An email from a colleague reminded me of this neat little orthorectification algorithm I made way back in the day. I.e.: using GPS points to distort an image to make it appear as if taken from above. This is a timelapse frame from a fjord in SW Greenland. Good times! All GPS points (red stars) were simply retrieved using google maps and distinct landmarks (in pictures with no snow). From these a series of extra GPS points were derived from interpolation (green stars) and the entire image was then distorted according to the resulting mesh of longitude/latitude. #orthorectified #ortho #imageprocessing #timelapse #greenland #kobbefjord #nuuk #colourfulnuuk #matlab #science #arctic #seaice

SOCCOM research has found that freshwater plays the most powerful role in changing water density in the Southern Ocean. The change in density drives circulation and the melting of wind-blown sea ice contributes 10 times more freshwater than melting of land-based glaciers. ⠀ ⠀ Overturning circulation brings deep water and nutrients up to the surface, carries surface water down, and distributes heat and helps store carbon dioxide as it flows through the world’s oceans, making it an important force in the global climate system. Arctic sea ice at 80°N. Sea ice is really hard to predict. We saw that the conditions of sea ice drastically changed from last summer and we couldnt really rely on satellite images to help us navigate through the sea ice as they dont have that high resolution. The extremely low visibility conditions also didnt help much. We could go as far as we didnt encounter fast ice (sea ice attached to land, impossible to move). For going further in one needs the raw power of ice breakers. Nevertheless, incredible to see how far we managed to go in without having an ice breaker ship, kudos to the captain for making it possible to collect some important data! . . . . . #exploretheworld #expedition #scientistsofinstagram #scientistlife #climatechange #summer #arcticocean #arctic #ig_amazingnature #seaice #nature #natgeo #research #sciencecommunity #ig_today #ig_week #explorers

Safe trip #home! #arcticocean2018 #oden #expedition last and final posting (2018-09-21, Michael Tjernström): The Arctic Ocean 2018 expedition seems to continue to be plagued by bad #weather. Or maybe its the weather #forecasts that are getting better. We left the #seaice camp a day early due to a forecasted #storm coming in, and this time a forecast of severely stormy #weather in the #opensea between #Svalbard and #Tromsø, where we were planning to go, had the plans changed again. So the #science was cut short by one full day and we ended up in #Longyearbyen this afternoon. #Longyear looks like it did some 50 days ago - only with a thin cover of #snow here and there, and it is darker in the evening. Most of us fly out tonight, and will be at home tomorrow - with a story to tell! (Photo: Michael Tjernström)

The long wait for the sea ice to return is almost over. As of the latest Arctic ice chart, the sea is almost non existent apart from a small finger off the south coast of Nordaustlandet - which is where we saw this beautiful lady! I remember this moment well...it was 1am and during summer the sun just kisses the horizon, so there is light all the time. Four of us were walking back across the sea ice after watching & photographing Adelie Penguins on an Island rookery, half way back we met a small group of penguins going the other way, this one stopped for a few seconds to check us out. It always amazed me that such a small, seemingly fragile creature could survive in the harshest of conditions. I have so much admiration for them. #antarctica #adelie #adeliepenguin #davisstation #seaice #rookery

Dogs at Station Nord have a very important role. Being disconnected from the world and having very limited human interactions, dogs provide comfort and they are the best to cuddle with During the winter science expeditions sometimes I found myself lying in the snow and hugging one of these fluffy big teddy bears of the station. With Thomas Krumpen sea ice physicists at Station Nord, August 2018, front of my favourite wall, with the logo of the base and with my favorite long shadows, which you can enjoy for long hours at this time and part of the world. It was 2016 as I join Thomas to Station Nord, Greenland for the first time. His scientific research truly impressed me and I felt an urge and motivation to start to document it and the work of sea ice physics team of Alfred Wegener Institute. It is easy to get sea ice extent data from satellite, but very difficult to get ice thickness, especially during summer months, when the sea ice melts. Thomas fills this gap and delivers important sea ice thickness data, leading the airplane based Arctic Ocean summer sea ice thickness campaign since 2010. The entire program has started in 2002, that time with sleds and helicopters, today with Polar 5&6 research aircraft. @nytimes published my documentary with a wonderful writing of @henryfountain . Please find the story in bio. Over the next weeks I would like to take you to Station Nord and share my favorite stories of the place. @ilcp_photographers #alfredwegenerinstitute #awi #science #seaice #scientists #arctic #arcticocean #greenland #stationnord

