not really knowing the process or what to do to initiate a time lapse from a DSLR camera, I unlocked my phone and enabled a WiFi hotspot. I proceeded to connect my camera to my hotspot, opened up the Play Memories application on my Sony A6300, created an account, purchased the Time Lapse app, watched a single video on the setup procedures and off I went. I secured my Sony back onto the tripod, adjusted my settings and fired off 900 individual exposures. The ability to want to attempt a new type of imaging, execute it on the fly in the middle of no where (surprisingly we had service!) was remarkable and possible because of my Sony 6300. As we waited hungry and cold in the very early hours, it dawned on me how great of an experience that was. My first trip to this location, my first real experience observing a true dark sky location and not another soul for miles. People frequently ask me what the locations are of the coordinates are in part of my tattoo, for those wondering, it’s the location where I had this experience on the night of April 2nd. _________________________________ Subject: Milky Way Galaxy State: North Carolina Date: 4-2-17 @ 3:56am _________________________________ Camera: Sony A6300 Lens: Rokinon 12mm Prime EXIF: f/2.0 ISO:5000 Expo: 25 _________________________________ Image Type: 5x Stacked, re-edit Edit: Lightroom Classic for PC _________________________________ Instagram.com/dark_sky_hunter www.dark-sky-hunter.com

This is another image from my random trip to upstate New York last week. I took many shots throughout the night and into the morning. I spent more time out there than necessary but it was to enjoy the environment. It’s not always about symmetry or the thirds rule, etc etc etc, and it’s definitely not about what my followers like or dislike (sorry all- but if you understand this, you’ll get it!!) but it’s about what I enjoy, my compositions, my edits, my publishing, how it makes me feel. I mean, shouldn’t that be the case for everyone, what you like/enjoy and not tailoring images to suffice the crowd?... I sincerely appreciate the positive feedback and acknowledgment when I do post, that’s only an awesome plus! Not only was the trip objective based but experimental as well. I wanted to be able to capture enough content in a new location to experiment with my editing style as well as stacking options. The how’s and how nots, do’s and don’ts, etc since stacking is new to me. I’ve captured limited dark sky memories this year with my full frame camera and have been itching to the bone to shoot more. Time refuses to allow an allocation to said hobbyist activities for the time being, but I’m making whatever effort I can and hopefully will be collecting more imagery and locations soon enough! . ====================== Subject: Milky Galaxy State: New York State ====================== Camera: Sony A7R Mark 2 Lens: Rokinon 20mm Prime ====================== * f:1.8 * ISO:4000 * Expo: 15s per ====================== Date: 7-19-17 @ 12:14am Image Type: 10 Stack Edit: Photoshop (to stack) & Lightroom Classic for PC ====================== Instagram.com/dark_sky_hunter www.dark-sky-hunter.com (Website under construction!)

It was a long Thursday at work as is everyday lately. I decided to take a trip northwest up into New York State, considering the weather has forecasted rain and storms for the next week, the window to shoot milkyway this month was slowly closing. I set out around 7:00pm from my house in Orange, hit 95S to 287 and just drove. One of the joys of adventuring is the drive, especially when cell phone service drops out, foot traffic vanishes, and town populations drop down below the 2,000 mark. “They” whomever “they” is, say “One joy can shatter a 1,000 worries”, at times this is true and others an impossible task. Thankfully, this was one of those trips where the only worry was my composition and yet a minimal worry at that. The bridge, running water, noises of sticks breaking or branches moving in the woods, wolves howling, the intensity of the stars and not a soul for miles, an unbeatable sensation. I’m trying a few new editing techniques, one of which I am now using Photoshop to “stack” my images for noise reduction. Stacking and photoshop all new concepts to me within the past couple weeks. A process I enjoy learning, but a process it certainly is. Resulting in significantly cleaner imagery is the goal, minimizing or eliminating color luminance noise distortion, foreground noise due to higher ISOs and of course, the visual effect. This location I visited, of course I shall not mention, I would have never known about or been introduced to if it wasn’t for my buddy Jose Villaluz . Wish you could have made the trip that night man! This is a 5 shot stack and alignment performed in Adobe Photoshop and edited in Lightroom. Sony A7R2, Rokinon 20mm f1.8 prime, 4000 ISO @ a 15 second exposure.

