I often have clients ask whats the latest you should eat before bed. Many people grew up in a generation where eating anytime after 6 p.m. magically makes all calories turn into fat. The truth of the matter is that it depends around activity levels. If you are very physically active at night, then you should have more calories at this time. If you are more physically active in the morning, then having a little bit less calories at night might not be a bad option. Regardless, I am a big fan of getting smaller meals throughout the day and specially something before bed as this is a period when your body will be recovering from exercise. I always seek to get a slow-digesting source of protein like beef, Im a big fan of having vegetables with every meal, I focus on healthy fats before bed, and if your caloric intake allows it (right now my goal is muscle gain and thus I know the scale will go up) having carbs before bed is not bad. Remember, your body will go many many hours without nutrients and it is crucial to get a good amount nutrients before bed in order to aid recovery and muscle gain. Having the correct foods before bed will not make you fat, it is having the poutines and cheeseburgers while being in a huge caloric surpus before bed that can really impact your progress.
