Tight Hamstrings? If you have tight hamstrongs that are clinging on for dear life, you can stretch them out to regain your beloved hamstrings. This is a great stretch to do with a friend. Get your friend to lift your leg up with your knee straight till you feel a gentle pull in your hamstrings. Then after holding it there for 20s, to contract contract your hamstring by pushing your heel back down into their hand for 10s while they resist you. Repeat this 2 more times. Why do you think you should exercise and workout? ********************************** For years, my main reasons for exercise were because I wanted other people to think that I look good! I wanted praise and words of affirmation (it’s my love language) and I was/am desperate for it. Every like and every comment is like crack on this stupid app. ********************************** But over the last several months my why has changed. It is much more about myself now. I want the best in my life. I have come to love and accept myself much more than I ever have. I believe that truly accepting yourself means that you realize that you probably deserve more than what you have tolerated in your life. And I don’t mean from other people but from yourself. I deserve the best from myself. I deserve 100% from myself! So I am chasing my next round of goals, not to make anyone else look at me, but so that I can look in the mirror and know that I have given all of myself for myself. That I have made myself stronger, faster, healthier and more fit because my spirit, heart, mind, and body are all better when I do. Bananas, almonds, avocados, leafy veggies, oats, whole grains, Brazil nuts... in theory these are excellent sources of magnesium. However, most of the soil today is depleted of its rich micro nutrient supply. Thus, I am a major advocate for magnesium supplementation with my patients, athlete or non athlete. I conducted an experiment over the past two months upon myself. Im always experimenting my cruel and unusual theories upon myself. Typically i take 600mg Thorne calcium magnesium malate before bed. However for the past two months i took zero magnesium. Absolutely zero. My diet remained the same. I noticed tangible differences in my sleep, muscle contraction and relaxation, mental acuity and focus, gut/gi health, and digestion. Most noticeable was my muscle cramping throughout the day and night. To say that magnesium plays a vital role in the body is an understatement. Ive now resumed supplementing with 600mg magnesium malate and all symptoms have completely disappeared. I encourage you to read up on magnesium and its role in the body at your local library, on a credible internet website, or in a text book. Get academic, be nerdy, its empowering. Despite its importance magnesium is far too often consumed in inadequate dietary amounts!

This special girl is looking for a home!! Mindy has been my long term foster for a few months and finally began trusting human affection. Mindy is about 10 pounds and about a year old. She is a beautiful and very sweet girl who just needs love and patience ❤️ Mindy came from a unique case of abuse from birth and needs a very special home that understands her. She is a nervous girl with human interaction and patience is a must. She absolutely loves other animals and would be a great fit for a home looking to have a companion for their dog. Her ideal day is playing with her fur buddies and is happy with a little spot to call her own for comfort. Due to her anxiety, she will not thrive in a home inexperienced with owning pets nor a home with children. My super sleepy sweet goose, love her little face so much. She’s 8 years old now, still as spunky as the day someone brought her to me when she was just days old, her mother had taken off, so with super limited information to be found on mongoose rearing I did my best. I’d hoped to release her when she was old enough, but she would definitely enter someone’s home and cause chaos! So we are pals, she’s the smartest creature, often cranky but that’s just how they roll. TUCK JUMP PROGRESSION . 🚀 The tuck jump is an exercise that can double as an assessment tool during the rehabilitation of an ACL Reconstruction (ACLR). Film the movement in slow motion and observe any deviations or asymmetries. Is one leg favored? Is there a trunk lean? Is the landing consistent? Is the landing soft or loud? Hows the depth? The list goes on. Here’s a five step progression: . 1️⃣ Single Tuck Jump - Be as explosive as you can with a soft, controlled landing. 2️⃣ Double Tuck Jumps - Perform as quickly as possible. 3️⃣ Multiple Tuck Jumps - You can do as many as you want here or set a timer. 4️⃣ Lateral Tuck Jumps - Same as step 3 but jump back and forth over a line. 5️⃣ Reactive Lateral Tuck Jumps - Jump up and down until your partner tells you to Go! at which time you jump laterally. Repeat as many times as you want. . 📞Clinicians, do you use the tuck jump as part of your assessment? Why or why not? ♡ Baby steps, baby ♡ . I’ve had a tough week both physically and mentally...I’ve felt myself sliding backwards, and at my physio appointment we agreed I needed to take things slower. Afterwards I found myself crying frustrated tears, thinking -everything is already painfully slow! The truth of it settled in eventually: I have been pushing myself, wanting to fast-forward to that mysterious, peaceful place in the future where I’m ‘me’ again. I know this is driven by pain and lack of mobility, but I also think it is a symptom of our modern world, and the huge rush we all seem to be in to get to the next stage when things will be better, when we’ll start living our ‘real lives’. But if we’re solely focused on the tantalising promise of a distant possibility, we can become blindfolded to the precious moments of the present, and struggle to feel fulfilled if we never reach the dreams of the future. For me, wishing away the pain and heart-soreness also means rushing through my little boys early days and months, something I want to cherish especially in light of all the darkness. So while I’ll acknowledge the hard days, and don’t think our hardships should be belittled by being told to ‘appreciate what we have’, in the words Alexandra Stoddard and of one of my favourite labour affirmations, I will try to ‘Slow down. @pt_revolution Side Plank The side plank is a core exercise that challenges the muscles on the sides of