Consuming food preworkout not only has been shown to increase the thermic effect of exercise, but also greater energy expenditure post exercise (Hackett 2017). This study also found that those who ate before exercise preserved more muscle protein versus those who didnโ€™t. Ingesting Carbs preworkout has been shown to increase workout performance by increasing the following: glycogen, insulin, and blood glucose. The combination of carbs + protein has been to shown to maximally stimulate protein synthesis (Kerksick 2008). Per Kerksick, the recommend intakes (depending on goals) are the following: ~1-2g Carb/kg + 0.15-0.25g Protein/kg within that 1-3hr. Eating before = possible increased fat loss + muscle preservation. โ€ฆ Post workout nutrition is extremely important as well. The forsaken โ€œanabolic windowโ€ saying you have to eat 30 mins post workout isnโ€™t entirely true. A study done showed that this โ€œwindowโ€ only occurs when NO food is consumed PRIOR to working out (Ivy & Ferguson 2013). Training fastedโ€ฆEat ASAP after working out. A preworkout meal (such as the foods listed), will give you an adequate amount of amino acids to use (Kerksick 2017). So..how much protein? Those following an exercise resistance program and using 40g of whey post workout had a greater MPS response (this is good) vs those who consumed 20g post workout. Carbohydrates post workout? it is merely an option and not necessary. It is recommended to replenish glycogen stores post workout, ONLY if that individual is going to engage in other high intensity exercises that day (Sherman 1993). Otherwise a daily carbohydrate intake greater than 8g/kg is effective at maintaining glycogen stores during high endurance output (Sherman 1993). All personal preference though. โ€ฆ I recommend experimenting with what foods work best for YOU in both the pre and post nutrition. ... [Heart Healthy] โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ € Yields: 4 servings Total Time: 0 hours 30 mins โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ € Ingredients - 1 navel orange - 1/4 c. fresh lime juice - 2 tsp. sugar - Kosher salt - Pepper - 1/2 c. sour cream - 2 carrots, coarsely grated - 1 small red onion, finely chopped - 1/2 small red cabbage (about 1 lb), cored and shredded - 1 1/2 lb. tilapia fillets - 4 c. tortilla chips, crushed - 1/2 c. fresh cilantro, chopped - Lime wedges and hot sauce, for serving โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ € Directions: 1. Heat oven to 425ยฐF. Finely grate 1 tsp zest from orange into a large bowl, then squeeze in juice (about 1/3 cup). The jury spoke, okay so we are going to lose 15 lbs. Here are my steps: 1. Identify the goal - lose 15lbs 2. Set a deadline, be reasonable give yourself enough time. 3. Find out your current macro nutrient intake and then make the alterations. I am going to increase my protein to 235g, carbs down to 30g, and fats to 60g per day. 4. Take a current photo, and take one every week at the same time for analytics of progress. 5. Create the cardio and workout regiment. Stick to this for at least 2 weeks. Any questions?