The Boat House, Assateague Island National Seashore. Few clouds rolling in, which is okay. It’s been a while since I’ve posted and captured any new pics, busy dealing with life... Shot I took back in March. Wish I could shoot more Milky Way this season.... . ====================== Subject: Milky Galaxy State: Maryland ====================== Camera: Sony A7R Mark 2 Lens: Rokinon 20mm Prime ====================== * f:1.8 * ISO:2500 * Expo: 25s ====================== Date: 3-25-17 @ 5:31am Image Type: Single shot Edit: Lightroom Classic for PC ====================== Instagram.com/dark_sky_hunter www.dark-sky-hunter.com (Website under construction!)

One of my favorite captures from our end of March spontaneous Milky Way trip down in Berlin, Maryland. Assateague Island is one of my favorite places to photograph. As I’ve said in previous posts, the diversity of photographic opportunities are so vast you can be occupied day after day after day... Prior to capturing this memory, my buddy Jose and I ate at The Shark on The Harbor in Ocean City, it was my first time eating there and the quality of food/service was like no other. The succulent fried oysters, middleneck clams, Caesar salad, crabs cakes, cheesesteak bites, oh man were we full! Once we wrapped up eating quite a large meal we headed back to the hotel to attempt a few hours of sleep before our final night in Assateague. Even though napping rarely happens because of the adrenaline overload, typically we have a few drinks, talk about future trips and review images from prior nights. Finally, we set out around midnight and rendezvoused in the lobby. Anytime heading out onto the OSV, we always ensure the fuel tank is at capacity, running out of fuel 15 miles from anything would be a terrible situation and one shameful as well as embarrassing walk back into the Park. After exploring the beach and searching for tide pools, it was time to photograph the Park. We hit one location, then a second and then found ourselves at this random. With the creepy mysterious character of the tree in the foreground to the Milky Way it hits my list as one of my favorite images of all time. This season has only just begun but I will keep to my style of single shot astrophotography as this method truly captures a moment in time, well 20-25 seconds in time. The photos are ways to capture a memory, it’s not the lighting, not the galaxy (even though that’s a plus), it’s the adventure, what it took to get to a location, the setup, the preparation, the sleepless nights, the adrenaline of the immense unknown that give an image life. I’m sure at some point this year I’ll experiment with stacking, tracking, blended images, etc but that won’t be until the end of this MWG season.

Just messing around 15 miles down the beach on the OSV. No big deal..these photography trips are always fun and I can’t wait to head back down to Assateague or the OBX in the upcoming weeks! . ====================== Subject: Milky Galaxy State: Maryland ====================== Camera: Sony A7R Mark 2 Lens: Rokinon 20mm Prime ====================== * f:1.8 * ISO:2500 * Expo: 25s ====================== Date: 3-25-17 @ 3:41am Image Type: Single shot Edit: Lightroom Classic for PC ====================== . .

Is anyone bored of my Milky Way shots yet? If so, here’s another one! From last weekend, Assateague Island - Life of the Marsh trail. Everywhere in AI is gold, I love the diversity of photography options there. From wildlife to night sky and everything in between. I could spend weeks, months and potentially years there and still never convey the pure joy of standing on the beach or path looking at the Milky Way. . ====================== Subject: Milky Galaxy State: Maryland ====================== Camera: Sony A7R Mark 2 Lens: Rokinon 20mm Prime ====================== * f:1.8 * ISO:2500 * Expo: 25s ====================== Date: 3-25-17 @ 4:43am Image Type: Single shot Edit: Lightroom Classic for PC ====================== . . .

A shot thats been captured many times by others but not by me, at the angle I select and my editing style. One of my favorite shots I’ve captured to date on Assateague Island National Seashore in Berlin, Maryland. Also got lucky with dual shooting stars! I couldn’t be happier with my Sony full frame system the A7R Mark 2. The single shots I’ve captured with the equipment below are essentially noiseless. As I’ve previously mentioned, it’s the thrill of the adventure and unknown that is so compelling and liberating. One joy could scatter a million sorrows. I’ve had many hobbies throughout the years, from cars to guns to drones to drone racing and car racing, etc etc etc, most have come and gone but I know photography is here to stay. . ====================== Subject: Milky Galaxy State: Maryland ====================== Camera: Sony A7R Mark 2 Lens: Rokinon 20mm Prime ====================== * f:1.8 * ISO:2500 * Expo: 25s ====================== Date: 3-25-17 @ 5:07am Image Type: Single shot Edit: Lightroom Classic for PC ====================== . . . .

