4 easy miles this morning left me wondering “when will fall arrive in Phoenix?” 😅 I snoozed through my alarm this morning so I got out an hour later than I had planned. The first mile actually felt nice so I’m kind of kicking myself for not getting out the door at 6 like planned. The temps quickly rose with the sun & my pace slowed. Truth time: . This 🏃‍♀️ outfit has been sitting at the foot of my 🛏 since Tuesday night! My schedule called for a trail run Wednesday morning. I was exhausted so I turned my alarm off & went back to sleep - saying I would 🏃‍♀️ Thursday morning. . This morning my alarm went off & I had a raging headache, so I again turned my alarm off & went back to sleep. 💤 I share with you for 2 reasons: . 1. I am not perfect. I miss my workouts sometimes just like everyone else. I get it! . 2. For accountability. I know now that I have called myself out, you will help hold me accountable to 🏃‍♀️ tomorrow morning! . Accountability is huge in helping you accomplish your goals. Whether it’s a running partner who you don’t want to let down by hitting the snooze button, a friend or coach who’s cheering for your success, or a group on social media. It all helps! . “You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with.” -Jim Rohn . As I begin mentally preparing for the first of my fall races next weekend, I focus intently on my goal of running a sub 2 hour half marathon. The summer heat has been challenging on me & I find myself a couple minutes off my 9 min/mile pace goal. But I KNOW I have it in me! . How do I know that? Because I came really close before the temps rose. I ran a PR in NYC in March & then took another 5 minutes off that time a month later in Vegas. I held an 8:45 min/mile pace the first 8 miles that race, but the temps rose quickly with the sun & I missed my goal by 4 minutes & 17 seconds! . A week later I was chatting with my fabulous friend @strongandsaved & she said “come to Minnesota & I will pace you for a sub 2 half.” She found a race for us while we were on the phone & said “I’m in if you’re in!” . 5 weeks later we were in Waconia, Minnesota together ready to set a PR. . Sadly Mother Nature intervened & the race directors made a last minute call to keep everyone safe & cut all races to a 5k. We made the best of it & I accomplished a new 5k PR. So as I ramp up for my 3rd attempt to sub 2 next month in California, I am full of belief because I am reminded of my race with my friend & her words of belief & encouragement ring loudly in my head. . Surround yourself with people who support your crazy big goals. Surround yourself with people who BELIEVE IN YOU & know you can do it. Surround yourself with people who bring out your best & encourage you to rise to greatness. Weekly track workouts are back! . 8x400 with 90 second rest between - coach said they were going easy on us since we haven’t run track since May. . Still kicked my butt! And I am not running my 400’s at the pace I was in May. Oh well - I’ll get there! . I run by myself the majority of the time. I like running by myself. But I also really enjoy the camaraderie of running with a group. And there is absolutely incentive to run a little faster, push a little more when you are surrounded by other runners. Was supposed to be a 5 miler. Had to call it quits because 1. My calf cramped starting at mile 1 2. My foot fell asleep at mile 2 and 3. It was hot. But at least I got a pretty picture.

