Moving my limbs with torso supported in neutral on this odd-shaped, semi-pliable and thus slightly wobbly thing called an #Oov (underneath me and larger one visible in background). Feet on free #push-through bar and hands holding weights. Always move with your breath (turn on sound!). I have an Oov to suit whatever length torso you have. 💯The Hundred should never get easy🥵 . 👩🏼‍🎓When teaching this, I find that many clients focus too much on what the legs are doing thinking that the lower they go with the legs, the harder they are working, when in fact this is only true if they are holding the weight of the legs at a level they can control using lower stomach muscles! . 📐The height of the upper body is equally as important if not more so, and may vary for each client, as they may have to rise up a little higher or lower to feel the work of the upper abs. If they come up too high, their abs may pop & rise up like a loaf of bread 🍞revealing overuse of the Rectis Abdominis & underuse of the Transverses Abdominis. If they don’t lift high enough, they may not be using their upper abs at all, but in fact be overworking and straining the neck flexors💥 . Depending on the needs of the individual, there are a number of modification to build a client’s strength, or challenge an already strong client💪 . As an example, I’m showing the DOUBLE LEG LOWER AND LIFT advanced challenge. It enables a client to find range of motion with control. Starting with pelvis and spine in neutral for strong clients or in an imprint if neutral cannot be stabilised: •Lower legs slightly on each set of exhales for 50 counts. Ok here we go my #10yearchallenge thank you @poiseandstrengthpilates for the nomination 😝So ten years ago in the first couple of photos I was 30, a single mum to @liamnolan100 and living in a house full of girls (all my besties) so it was FUN, but as you can imagine not ideal at times for a mum with a young boy. I’d just finished a four year stint working on a fab a TV show The Wright Stuff, but I had no money and life was a bit of a struggle at times, I ain’t gonna lie! Roll on ten years, I took the plunge and moved South of the river (In London) I opened my studio @powerpilatesuk and that same month I met my husband ❤️we had Olivia 18 months later, and then Jack just 7 months ago. Life as a mum now is much easier in the sense that I’m a lot more settled, but I’m proud of how I brought up my son Liam pretty much single handily (well my parents helped A LOT too) even through the bad times. So there you have it, a piece of my past ❤️I now count myself as very lucky 🥰hmmm I now nominate @goneadventuringpilates 😘

Think of lengthening through front of hips and keeping shoulders connected to back rather than rolling shoulders forward . > lift leg 1/2 teaser , squeeze ball with inner thigh and quads > tiny pulses . >tiny ab pulses > hold lift arms on your inhale , exhale lower. Im not a swimmer, Im not a diver, and I no longer aspire to move like a ballerina. As my movement practice ages, I find inspiration through my surroundings. In this case, instead of a swan, I often think of one of the magnificent birds of prey swooping through the woods at the trail-side studio. After our snowstorm, its going to be breathtaking out there! The studio will be OPEN tomorrow, 1/19 from 8am - 2:00pm.  On Sunday, 1/20, regular morning classes are canceled. The biggest comment I get after someone’s first session or class is “That was hard!” Just because it’s a low impact workout, improves your balance, + prevents injuries does NOT mean it’s easy. It’s for everyone, no matter where you are in your fitness.

I havent done leg spring in the air in way too long! I had 10 minutes between clients this morning and decided to move and little and see if I still got it 😉 • This series is challenging but fun of you want to change up the leg spring series. 🤸‍♀️ • The idea is to keep abs engaged and not to hold the bars behind your head too tight. Do you see this happen with your clients? . Snapping the knees into extension is a common compensation pattern we see with clients whether they are on a reformer or performing any type of leg press exercise. . What are some of the causes? 🤔 . Leg press is a Closed Kinetic Chain (CKC) Exercise where the knee is performing flexion and extension over a fixed foot. Closed Chain exercises will cause co-contraction around the joint. Muscular co-contraction occurs as the quadriceps contract to counteract the flexion arm at the knee and the hamstrings contract to counteract the flexion moment arm at the hip. However not all CKC exercises produce co-contraction of the quadriceps and hamstring muscles. It appears that squats promote co-contraction whereas a leg press produces a quadriceps muscle dominant contraction. During the horizontal leg press(as in footwork on the reformer) the body is positioned behind the knee joint and the quadriceps must contract to control the knee. Conversely, during the vertical squat, the body is positioned only slightly posterior to the knee joint resulting in more of a co-contraction between the quadriceps and hamstring muscles. . Since horizontal leg press causes a greater quadricep recruitment and there is weakness at the quadriceps especially at terminal knee extension you will see a “snapping” at the knee joint. When clients cannot control that end range of motion they will use momentum and force to achieve it. . Cueing clients to achieve end range in a controlled manner being mindful of how the knee is moving into extension is sometimes enough to see an improved extension moment at the knee. . Take the time next week to watch clients or be more mindful of your own movement to see if this is occurring more often than you realize. . Do you notice any other compensations during footwork that you work towards improving in yourself or your clients?

Im taking a moment to get on my soap box. If you dont want to hear it scroll on... Some of you may remember that a good friend of mine was murdered about six weeks ago. Yesterday morning I did a post on showing love and celebrating life. Yesterday afternoon I learned that another friend is gone. He managed a restaurant and there was a dispute over a carry out order... pancakes to be specific. The customer left and returned with a gun. My friend, was shot and killed. My friends son, also an employee manged to get off a shot, before he was shot as well. My friend and the irate customer are both dead. The son in the hospital. Yall, two people are dead and one hospitalized over pancakes. WE DONT NEED MORE GUNS TO KEEP US SAFE! We need to treat others with love and respect! We need to value life!!! And like it or not, that starts with us. It may not be a popular concept, but life is not all about me... or you. Please, everywhere you go, BE LIGHT AND LOVE.
