Deficit Cleans For More Speed I started adding back in two conjugate-method Olympic lifts per week. As of right now I don’t have specific, set-in-stone days that I’m throwing these in. Sometimes it’s Monday and Thursday, and at times it’s Wednesday and Saturday. Much of this is based off of how I’m feeling. Here’s what I’ll do. I’ll add in one Clean-conjugate and one Snatch-conjugate movement per week, up to a Max. This week featured a Power Clean from a deficit. What does this do? It helps generate SPEED. This is another approach you can take with your speed work on your squat day, especially if you don’t have the ability to deadlift through bands. Going deeper, to properly set up to execute a deficit clean, grab 1 plate or two mats (one for each foot). This helps to develop a quicker speed off the floor, it forces you to get aggressive, and it helps to build strength because the pull is longer. The deficit variation additionally reinforces a precise landing position. The last thing you want is to land off the plates or mats in an awkward catch position, potentially risking an injury. By employing this alternative from a deficit, you will create another gear of explosiveness and urgency to get the bar moving FAST. When I competed in the Muscle Trifecta a few years ago (Olympic lifting, Bodybuilding and Powerlifting in the same weekend), I added in two conjugate-based Olympic lifts per week, up to a Max. The Non-Negotiable FACT Here’s a non-negotiable fact that I have deeply entrenched into my life. To be honest, you should make it yours too. Allocating the required time at a non-negotiable level to Lunging & Learning will propel your life to new peaks. Find the true embodiment of Lunge & Learn. Find something that is going to sharpen your sword. Find something that will enhance your craft and make you feel better overall. Studying is a mind and body thing that lines things up eerily well. Guess what? You can do it ANYWHERE! If you have a track, knock out 400-800 meters every day. Test your limits and make your goal to eventually be at 800 meters daily. That’s where you ultimately want to be. There’s no excuse for not getting them in, even if the weather isn’t great. Step out and back inside while learning something constructive. I do this sometimes when I travel. Once you test yourself out at a track, you’ll have a better idea of how long you’ll have to lunge and at what pace inside. When I’m not at a track I make it a mandatory 30 minutes of lunging. The fact is that it is extremely uncomfortable to lunge, no matter how good you are at them. Lunging presents a mental barrier for me to overcome, while lifting has never been an issue. Lunges are ALWAYS TOUGH. My perspective… If I can commit to Lunge and Learn for an entire year, the daily compounded effect of my metabolism, strength, muscle mass, calories burned, and the development of my mind, will be OFF THE CHARTS. Think about that for a second. Not only will you reap the rewards of the compound effect in all aspects of life, it’ll help bring down your anxiousness and use that nervous energy in an inspiring way. It’ll set the tone for the day to help create positive momentum. It’s a GAMER-CHANGER. If I think back and reflect on the most “locked-in” parts of my career, they were all after I created Anabolic Fasting and implemented my practice of lunging. This was within the past FIVE YEARS. It’s been in lift-off ever since. I feel it right now. The groove, opportunity and clarity that I’m experiencing through this everyday non-negotiable is keeping me in the zone.
Day 125 of 800 meters of walking lunges(62.5 miles). Here is a non-negotiable fact for me. Getting outta bed and doing this in 26 degree weather contributes to my success pushing me one day closer. Staying in bed and being a little bitch would have pushed me one day further away. Exercise more self discipline in your life and get what you want in the forms of confidence & opportunity.