Right where she wants to be. Right where she needs to be. Polar bears depend on sea ice to hunt their main prey, seals. But as global temperatures rise, sea ice is declining. If we as humans don’t make changes now we could lose two-thirds of polar bears by the 2050’s & they will face total extinction by the end of the century. Bottom line, we need to make changes in the right direction. Without change not only do the arctic & polar bears face a bleak future.. the human race won’t be far behind. Photographed on assignment with @oneoceanexp

We didn’t see many mammals on this particular trip (a few whales and seals), but here are a few photos I’ve taken from previous trips to get a sense of what lurks in these waters of the Bering and Chukchi Seas (many of which are certainly more visible and/or present in the vicinity of sea ice, which we didn’t see much of)... . How many polar bears do you see in this shot of the Chukchi Sea? . #clarkpolarscience #clarkuniversity #clarkgeography #arcticscience #polarscience #oceanscience #polarbear #beringsea #chukchisea #seaice #nikon

A female polar bear gracefully crosses a large crack in a floating slab of ice on the frozen ocean. • The difference in reflectivity between areas of bright white of the ice and the deep black sections of open ocean are vitally important to the climate system. • Ice can reflect light and heat from back out into space, moderating the climate of the entire planet, but the more area that is dark ocean, the more heat is absorbed and the faster the warming occurs. • The struggle of polar bears and sea ice may feel like a distant, separate and invisible from our daily lives, but the earth is an intertwined system. The impacts of what happens in the Arctic matter around the globe just as our footprints around the globe will dictate the future of the Arctic.

Polar bears depend on sea ice to survive. They eat seal blubber, almost exclusively. They cant reach their prey unless they can travel by ice. You can help preserve sea ice by keeping your home cooler in the winter and warmer in the summer. 2° either way makes a big difference. #WelcomeBackAnoki #zoo #zoophotography #aza #azaphotography #SAFE #savingspecies #seaice #polarbearsinternational #polarbear

Two leopard seals rest on a large chunk of sea ice. ⠀ ⠀ Antarctic sea ice is constantly on the move as powerful winds blow it away from the coast and out toward the open ocean. SOCCOM scientists used a computer model to synthesize millions of ocean and ice observations collected over six years near Antarctica and estimated the influence of sea ice, glacier ice, precipitation and heating on ocean overturning circulation. Overturning circulation brings deep water and nutrients up to the surface, carries surface water down, and distributes heat and helps store carbon dioxide as it flows through the world’s oceans, making it an important force in the global climate system. The scientists found that freshwater played the most powerful role in changing water density, which drives circulation, and that melting of wind-blown sea ice contributed 10 times more freshwater than melting of land-based glaciers did. ICESat-2 will provide scientists with height measurements that create a global portrait of Earth’s 3rd dimension, gathering data that can precisely track changes of terrain including glaciers, sea ice, forests and more. While many of ICESat-2’s discoveries are yet to be imagined, the satellite mission has four science objectives: . -  Measure melting ice sheets and investigate how this effects sea level rise, . -  Measure and investigate changes in the mass of ice sheets and glaciers, . -  Estimate and study sea ice thickness, . -  Measure the height of vegetation in forests and other ecosystems worldwide. . 📸 Thank you @natgeo for sharing! ・・・ Photo by @nickcobbing | When the captain said “we’re going to the ice bridge” I didn’t understand what he meant. He explained that the ‘bridge’ was where the sea ice formed a plug between two land masses, preventing the flow of ice south. So we sat there for a while with Canada just to our left and Greenland to our right and our bow pointing towards the North Pole, marvelling at the scale and wonder of it all. Later the captain said we should retreat because this ‘bridge’ of ice would likely break up, sending pieces of ice down the channel behind us (The Nares Strait). Sea ice breaking up seasonally is normal, but what’s changed with the decades is that sea ice is thinning and receding because of a warming ocean and atmosphere. #seaice #ship #scale #climatechange #arctic #arcticocean #adventure #greenland #adventuretime #nature #naturephotography #globalwarming #ecofriendly #ocean #consciousness #enviroment #pollution #callyourrepresentatives #meltingice #wednesdaywisdom #savetheearth