It’s been raining cats and dogs, with no relief in sight. Wanted to run outside but the treadmill will do. So, Monday’s run completed! Set the goal to run 🏃🏾‍♀️ 6 miles, first 6 miler in over a year. Are your dreams bigger than your excuses? 🧚‍♂️ Yesterday my 🏃‍♀️ did me in. I was tired all day! In fact, I was sound asleep in bed by 8 pm last night! Remember when Saturday night used to mean going out? Yeah - not when you are training for a marathon! My alarm went off at 4 am & I kept hitting snooze. I was so tired I actually thought for a minute about skipping my run. What?!?! As soon as I caught myself with that thought I turned on the light & got my butt out of 🛏! 😴 Running is hard for me right now. I’ve openly been sharing my struggles with you. But any runner will tell you - it’s part of the journey. The fact is - I have BIG GOALS for running & I will not achieve them by giving in to my excuses. I will push through the hard right now & before you & I know it, I’ll be sharing how amazing my run felt. My big dreams motivate me to keep pushing. 💥 Running is hard at times. We all have that time we question if we still want it, if it’s still worth the pain & the sacrifice. My suggestion- always have a big goal you are working towards. Find a win. . Some runs are bad. Some races don’t go the way you had hoped. It’s part of running. It’s a part that sucks, but hey, if every run was great & every race went perfect, how would you ever know how great they were? . It’s easy to get down after a bad run. To think about everything that went wrong. DON’T. It doesn’t serve you. Instead - see if you can find a win. Something that went right. And celebrate it. . Once you are in a positive frame of mind, it’s ok to look back at the run to assess what went wrong. Not to beat yourself up or obsess over it, but to look for lessons so you can improve your next run. . This morning’s 10k run was hard. My legs are feeling better, but it was hot again & I just felt like I had no gas in the tank. My win - I finished the planned 6.2 miles. Could I have pushed myself harder? Maybe, but I chose to keep it lighter today since I have a long run tomorrow. Why did I feel so sluggish? My guess is my nutrition. I haven’t been very specific with what I eat the last couple of weeks & honestly, I don’t think I’m eating enough. For sure I did not eat enough yesterday, but I think the entire week is to blame. I have just over a week before I leave for Paris. Time to monitor my food & make sure I am eating enough. . How do you handle a bad run? How do you pull yourself out of running rut? #finishershirtfriday . So - I am not always the best about sticking to habits. And I almost forgot today is Friday - which means I am committed to wearing one of my race shirts. Honestly - it feels a little odd for me to wear my race shirts long after the race has passed. Am I bragging for completing the Dumbo Challenge 4 years ago? Am I trying to relive the glory days? These are thoughts that enter my mind - things I believe others think when they see me wearing a race shirt. . There’s that crazy mind placing fear & doubt where it doesn’t belong. The truth of the matter: What others think of me wearing my race shirts is none of my business. And I should be proud of all I have accomplished with running. It’s ok this shirt is 4 years old because I am STILL a distance runner today! In fact, I am running an even longer challenge than Dumbo in 2 short weeks in Paris. But yet those feelings of doubt still arise. . I’m learning to be aware of my thoughts. To question if they are helping me or hurting me. If they are hurting me, how can I turn them around. I am a constant work in progress. I hope to be until the day I take my last breath. For today - I will work on why I am afraid to show pride in my accomplishments as a runner. . Nothing grows inside your comfort zone. 🧚‍♀️ I had to remind myself this several times during my 5k run this morning. My legs are slowly feeling better - but my calves still really hurt some times. The thing is - I know they are just tight; this is not an injury. I can allow my mind to tell me it’s too hard & I can give in, or I can show my mind I am stronger & push through the pain. The choice is mine. But two very different outcomes appear based upon my choice. 🕺 This morning I told fear & doubt to get lost & I pushed past the pain. I focused on my breathe, focused on my goals & did my best to ignore the tightness in my calves. And you know what?!?! By the time I got 2 miles into my run, my muscles finally got on board with me & released. The last mile felt pretty darn good! 