your body. Much like the traditional front plank, the side plank requires you to create internal body tension to stay as stiff as possible. It is a great exercise to help you correct any imbalances you may have between the right and left sides of your body, and help build strength in your abdominal and lower back muscles which will help protect your spine. It’s a unique exercise because it targets muscles on the sides of the core, these include but aren’t limited to the internal and external obliques, quadratus lumborum and the glute medius. To perform a side plank, start by lying on your side. Your forearm should be planted on the ground with your elbow directly under your shoulder. Form a straight line from head to tail, with your feet, knees and hips and shoulders stacked on top of each other. From this position, raise your hips up and hold your body in a straight line for the desired time. The push up and bench press are amazing skill transfer exercises, except when they hurt you every time you do them. . Being able to engage a ‘press’ under variability (so in other words, NOT in a lever strength machine) is great until you begin chewing up the shoulder as a byproduct. . Whether pressing out front or overhead or even straight down (scap dips) they all require stable horsepower transfer. What happens is the shoulder bobs and weaves and forces the reflexive stabilizers of the rotator cuff system to become prime movers. Yeah, they’re not designed for that. . The pec major shortens and begins to force tricep recruitment to move load which then in turn loads the labrum (because the long head attaches to the infraglenoid tubercle) and you end up with an injury. . A Month of Myths Day 13 with @dr.joe.dpt: ⠀ The More Sore You Are The Better⠀ ⠀ Delayed onset muscle soreness or DOMS is worn as a badge of honor or is taken as a sign of a great workout and for a lot of people, if they are unable to reach this soreness, feel as though they didn’t train the right way or hard enough. The good news is that this soreness is not necessary for muscle growth and too much soreness can be counter productive! ⠀ •⠀ With novel movements, significant increase in reps, set, load or all of the above, there can be muscle damage that occurs. I know I used to hope for lots of muscle damage and soreness as I could just picture my muscles being stitched back together bigger and beefier than they were before. But what’s called muscle protein synthesis, is unfortunately not used for hypertrophy or increased muscle size during these times of extreme soreness. It is used for muscle damage repair instead of growth. ⠀ •⠀ After this initial bout of soreness comes on, in this study it took 3 weeks, muscle protein synthesis is highly predictive of hypertrophy. The important part to remember is that this can happen better if there is a deceased muscle damage that occurs from the novel stimulus like mentioned above. Training adaptation to similar movements or the repeated bout effect (to be address in a later post) helps to decrease this significant increase in soreness and muscle damage so that muscle protein synthesis can be used to grow the muscles. ⠀ •⠀ If strength increase is the goal of training then we also need to consider that in this study, strength was decreased by 22% for 48 hours after this initial bout of soreness. Something to consider would be that you cannot continue to perform progressive overload if you have this presence of significant soreness and muscle damage. ⠀ • ⠀ It is smarter to gradually progress the stress that you introduce in the gym and intelligently manage fatigue to help maximize strength and hypertrophy and gains!⠀ ⠀ Damas et al. Resistance training induced changes in integrated myofibrillar protein synthesis are related to hypertrophy only after attenuation of muscle damage. 2016⠀ ⠀ Shoutout to @helms3dmj and @gregnuckols

A Month of Myths Day 13 with @dr.joe.dpt: The More Sore You Are The Better. ⠀ Delayed onset muscle soreness or DOMS is worn as a badge of honor or is taken as a sign of a great workout and for a lot of people, if they are unable to reach this soreness, feel as though they didn’t train the right way or hard enough. The good news is that this soreness is not necessary for muscle growth and too much soreness can be counter productive! ⠀ With novel movements, significant increase in reps, set, load or all of the above, there can be muscle damage that occurs. I know I used to hope for lots of muscle damage and soreness as I could just picture my muscles being stitched back together bigger and beefier than they were before. But what’s called muscle protein synthesis, is unfortunately not used for hypertrophy or increased muscle size during these times of extreme soreness. It is used for muscle damage repair instead of growth. ⠀ After this initial bout of soreness comes on, in this study it took 3 weeks, muscle protein synthesis is highly predictive of hypertrophy. The important part to remember is that this can happen better if there is a decreased muscle damage that occurs from the novel stimulus like mentioned above. Training adaptation to similar movements or the repeated bout effect (to be address in a later post) helps to decrease this significant increase in soreness and muscle damage so that muscle protein synthesis can be used to grow the muscles. ⠀ If strength increase is the goal of training then we also need to consider that in this study, strength was decreased by 22% for 48 hours after this initial bout of soreness. Something to consider would be that you cannot continue to perform progressive overload if you have this presence of significant soreness and muscle damage. ⠀ It is smarter to gradually progress the stress in the gym and intelligently manage fatigue to help maximize strength and hypertrophy and gains! ⠀ Damas et al. @charliecout et moi on a essayé le « Lateral Hop Test » pis on était pas très bon 😅😇 Ce test peut être pertinent pour voir si vous êtes apte à retourner au sport après une blessure. Sur une jambe, il faut rebondir par dessus 2 lignes séparées de 40 cm, pendant 30 secondes. Il ne faut pas atterrir sur une ligne! Du côté de la blessure, on vise au moins 90 % des répétitions obtenues du bon côté ou sapprocher de la norme de 55 rebonds pour les hommes et 41 rebonds pour les femmes! (Gustavsson et al, 2006) Nessayez pas ce mouvement sans lapprobation de votre physiothérapeute!