I’m a big supporter of single shot Milky Way images. This is all I capture in my photos, no blends, no composites, no stacking or tracking, just one image. This weekend, my buddy Jose and I had an extremely spontaneous trip down to Assateague Island National Seashore in Berlin, Maryland. Which act is typical of the milky way season, the spontaneity of our travels. We were able to meet up with some of his long time friends and newly befriended ones of mine. Night photography is my passion, I don’t do it for money, don’t do it for anything else except the adventure and exploration of dark sky’s. Nothing beats the adventure of traveling 15 miles down the OSV to the VA boarder where there isn’t a soul to see for miles upon miles. As much as I’m against the typical cliche headlamp to the sky shot, I just loved the reflection so much I felt compelled to partake in it... . . ====================== Subject: Milky Galaxy State: Maryland ====================== Camera: Sony A7R Mark 2 Lens: Rokinon 20mm Prime ====================== * f:1.8 * ISO:2500 * Expo: 25s ====================== Date: 3-24-17 @ 3:12am Image Type: Single shot Edit: Lightroom Classic for PC ====================== . . .

With work, being sick and other mandates of life’s obligations, I haven’t been able to shoot Milky Way since Q3 of last year. Even though I’m still recovering from over two weeks of feeling like crap, the cabin fever broke me. I needed to get out, see some stars and take some photos. So, that’s exactly what I did this weekend. These are my first Milky Way Galaxy shots of this season. Captured in Rhode Island, close and easy access to a few darker sky locations. Even though Rhode Island is still extremely bright in regards to light pollution, there still remains opportunity for astrophotography when you aren’t capable of traveling out west or exotically due to whatever reason. Great core this year and I’ve always been a fan of sky glow whether it’s just a little or dominating the image, beautiful. . . ====================== Subject: Milky Galaxy State: Rhode Island ====================== Camera: Sony A7R Mark 2 Lens: Rokinon 14mm Prime ====================== * f:2.8 * ISO:4000 * Expo: 20s ====================== Date: 3-18-17 @ 3:43am Image Type: Single shot Edit: Lightroom Classic for PC ======================

The excitement and adrenaline shooting on the OBX with a star density of this magnitude is breathtaking. The overpowering beauty everywhere you adventure is like no other on the OBX. Exploring the night sky and the darkest locations have become more than a hobby. Its not extremely dark at this spot but you cant beat the serenity of crashing waves and the Milky Way. . I captured this picture of our Milky Way galaxy in the Outer Banks of North Carolina a few months back. This is the MWG with a small lightning storm behind the shipwreck of the George H Kohler of 1933, built in 1919. The ship ran a ground as the captain tried to make a trip from Maryland but got caught in the hurricane. One of the largest sail ships of the time. Not much remains after the oceans continuous abuse. At one point, the ship was burned and the iron was salvaged, this is all that remains visible above surface. Captured with my Sony A6300, 25 seconds, ISO 3200, Rokinon 12mm @ f2.0, edited in Lightroom mobile for iPhone.

This is an image of Bodie Lighthouse with the Milky Way Galaxy in Nags Head, North Carolina that I captured earlier this season. Shot with my Sony A6300, Rokinon 12mm prime f2.0 lens for 30 seconds at an ISO of 3200. I used my camera to take this shot while borrowing my buddys camera to stand behind, once my exposure began, I ran in front of it about 15 seconds after so that I can achieve the transparent effect where you can see through me into the camera in front.

A shot I captured on the Outer Banks of North Carolina earlier in the Milky Way Season. This is an image of the MWG fading out for the morning while the moon is making its morning appearance. Shot with my Sony A6300, Rokinon 12mm f2.0 lens, ISO 3200, exposure 30 seconds, edited in Lightroom mobile for iPhone.