🏃‍♀️ Being a marathoner is not easy. That’s why less than 1% of the population has ever run a marathon. I’m proud to be amongst the elite crew who can say they have & to be in full training mode for my 2nd. But I know that means I will endure many ups & downs along the way. The key to success is not allowing my mind to tell me I can’t. Today is my rest day - which means an extra hour for me to spend however I choose. . Since today is National Read a Book Day (yup - it’s true!) I thought I would spend a little more time reading & growing my mind today. And I have to say - I am learning so much from this book! . I’ve shared a few times the struggles I have felt this summer with the heat. Part of that is thanks to my hormones & the fact that my body is preparing to enter menopause- though I hope that is still at least 5 years away. So I wanted to learn more because I absolutely do not accept that I have to slow down as I age. This book was recommended to me by another 40 something female runner & man am I grateful! . Women - no matter how old you are or where you are in your athletic endeavors- if you want to feel great as an athlete & optimize your performance, READ THIS BOOK! . She covers everything from our hormones, to nutrition, to body types, to how to race in extreme conditions (like maybe running in the desert in the summer). Stuff I never even realized impacts my performance she covered. This is a book I will keep@close by always & use as a reference. It really is that good! . What defines us is how well we rise after we fall. 💥 I had an AMAZING spring with running. I beat a 6 year old PR for my half by 5 minutes in March & then beat that PR by another 6 minutes just 6 weeks later. Running felt easy. It felt good & every run left me feeling happy & strong. 💪 Then summer hit & the temps quickly rose. Running didn’t feel easy anymore - it felt really hard! And I’ve been stuck in this space for months! This week it finally feels like fall is coming (which means it’s in the 70’s) so I SHOULD be enjoying my runs again. But the last 2 weeks my calves have been giving me major grief & it hurts when I run. It’s just a tight muscle so I am able to keep training - but why won’t it let go already & let me get back to happy running? 🤨 I’ve been a distance runner for over a decade. The one thing I know without a doubt - running is a roller coaster. You have to ride out the lows to enjoy those highs. And while the highs never seem to last as long as I want them to, the lows don’t last forever either. 🏃‍♀️ Big dreams take time. #GOALS . When someone passes you on a run or during a race, how do you react? Does it upset you & mess with your mood? Does it motivate you to pick up your pace & see if you can match their faster pace? Does it provide a new pace goal? . This morning, on the steepest, most technical part of my trail run, this dude FLEW past me. We were going downhill & I was running a decent pace & he flew past me like I was standing still. Crazy! This trail is no joke - it’s a difficult trail & when I run my focus is always on my feet & making sure I don’t trip or land wrong & roll an ankle. And this dude made it look easy! No joke! This full body routine with 10lb and 20 lb dumbbells broke me off! Some combo moves I usually do, just added some planks: side, full and plank push-up! Great way to start this short week. Happy Monday 💪🏾💁🏾‍♀️🏋🏾‍♀️

One of Tahoes most beautiful hikes. Cadence picked Echo Lake today and she and I took a quick dip in the freezing cold water. Next time were taking paddle boards across to Upper Lake and one day well venture to Lake Aloha. That will be the adventure of all adventures!!

Do you allow fear to hold you back? Or do you lean in & say “Watch me!” . This morning, despite fear & that voice inside my head telling me I couldn’t, I joined a group of guys to trail run 11.5 miles. I shared earlier in the week how I had hesitated to join the group because I know I am slower than the guys who were running. But I also really wanted to give it a shot! . This morning I left my house before the sun came up to join the group. A handful of women showed up, but they all chose a shorter trail. I stuck with the guys & did my very best to hang with them. 5 great guys who were super encouraging the entire time & waited for me to catch up at the turns. 5 guys who all told me I was doing great when I apologized for holding them up & encouraged me to keep going. And even though I was slower than them, I wasn’t as slow as I thought & I found that running with the group felt fabulous! And I know I pushed harder on this run than I would have had I been on my own. . Don’t be afraid to join a group of runners - even if you feel you are too slow. Runners are amazing people & love to encourage other runners. Pick a day where they aren’t concerned with their pace or a loop trail where you can see them yet not hold them back. What happens when EVERYTHING goes wrong? How do you handle it? 🌧 That was the story for me this morning. It started out like a great morning. My alarm was set for 4:30 am but I woke up on my own at 4:20. Made my Disney FP selections for my upcoming trip while I enjoyed my breakfast & headed out the door feeling happy & ready. ☀️ First my Nike+ Running app didn’t want to work on my Apple Watch - this has been an issue for the last 6 months off & on. No problem - while it did it’s thing, I spent a few extra minutes stretching. 🤸‍♀️ Once I got my app to start a run I headed out - feeling good. Got to the stop light (almost a half mile in) & my app didn’t pause while I waited for the light to turn so I looked at it. It wasn’t tracking ANYTHING! This is a problem I’ve had with Nike for about 6 weeks. Took me a few minutes to finally get it to REALLY work so it would track my run. Annoying but I know my route so it wasn’t the end of the day. ✏️ Got moving in my 🏃‍♀️ & I was struggling. My legs hurt & felt heavy. Running felt super hard & well - my will power to push through was quickly escaping me. I had electrolytes with me so I decided to take a swig & see if that would give me a kick. 👢 Well - I ordered a new handheld for my long runs & today was my first run with it. Umm - it’s defective & I could NOT drink out of the squeeze top. I had to unscrew the kid every time I wanted a drink. This is definitely being returned as this is not going to fly long term! 🦅 I was really beginning to wonder what the running gods had against me running this morning!! I mean why?!?! And now what?!?! 🤷‍♀️ I did what I always do. I shook it off & did my best. I reminded myself i had a great run Thursday morning & it will all be ok. I ran as much as I could & walked when I had to. I still completed my 5 miles so I still finished with a sense of accomplishment. #finishershirtfriday In honor of the 10 year anniversary of running my first half marathon, I’m wearing my shirt from the Disneyland Half Marathon 4 years ago. I didn’t save my shirt from 10 years ago. Back then #rundisney race shirts weren’t really that great. I kind of think it was probably even cotton. Needless to say, it’s long been discarded in one of my many closet purges. Maybe I should have kept it for sentimental value? Nah - I’m not much for that kind of stuff! . This t-shirt is like a weird lime green - it’s not really a good color for me. Honestly, I’m not sure if it’s a good color for anyone. And while I have been wearing it all day, the diva in me is not comfortable immortalizing a pic of me wearing it here on IG ;) Hey - I own my flaws! . I do miss the races @disneyland & I sure hope they return soon! I would love to be running there this weekend to celebrate 10 years of running. Why do I LOVE to run? 💗 This weekend marks the 10 year anniversary of my first half marathon. A decade of running half marathons! It’s so crazy for me to believe that! To this day, I still ABSOLUTELY LOVE TO RUN! 💕 Over the years, I’ve had people ask me why I run & I always say “because I love it!” To which they say “why?” My Dad says I am addicted to the endorphins. Clearly he has no clue about running. If you are a runner, you know that elicit “runner’s high” is never guaranteed & can often elude you for many, many years. Some runners may never experience that runner’s high. Nope - that really has nothing to do with why I love to run. ❤️ This morning was an easy 4 miler. I didn’t start until about 9 am because I was distracted by other stuff so it was a bit warm. But I felt strong & my mind was flooded with ideas. I mean I could not stop the ideas from coming. About my race calendar for 2019; my goals for running; my goals for my business; ideas for creating & fostering a running community that welcomes ALL. I mean so many ideas. AND THAT IS MY #1 REASON WHY I LOVE TO RUN! 🏃‍♀️ I remember reading an article in Forbes (or something comparable) many years ago when I had just begun running. It was an interview with some CEO I have long since forgotten, but he was a runner. He explained it was not uncommon for him to take a mid-day break, change in to running clothes & head to Central Park for a run. He explained it was when he did his best thinking. And I was like “yeah, me too dude!” At that time, I was managing 401(k) plans & working way too many hours, but I always made time for a run. And my favorite C-suite clients were usually endurance athletes too & agreed, best thinking came on a run, or on their bike or in the pool. There’s just something magical that happens when we push our bodies. ✨ For all you runners - let me hear from you. Today is my rest day. Which means I can sleep in & spend a bit more time snuggling with my puppies. 🐶 Rest days are an important part of your training. It gives your muscles a chance to recover. It gives your mind a chance to unwind. And it helps you come back even stronger the next day. 💪 For a long time, I never took a full rest day. I run 4-5 days a week & I lift weights 4 days a week. I thought it was fine that I gave my body 3 days off from the weights & 2 days off from running. But I couldn’t drop weight, even though I was doing everything right & I began to feel tired on my runs - like my tank was empty. My run coach told me to take a true rest day each week - meaning no exercise. What?!?! I have BIG goals - I can’t take a day off! 💥 But the truth is, my body was begging for a day off. And now - a couple months into this rest day once a week schedule, I actually look forward to my rest days - if for no other reason than I can sleep in! 🛌 I always run all weekend. Since #runDisney introduced the race challenges years ago, I find I always have a multi day race on my calendar. And I REALLY enjoy that! I’ve been playing around with which day makes the most sense for my rest day & I’m thinking Wednesday’s. It’s a great way to break up my week & I feel fresh going into my long weekend of running many miles! 🏃‍♀️ When is your preferred rest day?
